R.I.P. The 2976 American people that lost their lives on 9/11 and R.I.P. the 48,644 Afghan and 1,690,903 Iraqi and 35000 Pakistani people that paid the ultimate price for a crime they did not commit
For the record this is the post I'm talking about
I don't want to sound condescending because the likely intent of this post was well meaning
but
The closest thing to a source I could find that corroborates the numbers used was pretty unreliable, and the numbers were of casualties, not deaths and IIRC they didn't even exclusively consist of civilian casualties.
So in addition to being a pretentious "I'm above paying respects to people who died on 9/11" post, it's not even, like, factually accurate. And I feel like such a shitty person saying any of this, and that's why this is all so damn frustrating.
most counts are about one hundred thousand iraqis,
that said i hardly think that is insulting to people who died on 9/11 or their families and such. they're just numbers. it's not like, fuck y'all americans, it even has the same requieset in paccce
The comparison is framed in such a way so as to condemn people for caring about 9/11. The fact that this is the time of year where that post's activity spikes makes that really really obvious.
yeah... if you're going to be mad at people go ahead but find a better post than one that reads as banally true if you don't decide it must be hostile beforehand
This isn't a matter of predisposition. I like my high horse well enough and it's not like I'm going to get overmuch validation from talking about this or anything.
i mean if i wrote "2976 Americans died in the 9/11 attacks and about 115000 Iraqis died in the Iraq war between 2003 and 2012" would you read it as hostile to the dead, because that's pretty much the same content as this tumblr post, with error corrections, and it is boringly stated fact

i understand your sentiment but i think it is here misdirected
For what it's worth, I'm with Kex on this one. Not necessarily sarcasm, per se, but it does have a sort of 'okay, yes, this tragedy, but what about this tragedy?' sort of feel that a lot of tumblr posts have.
Timing in itself is kind of awkward. We can talk about how 9/11 screwed up the Middle East and allowed the American military to mainline the national budget, but maybe not on the two or three days when the survived of 9/11 victims are most likely to be sore about what happened?
^^^No, because it's placed in a different context, but also because the framing of the post is changed with the removal of the sarcastic "RIP". Plus the fact that the numbers were super super wrong was not trivial to the content of the original post.

I mean, it's not like I'm directing my ire at the notion that the fallout of 9/11 wrt American foreign policy was much, much more disastrous than the event itself. And it's not like I'm policing the expression of a person hurt by the issue, considering a Swedish person made that post. I'm irritated with a very specific tendency in Tumblr activism.
Also surprised that no one pointed out that 9/11 didn't cause the war in Iraq.

what's really funny (in the terrible sense) is that iran was originally about to assist the US in the whole "fighting al qaeda" thing but then that speech
they weren't even on the same side and it was sold to the public (here, at least) as though it was part of the same fight as Afghanistan
so stupid
It was the same here. It's still really shitty to think about.
Obama's certainly not perfect (drone strikes are frankly terrifying), but I'm really thankful he managed to de-escalate and withdraw. (I also want to shake everyone who thinks "oh, both parties are the same" and yell at them that every Republican candidate has said they want to attack Iran, for no good reason)
I've been seeing ads around here bashing the deal that are basically "HERE IS THIS SCARY LOOKING IRANIAN DUDE, NOW GO TELL YOUR CONGRESSCRITTER TO VOTE NO".
Man is a most complex simple creature: see what he weaves, and how base his reasons for doing so.
Superheroes can seem like huge assholes sometimes (comic book Avengers, cough-cough), so that even their enemies seem reasonable.
And there's the fact that superheroes by definition enforce the state of affairs, and as supervillains oppose them, they stand for change (even if a lot of the time the change is "everybody dies").

I know a guy with truncheons, I guess.
There was a specific time in around 2008 when there was a huge bunch of cover-ups, deceit, last minute measures, where the public was kept in the dark about the Scarlet Witch re-writing reality. I like the Scarlet Witch and I didn't like that, but whatever. And like...they didn't do it to keep the world from panicking, they did it so that the institution as the Avengers could continue as they were. And they fought other heroes, they fought governmental agencies, they fought amongst themselves, nothing made sense...
...and that was the moment when I thought; "Maybe there shouldn't be an Avengers if this is what heroes do to protect it." It's not like I wanted superheroes to be gone, it's that they became exceedingly corrupt. And more than that, I knew they'd do nothing about that socio-political corruption.
At least with Infinity, they took that corruption and placed it as a desperate measure against the end of everything, and they still didn't win, and it finally meant something.

and yes, it's "well this tragedy but also this other tragedy", but in this case they're obviously related (lol)
