Got an artefact Executioner's Axe with the Speed Brand, rF, rN, and lets us fly. Those last three are good by themselves, but is speed good on a weapon that's normally this slow? I have no idea how the thing works.
It changes it so your attacks only take 66% as much time to complete.
So a weapon you manage to get to min. delay (normally 0.7) would complete attacks in 0.4 and 0.5 aut. It's awesome, and I've never actually seen it on a non-short blade.
I've run into some of my old ones and they don't retain any of their spells, although it does seem to factor into the ghost's talk flavor (eg. "[phantom] briefly changes to a spider and back!")
I think Conjurers are really the best path for Octopode Casters, or possibly Wizards
The problem with the other spells is that they start off with close-range or somewhat close-range spells. Magic Darts allow you to soften people up from far, far away.
Ehhh, I sort of disagree. While there's no doubt that Conjurers are pretty strong thanks to all that attack magic, Air Elementalist gives you access to Swiftness and Repel Missiles, which are both awesome utility spells. Wizard also gets Repel Missiles, along with Blink, and Mephitic Cloud and Conjure Flame are both really awesome early game spells.
It's a toss up. Conjurer us probably better for the races that more glassy, and other backgrounds can offer great utility spells for those races that can already survive the early game.
idk my most successful spellcaster runs (not that that is saying much) have been as Draconian Conjurers of Vehumet. Your spellset is narrow but deep, if that makes sense. Especially since Vehumet will offer you spells consistent with your aptitudes.
I feel like Wizards get kinda screwed unless they get a good spellbook early on just off the ground. And I've never really tried Air Elementalists so I guess I just wouldn't know, there.
anyhow speaking of Draconians, if I am a Green Draconian and cast Ignite Poison, do I take damage?
Personally, I go for diversity; Conjurers have spells useful for quite a while, so I'll go Sif to get utility. Conversely, when I use a class with more utility spells I'll go Vehumet for the damage they lack.
Anywho, I lost my character in pretty much the dumbest way possible. Started going down Elven Halls right after the Snake Pit, floors 1 and 2 were easy, but floor 3 I got into a fight that was just a bit too much for me. I tried Stepping From Time a couple of times, but there was always an elf right there to re-engage the fight. At least once I ended up with no elves immediately around me, and I probably would have survived if I had remembered to cast regeneration, but instead I decided to just rest until elves found me. This time I tried to fight my way out, but I got double tapped by a bolt of acid.
RIP, Foo Fighter. I will remember your sacrifice always.
Just a heads up to 0.15 players: Due to a bug that has been in since April and wasn't noticed till a couple of days ago, Dith doesn't increase stealth, and Yred's umbra and the Ring of Shadows make you less stealthy.
To be frank, it was basically only because I found a Golden Dragon Hide before I picked a god
So my thought process was basically "Well, should I wear this? Because the strength requirements are so steep, that even if I put all my points in str-oh right! Chei!"
But even so, I think winning with one of the harder to use gods out there is a feather in my cap. And demonspawn aren't exactly known for being super powerful either.
So I started playing this again for some unknowable reason. Switched away from Troll Berserkers to Draconian Transmuters. I was doing all right at first (for me), then I couldn't get above level 3--because I read a guide and it led me astray, I think. But now I'm on a run where I've actually been using Sticks to Snakes and that (and a more sensible skill training distribution) turns out to be what I've been missing all this time.
In the furthest run I got, I worshipped Qazlal and got swarmed as every monster on the level came at me at once. This time, I carefully weighed the options of "have some trace of subtlety" and "be surrounded in a constant neverending elemental explosion". So I'm probably going to die that exact same way again.
Sticks to Snakes is an extremely versatile spell. Shame they made it so you can't use it on clubs anymore.
One of my top 5 runs was with a Cat Transmuter, and I rode that spell all the way out.
And yeah, Qazlal isn't a good god of choice unless you're always down to fight (dtf). If you have to flee to safety every few encounters, as Transmuters often do, you're better off with someone else.

So having taken this advice, I rolled a Gargoyle Fighter specifically to go Qazlal.
Between some good item drops and being made of stone, I was near-invincible. Then an elf banished me to the Abyss.
Okay, I survived not one but two trips into the abyss, and then got killed by, after dispatching all the elves (as well as a sphinx and some hydras and various other hangers-on), a couple of floating weapons with elemental brands.
Comments
(I could have survived if one of them hadn't been carrying a bunch of stones and throwing them at me for 20 damage apiece.)

Unrelated: does anyone have any idea how hard modding this game would be, hypothetically?
Also does anyone know where the tile_show_player_species option is in the config files?

Also, ignite poison does not affect the caster.
But you know what? This is the furthest I've ever gotten and I'm damn happy right now.
