This is an old one, but...the lone shopping cart makes it for me.

Why is that notable? Well, traffic reporters like to use them as a landmark. Until 11 years ago, they affectionately called them "the twin towers"...as you can imagine, ever since 9/11 they've started calling them "the twin tanks" instead.

I'm wondering if "2nd Right" was a City of Columbus job...usually ODOT is less, well, sloppy than that.

The older ones did, I think...though the stripes on this one have faded a whole lot; originally they would have been bright and gaudy.

I keep thinking that eventually people will get tired of earth tones and decide to go "colorful" again.
Sometimes I feel my preference for bright or vibrant colors over earth tones means I'm immature. Is that unfounded?

John K spends a lot of time on this very subject at his blog (muted earthy tones vs. bright unnatural primarys) and other bits of color theory. Very interesting reading if you ask me -- practical too, I've put it into effect with my art which I think is an improvement.
Remember back in the 50s when they'd record like Elvis singing YOU AIN'T NOTHIN BUT A HOUND DOG and then they'd turn the record over and reverse it and it was all NYERP NYERP NYERP NYERP NYERP and people were all like, "That is actually the voice of Satan coming from that song."
That could be better or worse than filling it with green food coloring for St. Patrick's Day. I don't know enough about it to tell which.

An Ohio State Highway Patrol car. Some time in the past year or two the Highway Patrol switched the lights on their cars from red and blue to just blue. I don't know why.
The entrance to what is now the Senate building. Note the stuffed pigeon above the door--this area has been enclosed since the restoration in 1993, but originally it was open and pigeons would roost in the area between the buildings. The stuffed pigeon commemorates the so-called "Pigeon's Run", named such because legislators would run between the two buildings to avoid the pigeons.

What happens when a new county sheriff gets elected? Do they repaint the car or make a completely new one? I know this is a dumb question, but I'm hoping it's the former.

That's a good question. Common sense would say just get new lettering for the door unless the whole car is up for replacement anyway, but "common sense" and "government's use of tax dollars" aren't always concepts that go together.
So anyway, those old-timey water towers with the bulging tops and the curved plates on the bottom? Horton invented those. And the ones I've seen in several places with the fluted center column and legs around the outside? Horton again.
It seems like every major advance in steel elevated tank technology in the mid-20th century US was an arms race between CB&I/Horton and Pittsburgh-Des Moines. They even "borrowed" each other's patents!
This beast in DC is pretty much identical to the tower in the second patent.

I'm thinking I might make Thursday night cameraphone dumps a regular thing, since often I catch things during the week that don't warrant a post on their own.
I need to start going around with my real camera again, but as it turns out I don't often have it on hand when I come across something interesting, unlike the cameraphone which I carry with me all the time... >_>

Also the second tallest building in the last picture (the one in the distance on the left side of the street) is the Ohio Supreme Court. At some point I'd like to go downtown with my actual camera and get pictures of that and the Lazarus building.

The one on the right? That's the LeVeque Tower. It's notable for being one of like three of Columbus's skyscrapers that's actually at all memorable in appearance.

And grey.
I am not the most colorful person.
