Mac OS was the original OS for the Mac, and dates back to the first Mac in 1984. It's very much its own beast. OS X is essentially the second coming of NEXTSTEP, and is a Unix variant running a revised, Mac OS-like GUI.

Yeah, anything with "System" or "Mac OS" with no X in it is the old system. 9.2.2 is the last version.
