He (David Byrne)’s a genuine eccentric,” says Eno. “He’s always been exactly like that, and I’ve seen him remain like that in quite extreme situations. For instance, we were mugged together once in New York. It was quite frightening; we were mugged by 14 people. My enduring memory is of David being dragged off into the bushes, saying ‘Uh-oh!’ That’s absolutely true; it was like a cartoon scene.
So, just going by the first disc so far, Thighpaulsanda's The Golden Communion might be one of the best albums of 2015. It is easily one of the most underrated.
there was a bit with vocoded slam gurgles and blast beats on Sticky drama, and on Ezra and on a few other songs there was these kinda post grunge guitar bridge bit but mostly there was like weird sound design porn and ultra-90s massive synth arps and mangled to death pop vocal snippets, and while the strucutres of the tracks do sometimes lean into a sort of lull then burst of action thing you get from like grunge, but it's coming from a more freeform place than that
music journos played up the "rock inspired" thing because of the Kaoss Edge "hypergrunge" concept and the fact that he opened for NIN recently
Apparently they do use some exotic tunings on their work, since they use a lot of old analogue equipment that one has to tune to play in the first place. I've definitely heard neutral thirds in some of their work, which is not something you hear often in mainstream-ish music outside of really old blues and Middle Eastern-influenced stuff.
I recall being really into their first album because of how rough and ragged that take on their sound was, but it's been a long time.
You can build them if you have $75 worth of supplies and equipment and sufficient knowhow. The schematics for the SynthiAKS and a bunch of others are right their online. The only issue is the power supply, which you'd have to buy because unless you know an electrical engineer you don't want to fuck with AC, but if you know a nerd with a soldering iron, you can make a synthesiser.
It only killed it dead because I didn't have the money for it at the time. Everything else is not only easy to put together if you know a little about electronics—the friend in question is basically MacGuyver; dude used to build his own guitars Glenn Branca style out of planks and wire—but fairly inexpensive: A vintage synth that would have set us back thousands would have set us back maybe $50-75 in basic supplies. I'm not sure how much the power supply would've cost, though.
What kind of power supply does it call for? You can get computer-grade, high-amperage power supplies pretty easily, but they may be too noisy for audio work.
these are really good too, this one I'm listening to has the DJ (Marly Marl) cutting the fuck out of a Public Enemy record (namely "Bring The Noise" though it's mixed with a different instrumental).

"Crying in Public," the big press favorite (was an embed but per the rules now is not)
I especially enjoyed "Show U Off" (not on YouTube yet), a tune that gives Caroline's vocals a sharp, HAIM-like feel (with a little Mariah near the end) and complements them with a nice stuttery early 2000's beat.
Another one I like a lot but might not work for everyone is "Ch-Ching," a hip-pop number that has no right to be as good as it is. Gotta be those damned horns.

I’m glad he at least went out on a high.

I quite like what I've heard.

If you even like pop music a little bit PLEASE listen to Moth by Chairlift (and even if you don't it's still worth listening to)
I didn't even consider myself a big fan (I liked 'Bruises' because Apple used it in an iPod commercial once) but they have converted me
