My family was taking a walk earlier and we discovered something pretty cool: Blacklick Metro Park actually has a trail that goes alongside Blacklick Creek and passes under Interstate 70.
Remember back in the 50s when they'd record like Elvis singing YOU AIN'T NOTHIN BUT A HOUND DOG and then they'd turn the record over and reverse it and it was all NYERP NYERP NYERP NYERP NYERP and people were all like, "That is actually the voice of Satan coming from that song."
Now that you've mentioned it, I see it too.
I have to agree with Justice and Anonus here. Also, even though it's not the main focus of this set of photos, I really like the look of the forested part of the path from the first picture.

Oh, heh, I didn't even notice that. That's an "enhanced" milemarker...in urban/suburban areas in Ohio, we have those every 1/10th of a mile. Below the "111" there's actually decimal indicating the exact mileage.
Interestingly, Ohio's use of the enhanced markers predates the national standard for them, which has a different design:

Should I move this thread to Artistic pursuits? That category didn't exist when Anonus made the thread, but it seems more fitting...

I thought that was cool, too.
I've always kinda liked that haphazard look you see when they remove the drop ceiling but leave the lighting fixtures. They still hang in the same spots, but they're no longer aligned strictly to the grid...

Doctor Who reference in Pokemon B2W2? Headcanon accepted.
Is there something to a grocery store having a visible open ceiling like above? I remember as a kid there was a new grocery that opened in town directly across from the old main one and it had an open ceiling. It's long gone now (the new one that opened) and replaced with a, uh, Home Depot I think.

I don't know. I noticed a while back that Kroger stores built in the past 10 years or so tend to have open ceilings, while most of their older stores have drop ceilings unless they were taken over from another chain. I'd assumed the switch to open ceilings was to reduce the cost of building a store, but the fact that they're removing existing drop ceilings as they remodel the stores now makes me think it's at least partly an aesthetic decision.

A few (cameraphone) shots from today:
Today was the last showing of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom at the Ohio Theatre, so when my father and I went to buy ticket's for Wednesday's Willy Wonka showing, an employee was out changing the marquee.

Well, location is a big factor here. Downtown is primarily a business district--not a lot of people live there, and most people from elsewhere in the city aren't interested in driving that far out of their way to spend their money.
Buckingham Square, as I understand it, was actually successful for several decades before its decline began. Columbus City Center, on the other hand, was only open about 20 years, and much of that time was spent in decline. The rapid failure of City Center was taken as a pretty sure indication that this part of the city isn't really suited to retail, so instead they turned it into a park that they hope to use for events, to draw people downtown.

It occurred to me that I forgot to post here the last time I took some pictures, so here it goes.
As part of the major I-670 reconstruction going on right now, the bridge over Cleveland Avenue had to be torn down and replaced with a wider one.

Dunno. Laziness probably...why bother building the correct one when you can just stretch the one you already have?

Something weird happened today: a train somehow ended up stopped on the tracks across the main road out of my neighborhood, leaving traffic backed up for at least half a mile.
It's just sitting there. Note the lack of brake lights--the drivers just turned off their cars to save gas.

I have a giant backlog of photos from my trip to Michigan and DIA, so posting them all will take a while. But here are some (they're huge in size, warning):

Oh man, I've been waiting for this one!
First: Please tell me I'm not the only one who noticed something amiss with the "Delicious to Go" sign.
DIA looks like fun! Neon Food Court signs always make me think of the Target Greatland stores of the 1990s, somehow.
I notice both airports use Frutiger--one of my favorite signage typefaces.
The Meijer looks a lot like the one in Gahanna, Ohio, though this one appears less run-down than Gahanna's, aside from the damaged signage. Somehow that Meijer decor package feels more like the Meijer I remember from the '90s than the one that came before it.

For fun, I showed my family that picture and had them guess the mistake...only my mother spotted the "s".

Here's a few cameraphone shots of a Menards store that just opened near here. The visit was unplanned, so I didn't have a better camera with me...apologies for the poor quality.

I thought so too.
I also thought it seems like an added amount of effort. Most stores would have just slapped a Helvetica Neue "Seasonal" on those aisles and left shoppers to sort out for themselves what is where--I appreciate the attention to detail.

I love that neon clock at the Cottage Inn, and the State Theater's sign. What can I say, I'm a sucker for neon.

The night shot of DIA is cool. I've always liked that blurring effect you get with lights at night.
Michigan seems to be one of few states that enthusiastically embraced ClearviewHwy. It seems MDOT can use it for almost all new signage...
Omitting the "M" in a Michgian route shield (as in your M-17 photo) is actually the standard practice when the shield is used on a larger guide sign like that. Presumably it's to allow the numbers to be made larger--I'm tempted to look up Michigan's MUTCD but their site is down now.
I notice some of the signs have full-width exit tabs and others, well, tabbed exit tabs. I wonder what that's about.

I want to save the pictures of the park itself for a time when I know more people are online, but here are some of the other pictures from Saturday's Kings Island trip.
The Jeremiah Morrow Bridge on I-71 is the tallest bridge in Ohio. Both its spans are in the process of being replaced to accommodate a third lane of traffic in each direction. To keep enough lanes open during the project, ODOT is building the new southbound bridge between the existing bridges. Once it's finished, they'll temporarily reroute northbound traffic onto the new southbound bridge and then demolish the old northbound bridge to build a new one. Quite clever, IMO.

I keep forgetting to post these, but now seems like as good a time as any. Here are some photos from a trip to Kings Island (an amusement park outside Cincinnati) last weekend:
One of the park's most recognizable attractions is a 1/3 scale replica of the Eiffel Tower. You can take an elevator up to an observation deck...here are some pictures I snapped of the park from the tower:

That first pedestrian signal is strange...it looks like either side could display either symbol! The second one looks like the ones Columbus has been installing for a couple years now.
That courthouse looks cool. Our courts here are in a huge commercial-looking building, so seeing courthouses that look like courthouses are cool.
I don't think I've ever seen a McDonald's like that before.
In the last picture...my eyes got drawn to something else...can you guess what it is?

Yep. Specifically, the fact that next to the one is a sign indicating dual left turn lanes. Usually protected-only phasing is used with dual left turn lanes, so seeing a doghouse (i.e., protected-permissive phasing) stuck out to me.
...Would you be able to find that on Google Maps? I'd like to look around on Street View...

Curiouser and curiouser. It is indeed a protected-permissive turn for dual left turn lanes, but...help me out, I want to make sure I'm seeing what I think I'm seeing here. In the doghouse in that view and the supplemental five-section on the corner, which light seems lit to you?
(Also it amuses me that you spell out names like "Twenty Eighth Street" for some reason.)
I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
In the first one the regular signal's red light appears lit to me, in the second one the doghouse's green light and that of the signal to its right appear lit to me.
I spelled it out because that's the name of the shopping center those restaurants are in.

It looks like...and this is just a guess...that particular intersection uses Dallas phasing.
If you don't know what that is, basically it means this: the straight-through lane has a red light, because oncoming traffic has a protected left. But the left turn lanes have a green ball--not a green arrow--meaning they can turn left, but they must yield to oncoming traffic and wait for a gap.

For some reason I noticed the little "W Interstate 70" sign in the last picture.
The icon on the electric vechicle charging signs (the gas pump with a power cord) is actually a rejected version of an icon proposed for the latest MUTCD—the icon that was adopted is simply the normal gas pump icon with "EV" written on it.
