After Big Bear went under it sat empty for like 8 years...now it's split between a Roses and some beauty supply store I forget the name of. Which is a nice turn of events, really, because I'd figured that after being vacant so long it was more likely to get knocked down than to be occupied again.
I think the greenhouse Kroger in Charlottesville might still be open, but I'm not sure. Mom used to go there occasionally when she wanted to get stuff Food Lion didn't have.
Also, Roses is blah, but still, better than tearing the thing down.

It doesn't even fit in with the neighborhood, really. It's not like this is New Albany, where it'd be among a bunch of huge mansions and rich-ass gated communities; it's your typical run-of-the-mill 1950s/1960s suburb...

^ How good are you at sculpting? :P
Also in the last photo I initially misread "202nd Av/Birdsdale Av" as "202 Av. Birdsdale Av", as if it were one of those bilingual Canadian signs that puts the French "Avenue" first and the English "Avenue" last.
Remember back in the 50s when they'd record like Elvis singing YOU AIN'T NOTHIN BUT A HOUND DOG and then they'd turn the record over and reverse it and it was all NYERP NYERP NYERP NYERP NYERP and people were all like, "That is actually the voice of Satan coming from that song."
Oddly, I haven't seen any MLK statues in recent memory despite Atlanta being his childhood hometown.

Weird, I would expect at least one in Atlanta given that they've long been a majority black city.

CA: I'm sure there is one, and I just haven't been in the right place.

I've never properly been to Atlanta myself; I've just passed through on I-75 and I-85 on the way to Newnan.

My community college has a statue of Christopher Columbus.
It's like, we can't think of anyone actually from this city to commemorate, so let's just go with the guy who has the same name.

Not anything particularly interesting, but some stuff from this morning (23rd April):
Some cars lining up behind a work vehicle as it drove down the road. The lead vehicle was moving very slowly, the white pickup with the strobe lights immediately behind it seemed to be a "shadow vehicle" to keep the traffic behind it traveling at a slow pace and a safe distance.

This is, like, the one time of year we get nice green grass here. By the time summer rolls around it'll be uncomfortably hot and the grass will be all dry and prickly.
Heh, I knew you'd comment on that logo. Yeah, our local high school ripped off the Yellow Jackets mascot as their own. They call it the "Hornet".
I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
I have a huge backlog of unshared photos, most of which I have put into albums. These include the pictures I took in Michigan last month, some of which will be selected from their albums and explained in another post. From home, there are these:

You know, I don't think they ever had Super Target in Columbus. When Target first moved into this market 20-25 years ago, they went exclusively for Target Greatland stores, as they worried vanilla Target wouldn't be able to compete with Meijer. As they've phased out Greatland over the years, though, we've ended up with only plain Target and PFresh.

The only 7-Elevens in town are near OSU's campus, so I've never had a reason to go there.
I get the impression you spent a lot of time on US 23...I notice you managed to catch some of those older-style guide signs with the cardinal directions underlined. Sweet!

I guess I did spend a lot of time on US 23...and no, I don't the red light flashing.
Also, there were navy blue-and-maize (Michigan Wolverines) colored road signs in Ann Arbor but I literally could not manage to get pictures of them. Whether it be a combination of somebody driving too quickly and the bumpy roads or the fact that at one point I dropped my camera and could not find it...

Heh, that's ok. I miss shots of signs all the time for those very same reasons, so I know how hard it can be to get them sometimes.
Also, I just noticed the crosswalk signs also have rectangular rapid flashing beacons. Basically, when someone pushes the crosswalk button, those little LED strobes beneath the warning signs start flashing a stuttering sort of pattern, like emergency vehicle lights...it's been found to get drivers' attention better than a standard flashing yellow light, but as the little yellow sign warns, it doesn't require drivers to stop the way a red light does, so it's still important to watch for traffic as you cross.

I remember Kmart using ancient DTS registers back in the 1980s, especially at the one in Barboursville, WV where my grandparents lived. Then they switched to the big Fujitsu registers with the dot-matrix displays, which I first remember seeing at the Roses in Charlottesville around 1986 or 1987. Now they're using IBMs, I think.
As for the grocery stores, Giant Food has always been IBM (3660s with the Big Red Switch at first, then 3684s and 4680s), Shoppers was using NCR for a long time but I think they may have switched to IBM (at least for proper lanes; the self-checkouts are NCR), Food Lion has always been IBM, and I haven't been in enough Safeways to remember what they were using then, but they're definitely all IBM now.
Oh yeah, and before they closed, the Weis Market in Manassas actually still had DTS registers in service. And they weren't integrated, either; credit and debit cards went through a VeriFone.

Heh, that is amusing.
On a semi-related note: Is 911 really a concept that still needs to be advertised? Almost every police cruiser or fire truck you see has "EMERGENCY 911" lettered on it somewhere, and I've seen places (US 36 in Delaware, Ohio comes to mind) where there's just an "EMERGENCY CALL 911" sign randomly placed by the side of the road.
I mean, 911 service has been available since before a significant portion of today's population (myself included) was born...

It's so weird to see snow in May like that. Rarely happens here...
Nice grade crossing in the first album.
I'm glad to see the Century Aurora is alive and well.
There also seems to be a lot of asymptotic interchanges along I-80, ones where an east-west route approaching from the west turns south, and a east-west route approaching from the east turns north.

I think that's how the Shining ended (book).
But the massive boiler explosion demolished the entire hotel in the book.

Also, what is with the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets logo in the second-to-last one
You caught this sign from just the right angle to make it look kinda cool.
I love how that single Dairy Queen has like three different logos strewn about.
Your campus looks quiet and calm. It's a big difference from my community college's campus, which is overrun with people at all hours of the day.
I have never been in a 7-Eleven.
"All other cars will be french-fried!" Somebody thought they were being so cute with that one
I'm not sure which is more amusing, the two red reflectors randomly attached to the sign, or the traffic cone that's so dirty it looks more like a witch's hat.
Well that's a little dramatic. Also, I'm curious: "...bus when light is flashing. It's the law." What does it say above that?
I don't remember what it says. Honestly I took that picture mostly because the guy looked like Dennis from Shasta McNasty to me.
