While it's pretty cool that you got that reference, our subway lines don't actually go that far.
Besides, the last time I let Chrysanthemum Rose go to Washington, she spent the entire time smoking weed because "it's legal there". It's legal in Centralia, too, but for some reason she never does it here...?

Funny thing: Queen City is a nickname for Seattle, which is pretty close to Redmond. Less funny thing: Our subways still don't go that far, if only because we just got around to building them and the rest of the state wants to screw us over.
Propaganda from GM and Firestone, the Interstate Highway System making truck and bus lines competitive with long-distance rail (and airline deregulation making things hard for Amtrak).
I suspect racism and classism enter into it as well. While the US is a big place, that's no excuse; the Interstate is far bigger than any of the high-speed rail projects anyone's proposed, but it catered directly to suburban white families with the disposable income to go on long car trips while rail in general serves mainly blacks and Hispanics (this is why you don't see a lot of support for it in the South).
The NYC Subway, Washington Metro, Boston T and Chicago L are all considered absolutely vital, but subway in places like Atlanta get attacked with racial slurs all the damn time.
I would also bet there's some provincialism involved; I would not be surprised if some white-haired old cracker in Mississippi or Alabama is like "We don't want them carpetbaggers and scalawags coming down here on the rails to take over our Great Southern Nation again!" Especially if the line connects to DC and New York!
Of course, if that were the case, then why haven't they cried bloody murder over the Crescent, which has been around for decades? Probably because it's long, slow and always late because of CSX or NS holding it up.

Is Queen City the county seat of Queen City County?
And what are the full and proper names of each?
