I don't understand how people can hate media players or prefer one over the other.
You can if you don't like a certain program insisting on scanning your music folders for all MP3s with album art and making two hidden file copies of each piece of album art and adding them to that MP3's location, every time you turn it on for more than five seconds.
The rest of the dislike comes from Winamp and foobar2000 having more intuitive interfaces, which I can control via ZXCVB and arrow keys, as well as capability to handle lots of plugins, including those that can play video game music formats.

VLC here.
Actually, I don't mind Media player in that WHEN it works, it usually gets all the audio settings on my movie correct without me having to play around with it.

It does, yeah.
I prefer it to VLC as far as actual playback goes, though VLC's UI is nicer.
I switched to SMPlayer on Ubuntu because VLC would choke on DVDs on this laptop, for some reason.

I used to use iTunes then I used Clementine but then I said "fuck it" and just started using Spotify

I seem to be the only person who wants to watch DVDs anymore.
But it's like, my hard drive isn't big enough to rip the entire 6 seasons of The Powerpuff Girls to, so what choice to I have?
Also: I still need to rip Beauty and the Beast, keep forgetting that
I hate hate hate hate hate hated RealPlayer. Back in the day, it was the only way to watch certain things if you were stuck on dialup (or just had a lot of people to serve with limited bandwidth), and it sucked equally badly on Windows and on Linux (doubly so for me because I was a weirdo that ran FreeBSD at the time).

I've tried using QuickTime Alternative and RealPlayer Alternative before and they don't quite work.
Thankfully, no one uses .rm, .ra, and .mov formats anymore.
Man, it sucked back in the day when one of those formats came up. I'd be like "Shit, I have to open one of the FORBIDDEN programs." What would be worse if I'd manage to use a new computer or new operating system for several months without having to install either and then I stumbled on a file I wanted to play in one of those formats...
I'm fine with iTunes myself. Despite the recent interface change being a bit jarring at first, it has a pretty neat organisation system and I like the aesthetics.
I have good reasons, though: I got QT because TF2 requires it for rendering Replays and it works if you want to view a GIF on your hard drive without having to open it in a browser. VLC I just have because...eh.
QuickTime isn't that bad. It's just very basic and requires silly modifications to do fairly simple things. I'd rather deal with it than WMP or VLC, at least.
RealPlayer is a royal pain, though. And I've been on sites where I've needed it...

I'm not sure if it has improved since the years I've used it, but I do remember a little piece of my soul dying every-time I was forced to use it back in the day.

QuickTime? It has. That being said, I still barely use it and prefer to not have to.
Then again, I haven't used VLC in aeons, either, so I'm probably being unfair to it based on bad experiences.

The dude has like a bank account with a billion dollars in which he donates the interest every year to charity. He is so damn rich he can afford to be a philamprothist long after he's dead.

I approve.
But what if I uninstall Windows Media Player? Will that break anything?

of course I don't know the apparently ecstatic joy of foobar2000 so what do I know

Billyplayer for playing music while gaming, since it eats 80% less memory than foobar

Although if I can get Foobar to look nice AND synch my iPod I will switch to that immediately.
I'd love to have Perian back though, it turned QuickTime into a legitimately good product. An achievement if I'd ever seen one.
