Sort of on-topic, but definitely amusing: (source is here)
In response to Cathy’s post – my sister works at a TV station in Charlottesville and tells me horror stories about dealing with the Simon-owned Fashion Square Mall there in town. About how anytime they try to do a story there, they’re constantly bullied by the mall security cops who will not under any circumstances allow them to film inside the mall. I think they even tried to tell the Charlottesville police chief that he had to leave to premesis – which went over like a tin balloon. I don’t understand the arrogance or the logic behind that. It’s not a top secret government facility, it’s a public shopping mall.

Oh, I forgot to mention that Simon owns Colorado Mills too (having bought out its previous owner, the Mills Corporation; Simon also owns the Town Center at Aurora).

I took so many pictures today that I'm tempted to just link to the album I created for them on Imgur...maybe even just pick out highlights to explain/show off.

The redundancy of the turn prohibition signs in this picture amuses me. I guess they subscribe to the "if people ignore your rules, post more signs!" school of traffic control.
I find the "ATTRACTION" sign oddly appealing, for some reason.
Union Station is cool-looking. I see it's under construction! Also its clock tower reminds me of Back to the Future.
The Dallas Street sign...the l's are backwards! I wonder how that happens in an era where such signs are laid out digitally.

Yaaay BSB updates
That's a cool clock tower, too! What is that building, if you know?

I found that amusing, too. He's stylized in a completely different way than the dog icon.
The manmade pond...to make it look "upscale", I guess? Ponds like that don't really occur naturally in Ohio, so sometimes developers add them for aesthetics.
Remember back in the 50s when they'd record like Elvis singing YOU AIN'T NOTHIN BUT A HOUND DOG and then they'd turn the record over and reverse it and it was all NYERP NYERP NYERP NYERP NYERP and people were all like, "That is actually the voice of Satan coming from that song."
The "NO" in "NO FISHING" appears to have fallen off or been painted over.
C'MON GUYS LET'S GO FISHING IN THIS GUY'S POND YAAAAY

I think someone scratched it off.
Presumably someone who also knew the pond has no fish and decided to be a smartass.
Not so much mundane things as "stuff I didn't want getting lost in the main thread": These are the computers my college had on offer as recommended purchases in 1995:
Option B is missing because that's the one I actually got—a Pentium 75 with 16 MB and a 540 MB HDD. These machines were seriously overpriced even then. Also, there's a few mistakes in the descriptions; the biggest is that the Pentium machines had PCI video and something like 2 or 3 PCI slots.
Also, this is what the PC 350 P75 looked like. The one I had came with a Panasonic proprietary CD-ROM interface (for the OMG DOUBLE-SPEED CD-ROM) and a cheap Sierra-based sound card that wasn't compatible with anything except Windows 3.1 and OS/2...and NetBSD, for some odd reason.
One tidbit I remember (and that I found out sometime after the fact) is that the motherboard in it was not made by IBM, but was actually an early Intel Desktop Board with Intel BIOS (customized by IBM, of course). I've seen Dell using Intel boards from time to time as well.
The D had a Pentium 90 in it instead of a Pentium 75. Of course, if you felt like overclocking, it was just a matter of flipping the right switches...the motherboard could go up to 133 MHz if your processor was up to it.

The description of FreeBSD as "a public domain UNIX" amused me, for some reason.
Also, in the photo of the computer, I find it funny that someone placed labels above the ports ("KEYBOARD", "MOUSE", etc.) when they're already very clearly labeled. Is the word "keyboard" somehow clearer than a small icon depicting a keyboard?

I pulled out some CDs to dig out old photos for a friend and I found some stuff worth posting here.

There are two intersections along Jersey Street that have only one traffic signal facing each approach. This setup has been obsolete for decades--current standards require at least two signals for redundancy, in case a bulb should fail--but existing intersections were grandfathered in. That, along with the fact that both intersections seem to run off the same fixed timer, seems to suggest these haven't been upgraded in a very long time.
(Oddly enough, the signal heads themselves are relatively recent hardware--like, from the past 20 years or so--indicating they've been replaced at least once without adding redundant signals.)
Observant viewers may have noticed something "off" about these intersections...there's no bloody traffic! Both signal clusters could easily be replaced by simple two- or four-way stops with no ill effects. I get the feeling these signals mainly still exist as ticket fodder for the local police.

I suspected it was something like that, though I hadn't bothered to look it up yet.

Since this seems to be the thread for general anorak findings:
You know what? Fuck your private road, fuck your gated community, and FUCK YOU TOO. If I had my way, you'd be maintaining the ROW all the way back to the next town, motherfucker. >:P

I'm confused as to why that needs to be a state highway to begin with. It doesn't look like it actually leads anywhere...
Or is Virginia one of those states that has a bunch of "secondary" state-maintained highways that are little more than glorified access roads for places nobody else wants to maintain? That seems to be a weirdly common thing in some parts of the country (see, for instance, the huge number of four-digit KY highways)

Decimals used with miles always irritate me. It kinda strikes me as wanting to have your cake and eat it too--we can't use metric, no sir, but we don't want to deal with these pesky fractions any longer.
And really, if it's .24 miles, would it really have been that big a stretch to just round up to .25 and post "1/4 mile"? I imagine more Americans have a reference point for quarters of a mile than they do for arbitrary decimals.

Yeah, that's pretty much what's going on here. There are very few private roads in Virginia for that reason. (And that's why I mentioned the "next town" in my little rant; you'd think the sensible thing would be to run a private-use road from there to where the state primary road really starts, but nope...)

There was a sign like that in Palmyra that said something like "ROAD ENDS .05 MILES". You could actually see the end of the road unaided. Thanks for that, Captain Obvious! :P
If you Google the Hicksville, NY address in the last entry there, it turns out that's Sleepy's. Oh well, Mattress Discounters was pretty much dead anyway; they'd managed to get themselves entangled with RoomStore, and I suspect they went down together.

Hahaha, that's less than three hundred feet!
I think the most egregious case of mile abuse I've seen was a sign on Central Avenue in Delaware, Ohio warning of the low clearance of the infamous "can opener" railroad underpass. There's one westbound sign that gives the distance to the underpass as "5/10 mile". Really?

Also, one side effect of the substandard underpass's existence: Route markers with an amusing number of banners!
I don't know why they're allowed to call it "temporary", considering neither the railroad company nor the city has any intent of replacing the underpass.

Also, it does seem to resemble the NYC Subway signs.

An empty "greenhouse" Kroger! Those kinda seem to be disappearing—the one in Westerville (which is still an active Kroger) was remodeled beyond recognition, and the one in Gahanna was torn down to make way for an expansion to their high school after a larger Kroger Marketplace opened a block away.
Also, omg combination Big Bear/Harts. There was a big one in Whitehall when my family lived nearby in 1994-95, though by then they were branded as "Big Bear Plus". I have only vague memories of the place—I recall at least one instance of going grocery shopping there with my mother, my grandmother, and my great grandmother; and at least one other time I was there and saw Sega games for sale.
