Given that it uses the older "The Sports Authority" name, it might pre-date that logo...

So this morning my internet went out. I was pissed off, since we just had it fixed a week ago, so I decided to just watch cartoons until it was time for bed.
But I didn't. Instead I impulsively got in the car and drove out to a town called Pataskala, Ohio. I parked right in the middle of Main Street and walked around with my digital camera shooting everything I thought looked interesting.
I'm glad I did. It was a nice autumn Ohio morning. Anyway, here's what I got:
If this is what I think it is, it's quite a rarity. I believe it's referencing a traffic light permit. If that's the case, this little sign outlived the signal it permitted, as this intersection is controlled only by a stop sign. Either way, the sign references the Ohio Department of Highways, which means it's from before 1972, when it was renamed the Ohio Department of Transportation.
Some sort of electrical box marked "15". I suspect this may be related to the aforementioned traffic signal, if it existed, but that's just a guess. Can anyone identify that logo?

Does your part of the country lack small towns or trees?

Ah, that makes sense. This part of the country is naturally deciduous forest, so that kind of tree thrives here...
Remember back in the 50s when they'd record like Elvis singing YOU AIN'T NOTHIN BUT A HOUND DOG and then they'd turn the record over and reverse it and it was all NYERP NYERP NYERP NYERP NYERP and people were all like, "That is actually the voice of Satan coming from that song."
My part of the country has both conifers and deciduous trees, but loblolly pines are by far the most predominant species.
[/showing off things I learned in biology classes]
Around here, we have both loblollies (lots of them) and deciduous trees.
Also, CA might be interested in this: I saw a Nationwide commercial the other night where the old N logo showed up on a flag. It was brief, but it was nice to see.

Wow, I don't even remember Nationwide's old N logo.

Bunch of stuff from the last month. The pictures this camera takes (the same kind as mine, borrowed from Mother if I forget my own) are pretty big, just warning you now:
The sign for Street Market is intact, even though this store seems to have been closed for "expansion" for a year or two now. (This building's facade used to be brown; it was painted white, I assume, to help cover up the now barely-visible Cub Foods labelscar)

Fuck yes, remnants of Cub Foods.
I love it when stores show giveaways of their past lives...
Also it seems like every Barnes & Noble looks the same inside nowadays.
Wow, they seriously used a sharp turn sign where they should have used a right directional? That's pretty sloppy.
Also, the old Nationwide N was nice to see because what was essentially our favorite TV station back in Palmyra, WXEX/WRIC out of Richmond, was owned by Nationwide back then. I remember wondering why they had a static logo with the credits and not a big-budget, cell-animated acid trip like Metromedia would have done in the 1970s or early 1980s.

Eww Arial.
The NYC subway signs seem to be one of the more prominent uses of Helvetica. They've used it since they started experimenting with digitally typeset signs in the late '70s and early '80s, but it didn't become the city's official subway typeface until 1989--prior to that it was what they called "Standard Medium", which was actually Akzidenz-Grotesk!
Yeah, there are better examples of the PWC signs that are left-justified and use Helvetica. They're pretty common here, but most are also outside the reach of the Google Street View cameras.
And yeah, when I was there back in 1999, I saw plenty of the old Akzidenz-Grotesk signs.
So anyway, I always did think these three buildings in Skyline City, VA (near Bailey's Crossroads) looked like something out of a 1970s/1980s Universal action-adventure show. In fact, they kind of look like shorter versions of 10 Universal City Plaza!

Odds and ends from this morning that didn't make it into my posts in the US 62 thread:
So I finally found out what this funky old tank in Baltimore is...I pulled up the old USGS maps, and they confirm my suspicions that it's a gas holder. I hope BG&E isn't still using that thing...
Yeah, exactly. The thing has got to be at least 60 years old (it's attested on USGS maps from 1953) and it doesn't look like it's ever gotten any upkeep.

While digging around in the family's computer room I found a backup disc from 2008 with a bunch of photos on it. They were mostly pictures of the family, but there were a few things worthy of posting here.

Seeing how Azteca América lasted less than two years here, that's probably a good decision on their part.
I don't think Columbus's Spanish-speaking population is really big enough to make it profitable, unfortunately.

This is a Meijer store I posted pictures of...about a year ago, actually. But I went and took some new pictures, because (a) Mother's new phone takes better pictures than mine does and (b) I wanted to capture some of this year's Christmas marketing.

For some reason Meijer's use of ITC Franklin Gothic alternately makes the place feel "cheap" to me or appeals to me because it's not a "neutral" humanist.

I know what you mean. They don't seem to use any typefaces that don't come with a basic install of Microsoft Office, which makes it look "cheap" at times (this particular decor package especially), but at the same time I kinda feel like it gives it more character, especially compared with Wal-Mart's completely flavorless Myriad.
(I mean "flavorless" in the literal sense, too; Myriad tastes like tap water to me.)

I now have The News Image Plus stuck in my head.
JCT 605 assembly on former OH 161, proving the previous sign is a lie.
