  • I was thinking more of wicks and renames. I can't exactly criticize the democratic approach, because at its core, the wiki, while run by an admin, is supposed to be run by the editors and users.
  • Well, yeah. That's what an administrator's supposed to do. He's supposed to avoid the "nerds" from making the wiki a circle jerk-ish catalogue where they only talk about three or four series via safety measures and rules.

However, this doesn't mean that the admin. has to force every single decision. Or at least, a good admin has to distinguish between actions that require him interloping and actions that require just the userbase's input.

@Beholdy: "One group of, let's face it, Internet nerds apparently has nothing
better to do than to mock another group of Internet nerds, probably just
to show that they are somehow superior."

Probably? They're social misfits, many with Aspergers, who pay $10 or $20 to post on an internet forum. I don't think the psychology behind their behavior could be otherwise.

    How do you know that?

Reading, they seem on the whole much better educated than the average roper, and occasionaly indulge in reasonable, informative, intellectual discourse.

Much better than the half formed opinions and "I'M RIGHT YOU'RE WRONG CHEWBACCA DEFENSE WALL OFF TEXT BUZZWORD YADA YADA" arguments on TVT.

Also, they seem much more well adjusted than the average troper as well.

Hell, $10 - $20 ain't a huge amount of money. I'd pay that much to have all the horrid people on TVT gone.

No, how do you know they are all misfits with AS?

Have you studied a reasonable sample size? What was your methodology?

  • I do have Aspergers Syndrome, and was diagnosed at the Mayo clinic, so I'm pretty sure it's accurate.

Btw, if anyone cares, the troper known as Kay4Today is dead
  • A lot of tropers actually do have AS.

Much more common than self-diagnosed AS, at least on TVTropes, is self diagnosed depression or some other mood disorder.

Worse, other people-diagnosed depression or other mood disorder. A lot of people really went out of their way to try to convince me I'm bipolar.

Btw, if anyone cares, the troper known as Kay4Today is dead

Oh my god, that's horrible. :(

    What happened?

    I don't, so I never said that.

I don't know about you but where I come from, that looks like you said they are misfits.

    Kay's dead? I am shocked. :(

West speaks to her gf and used to speak to Kay but Squid, I had the same feeling as well :(

I really want to trust West though
  • Well, her girlfriend's supposedly telling the westerner. But according to Kay herself, Westerner had some...trolling tendencies. I don't know how to think of this, myself. For one, I can't help but think of the whole Leanan thing a while back, and for another, I do not dare to speak up about it simply because of the possibility that I might be wrong (Which is admittedly huge)

So all I can do is post my condolensces and hope for the best.
  • Pretty much what Juan said.

...It's kinda sad how hard it can be to trust people online.

@Naney, I think its because of the Leanan thing
  • Really, people?

If this is fake, what are they going to do? Point at you, laugh, and go "LOL, I made you look like a decent human being! I TROLL U"?

    Superglobe:

There are some sick people out there
  • So?

My point is, you have absolutely nothing to lose by showing some basic human respect for the dead.

What are you afraid of, here?

  • Smoke me a kipper, I'll be back for breakfast
Believe it or not, people don't like being lied to
  • No shit.

My point is not that, if you find out later that you were lied to, you can be pissed then. But there's no point in being overly paranoid because you might possibly conceivable have been lied to but you're not quite sure.

Once again, that makes them look terrible. Not you.

  • I'm a loser. Also, Creeper. And a woman.
    T-that's horrible. :(
  • I asked Westerner if he could find out where condolences to her parents and family could be sent.

That was one thing that was not forthcoming when Leanan's "death" occurred, leaving a lot of people wondering.
  • So I can't be allowed to be a little distrusting? OK.

I gave my condolensces, you know. I just said this here because I needed to say it.
  • I confess my first thought was "Leanan, again?"  Doesn't mean it didn't happen.  Doesn't mean that it did.  Still, best to assume good of people unless they prove otherwise or it actually matters.
  • Smoke me a kipper, I'll be back for breakfast
    ....I don't feel sad about this :(
  • I don't think it's best to assume good or bad of people. I just play with the evidence and knowlegde I have of this people and what they've done and said. I have no reason to outright believe this, but no reason to doubt it either. So all I can do is give my condolensces, because if Kay was real and she died, then it's not only the polite thing to do, it's also what I want to do, for I knew her, talked to her and considered her a dear friend, but if I've been lied to and been made a fool of...well, I'll live.
  • I don't know what to say.

I did not really knew Kay, but... my condolences. It is still sad
  • I had that same reaction to tendollarlameo's father's passing. I guess that changed my outlook on these matters.

Hopefully, you guys are right and this is just a tasteless but inconsequential prank.
  • You are the end result of a “would you push the button” prompt where the prompt was “you have unlimited godlike powers but you appear to all and sundry to be an impetuous child” – Zero, 2022
I kinda feel bad because I wouldn't really feel sad either way.

I never really feel much when people I don't really know die. I know it's an autism spectrum thing (lack of empathy) but I worry it means I'm some kind of heartless monster.
  • I'd feel sad if I actually knew the person; Kay was someone I interacted with only a little bit and didn't feel close to.  I can understand the feeling by analogy, though.
  • I'd rather show empathy and be tricked into being trolled, than reinforce against being trolled when others want to share empathy.

Reminds me of that this fucked-up guy on a yugioh IRC chat I was on when his parents let the card group I was part of that their son passed away, and he just said "good fucking riddance" because he didn't like the kid because of card game related opinions, which got him omni-terminated from the site, server and IRC chat.
  • THIS MACHINE KILLS FASCISTS
Omni-terminated. Heh. One of those times when I'm sure the mods would have liked the ability to punch people in the face over standard TCP/IP. :P

I didn't know Kay all that well myself, but the circumstances of her death were really tragic and so I feel sad for her anyhow. My stepdad had a relative that was killed by a hit-and-run driver, and so I have some idea of what it's like for the family.
  • Remember back in the 50s when they'd record like Elvis singing YOU AIN'T NOTHIN BUT A HOUND DOG and then they'd turn the record over and reverse it and it was all NYERP NYERP NYERP NYERP NYERP and people were all like, "That is actually the voice of Satan coming from that song."
I never knew Kay very well, and I don't think I ever talked to her on TV Tropes. But I agree that her death was a tragedy, and my condolences to her family.

    Kay
is still alive. For the record, I do not think this makes Westy's
apologies to any of you insincere. I'm saying this here because Bobby G
and Westy have temporarily locked the thread in question. The news of
her death was a prank. Not by Westy (he thought it was true and was
devastated), but by a person on Kay's side. I won't say any more on the
matter, but know that the girl in question is still alive.

    Transient.
    That's a relief.

Kay is one of those posters who, while I haven't seen much of, I've seen good things from her consistently enough that I know I'd have liked to have her around.

    Relief over, time to RAGE.
