  • POE lets you respec really easily. I'm doing this for RP
  • what games are there that allow you to customize your character but have a relatively simple character build scheme
  • I have cut a caper with the dancing mad god
I like it when games offer a way to respec, but make it difficult to do. I don't think it's necessarily bad to punish people for investing in incompatible skills.
  • the problem is more that it's usually (willfully) obtuse

I thought that was the case in Pillars of Eternity but I may be confusing it with that other TRPG that came out at around the same time.
  • I like it when games make it easy to respec because I am the kind of person who will literally spend three hours deciding where to put a skill point otherwise.
  • You are the end result of a “would you push the button” prompt where the prompt was “you have unlimited godlike powers but you appear to all and sundry to be an impetuous child” – Zero, 2022
    R-E-S-P-E-C

Find out what it means to me
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
    wrong thread?

no, they were talking about games that let you respec and i was making a dumb joke about it

I mean WoW used to have spec trees but now they're spec straight lines.

Yeah I'm okay with a steep cost as long as the option is there and not also on fundamentally limited resources.
  • ATTENTION EARTH CREATURES

I have recorded a very important Youtube Video about a video game

  • floppin' around

IN OTHER NEWS the Switch has been detailed a bit further: it's $299, comes with the dock, a pair of Joy-Con controllers and the controller grip, and will launch on March 3 alongside Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

A sequel to Splatoon and a new Mario title called Super Mario Odyssey will also be making their way to the console by the end of '17, and the console will also see new entries in the Fire Emblem, Shin Megami Tensei and Xenoblade series.

SMT tells me what I suspected, that they're trying to combine the console and portable markets to get third parties onto their main console.  Hopefully it works for them.  I'm a bit sick of buying consoles for all of one non-shovelware developer.

As someone who's used to paying $10 or less for a game, I am definitely finding it hard to transition back to console gaming.
  • It's interesting that Nintendo has kind of been running counter to the whole "bigger and better hardware!" thing for a few console generations now.

That said I don't think I'll be picking up a Switch any time soon, just don't have the cash. Maybe later in the console's lifespan.

  • Touch the cow. Do it now.
it occurs to me that many heapers weren't even born yet the last time I bought a console.
  • Last console I bought was a PS4 last year.
  • I was kinda hoping the announcement would have something to make me interested in the switch, but my thoughts are basically the same as when it was first revealed.

Namely: three hundred bucks is a lot to pay for a handheld, and I don't want a home console. (Especially since I don't even have a TV.)
  • Munch munch, chomp chomp...
The idea of speedrunning any game longer than like 30 minutes with strats and all in play sounds like hell to me, and even factoring in how calming it can be (which I get and have felt), I do not get it.
  • Touch the cow. Do it now.
A game like Super Metroid (which a good player can finish in under 2 hours) is about the limit of speedrunning length as far as I'm concerned.

Can't really see the point of speedrunning a game if even the speedrun is gonna take like 7.3 hours
  • My dreams exceed my real life
Well most of your first playthrough of Super Metroid will be spent bombing walls, so I could see why that would go fast
  • last time i bought a console was in like 2012 or 2013

last time i bought a console new, however, was around 1990-1992

also i can understand speedrunning a game longer than half an hour, but i just have little patience for actually _practicing_ speedrunning it
  • Touch the cow. Do it now.
I am offended by your comment and fart in your general direction

So some asshole on Kongregate decided to rip off one of my favorite indie games.  I'm pretty sure there's a circle of Hell for doing that.

On the plus side, it inspired me to play the real thing again.  It's...exactly as balls-out hard as I remember, but I got about halfway through it in a few hours.  The star levels are a lot less scary since I remember the general strategy of what to move where.
  • kill living beings
a friend showed me snakebird and i was like oh that looks cute and fun not realizing that it's the fucking hardest game i've ever tried to play
  • It was actually you guys that pointed me to it in the first place.  I think Ys was the only other game I've fallen in love with that fast.
  • (Crosspost from my personal)

    Like five hours into FFXIII

I'm sure it gets more involved later on but building your first tenth of the game around action that hasn't developed at all is completely asisnine. FFX had extremely simple combat for its first bit, and 1. It was still more complex than FFXIII, and 2. ***Action wasn't ridiculously over emphasized in the beginning of FFX***
  • This game is tremendously damn bad, I'm legitimately flabbergasted, I never expected it to be this immediately terrible. I was hoping I'd have a more mixed take, but I really see no way it can get better.
  • I'm certain at this point that the game's scoring system *actively disincentivizes paradigm shifting, its one active element of choice*

    Insane
  • image Wee yea erra chs hymmnos mea.
    ???

There's a lot of bad things to say about XIII, but you should be paradigm shifting pretty much constantly.
  • I mean, like I said, only five hours in, but still, *every battle so far* where I've just hammered auto-battle I've gotten five stars, and *every time* I've even attempted a paradigm shift it's docked at least one star.
  • Maybe I haven't built my team properly but with the game being super easy up to this point and the way the game introduces mechanics (that is, poorly) I really don't have any idea
  • I'm being a bit too negative perhaps, I mean, I am having fun, but this game is a trainwreck.

Damn beautiful, though. And this part I'm at with Snow alone fighting Shiva(s) is weirdly engaging
  • Okay, after a real stinker of an opening we're finally approaching some surprisingly functional storytelling
  • My dreams exceed my real life
You know what game is beautiful and not terrible

    ...
    ...
    ...

    ...

    nnnnnnShadow of the Colossus
  • I remember when StrawhatNO LP'd Ni No Kuni, they commented that it's still a better game than FFXIII because at least Ni No Kuni lets you move left and right.
  • IJBM: TvTropes treating the Twist of Knights of the Old Republic 2 as if it is the most brilliant deconstruction of EXP in gaming even though it... isn't..... at......... all..........

Insofar as it is a "deconstruction" of EXP it doesn't really work *at all* because 1. The first game used the same mechanic 2. Your party members level up too 3. I'm pretty sure the game has level scaling?

It is absolutely a great criticism of the largely unquestioned power fantasy of a party-based RPG, though.
  • Funny thing about NieR now is that the only thing I recognize from NieR is That Guy Whose Head Looks Like A Moon With An Odd Face.

So apparently there's a new NieR game and other people were talking about it and I said that I knew someone who kept on showing me pictures of that one character and I couldn't describe very well who it was and they thought I was talking about this one fanservicey female character.  lol
  • My dreams exceed my real life
Which is sad because it's going to bring back Boar Drifting

    With bonus Moose Drifting
  • so who is moon face nier character anyway
  • image Wee yea erra chs hymmnos mea.

She seems to be all people talk about, concerning the game

Well, I mean, she is the main character of an as of yet unreleased game.
  • Touch the cow. Do it now.
    someone mention fanservice???
  • image Wee yea erra chs hymmnos mea.

    That

Is not why people are talking about her. At least, in the pits I go spelunking in.

Thing is, there's genuinely very little else to talk about WRT the game. :P
  • kill living beings
well we all know how it's going to end. 2B is killed by the black box reaction except it actually teleports her back to the time when Tokyo existed but it becomes clear that this was a Tokyo in a previous iteration of the universe and her presence changes history such that after several centuries of events only explained in novelizations and self-contradictory interviews the Dead Or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball universe is created.
