with no context at all "he's in my avatar" sounds like some New Agey type thing

If you want New Agey-type things I can switch back to Cadpig

If you want -type things I can switch to a Daws Butler character
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
He's talking about what the word "avatar" literally means. What it would have meant to the few people who would have known what that was in 1920.
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
    well yes

    I was just being silly
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
    OK.

So is thinking what that would sound like to someone from 1920 in the first place, really. It is all very silly.

Sometimes I like to fantasize about teaching people from the past about modern technology.

It doesn't have to be that far in the past, either. How would I explain a modern tablet computer to someone from 1990?
  • kill living beings
it's like those things they sometimes use in business, except a million times faster and you mostly use it to send textual messages about sandwiches to hundreds of strangers.

it's like a padd from star trek except we mostly use it to broadcast sentences about sandwiches

Tumblr's block feature is not working for me and it's really frustrating. I'm not sure if it has to do with an XKit conflict but I really don't want to see posts from awful blogs on my feed.

"tumblr turned having decent values into a commodity and a bragging right, now everyone is scrabbling all over each other trying to reach ideological perfection, not out of a willingness to do better, but out of fear of isolation from their peers or the thrill of feeling morally superior to everyone"

feelin' this tbh and i'm not even an anti-sjw in the slightest
  • it's not a bad sentiment but whenever I see someone make a post like that it's always some anti-SJW blog.

I do occasionally see things that make me raise an eyebrow (calling Pearl bird mom is offensive to Jewish people?) but I dunno, I just kinda don't care?

Harassment is one thing, but usually it's just people making inane posts, and inanity is bothersome but not moreso than the alternatives on other large websites.

I use reddit too and that place is usually a lot worse, even if it is still tolerable in places.
  • But generally speaking I kind of turn my nose up at any "and THIS is what's wrong with THIS specific group of people" thinking.

    Maybe it's my problem.
  • meow meow meowtherfuckers
it wasn't an anti-SJW blog in this case, haha

    i don't know man, i don't like a lot about tumblr's attitude but it's def vastly preferable to 4chan

not a big fan of how people will literally call anyone whose views don't line up with theirs human garbage and scum (Donald Trump? Sure! People that ship something problematic that are probably like 13 years old? Um...)

plus there's a lot of unwarranted self-righteousness that i've noticed in people i know irl that obviously use tumblr

like this one girl i know that hates bernie sanders and talks about how you can't trust him because he's a white man...and she's super white

idk man there's a lot of good things about tumblr but the bad things about it are really, really bad
  • But Bernie Sanders is Jewish? That girl is uninformed.

anyway, I live in the sticks, so I don't know. I guess I just don't know any of those people. And honestly I'd rather deal with leftist infighting than nazis any day of the week, but I suppose that's a false dilemma.

I do think people often use terms like "problematic" or just "wrong" when what they actually mean is "weird".

Shipping can be weird, I wouldn't really describe it as wrong most of the time.

People on tumblr can sometimes miss the nuanced approach to all things.

Not everyone is like this however, and there's generally quite a few posts that work towards adding nuance to the debate.

But that also comes with the fact that nuance is a thing that needs to be grasped.

It's like early-wave feminism rhetoric in that sense, rejecting the patriarchal norm of being a house-wife without accepting the nuanced approach that some women will choose to be house-wives.

It is however a great amount of "Anti-SJW" that tend to melt down nuance in almost every single instance they can.

I'm starting to get annoyed because I've seen about 2 posts saying that Helga/Arnold is an abusive ship because of how she acts towards him, comparing it to Hiccup/Astrid in How to Train Your Dragon? I made a post about how it sounds off to me and tried to not sound like an asshole but I have a bad feeling that someone will come across it and blast me over it.

    corrected link

the other one has some weird redirection thing going on
  • a convincing argument for the badness of comics
  • on a more serious note: I would defs agree that people in general will more readily point out wish fulfilment characters when they are female, and that that's a problem, but I still don't like that sort of character usually
  • We can do anything if we do it together.
I also want to say that most "Mary Sues" (male and female) are ultimately doing on some level what Stephanie Meyer did with Bella Swan.

Dismissing her as an anomaly is part of why things like
    Twilight exist.
  • My dreams exceed my real life
Things like Twilight exist because teenage girls want pandering nonsense, just like teenage boys do.
  • We can do anything if we do it together.
Well yes, and there's really nothing wrong with that.

It's just that things like Twilight or indeed most Batman media that's not Bruce Timm-related subconsciously reinforce odious gender roles, and that should be commented on.
  • My dreams exceed my real life
    Okay
  • We can do anything if we do it together.
    ... Did I just pull a Kex?

    I'm sorry if I did.
  • We can do anything if we do it together.
    ah, good
  • kill living beings
is that some kind of obscure elbow muscle
  • I always hated the Batman comparison, tbh. For one thing, Batman didn't start out with all of those qualities; those were added by different writers over literal decades. For another, it's well known that the main thing about a Mary Sue isn't so much the character's traits, but how buttkissing they get from the narrative. And Batman has gotten way too much of that at times, and that has garnered complaints. I mean, it's arguably half the reason why nobody likes JLA: Act of God.

We can do anything if we do it together.
Yeah, thinking about it, Sword Art Online is probably a more apropos male equivalent to Twilight than Batman is.
  • ... Did I just pull a Kex?

    I'm sorry if I did.

    ?

  • My dreams exceed my real life
I don't know what that means either
  • People IRL use my name to describe insulting things all the time, I dunno why I was offended by it this one time.
  • We can do anything if we do it together.
Basically, I was worried I talked about that too obsessively to the point where people didn't want to engage me anymore.

    I'm sorry for upsetting you.
  • Munch munch, chomp chomp...

Basically, I was worried I talked about that too obsessively to the point where people didn't want to engage me anymore.

    I'm sorry for upsetting you.

Suggestion: Next time just say that.

Unless you're "Pulling a Hecatia/Crystal" while be an asshole. That's acceptable.
  • kill living beings
i'm pulling an icon in that i am great at all times and not melting
  • Man is a most complex simple creature: see what he weaves, and how base his reasons for doing so.
I feel like Iron Man is a sue by now.

Not comic book Iron Man, who is an alcoholic and thus nobody fully trusts.

But movie Iron Man, who is not allowed to be an alcoholic. And people don't trust him because he's too clever and unstable, which just reinforces the narrative that he should always be trusted.
  • Yeah, thinking about it, Sword Art Online is probably a more apropos male equivalent to Twilight than Batman is.

I've actually seen Ikki Tousen being called the anime equivalent of "Twilight for boys", but SAO works too.
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
Ikkitousen is too blatant in every respect, and there are too few male characters.
  • TBH Mary Sues don't "hurt" anyone, but very few instances of bad media do: we know this because the ones that do (twilight, 50 shades of grey) are explicitly pointed out. I mean, you don't see Sharknado hated on as much and in terms of quality it's around the same.

There's nothing inherently wrong with liking something bad if it doesn't hurt anybody. I hate the shit out of SAO, but the worst it can do is cause people to grow a sense of entitlement (something much better things than SAO also do). But that also doesn't mean that one can't criticize something for being bad*.

    * although especially vitriolic/selective criticisms (like the ones mentioned in the post) do warrant criticism in and of themselves
  • Man is a most complex simple creature: see what he weaves, and how base his reasons for doing so.
Iron Man doesn't hurt anyone but me because I'm sick of looking at his stupid fucking face.
  • Sup bitches, witches, Haters, and trolls.

Yeah, thinking about it, Sword Art Online is probably a more apropos male equivalent to Twilight than Batman is.

now I'm just thinking of how Smokie always described Bakemonogatari as "Twilight for boys".
  • I'd probably use Eragon as the Twilight equivalent. Not exactly the same, but same medium, same 'everything revolves around this one snotty teenager' mentality, same hackneyed use of existing tropes (though Eragon's more likely to copy wholesale than to alter foolishly), and same horrible morality (Bella's complete dismissal of everyone who isn't a loverboy or related to a loverboy, Eragon's complete contempt of anyone who doesn't worship at his feet)
