I don't know if they ever outright stated "this feature directly replaces the reply function", but when they removed the reply feature they promised they were replacing it with "something better", and then this is the next big feature they roll out, so I can't blame anyone for putting 2 and 2 together...

I don't get why they're rolling it out in this bizarre fashion instead of just automatically making it available to everyone.
I can only assume they're trying to stagger it so they don't have thousands upon thousands of people slamming the server at once trying out the new messaging.

It's funny, sites like Google and Facebook are so good at creating the illusion that rolling out new products to all users at once is no big deal.
But Google and Facebook have tons of money to throw at extra computing power to handle the spikes. Tumblr...not so much.
