I was in a bad way when I wrote this. I was angry and confused and conflicted.
You have to understand that when I wrote this, I could not comprehend the value of mercy. It didn't make sense to me. Why would someone give up personal gratification for the sake of someone they hated? Now it makes sense. It isn't between you and them, it's between you and you.
By debasing yourself in committing vengeance, don't you yourself become in some ways a lot like the monster you want to kill? And now there are two monsters, one of whom believes they are just. There's nothing more dangerous than that, and the world is the lesser for it.
