Exactly why I don't use it. Connotations are important. But even if I'm saying something negative, just using the shorthand "Tumblr" doesn't really have that many negative connotations other than that Kex doesn't particularly feel like specifying the broad, amorphous, unnamed Tumblr faction he's referring to today, but that he's pretty sure that the people he's talking to know he's talking about the same unnamed group that he always does.
  • Man is a most complex simple creature: see what he weaves, and how base his reasons for doing so.
All my friends are assholes already, it's not like much has changed after they spent time over there. They just became more irritable.

You need to trust people to find the right way, whatever that is. Do I know what that is? No, because I'm a goddamn fool. And neither do you, and you're no fool.

Most of the time, as long as they're not harming people too badly, whatever they are is what they need to be right now. And they'll change in time.
  • Well aware. Faith isn't an issue. Patience is.
  • Man is a most complex simple creature: see what he weaves, and how base his reasons for doing so.
That's true, I didn't come into this patience until quite recently, and I still lose my cool.

SJW is basically the same as political correctness in that it started use as leftists criticizing other leftists for being a bit nasty but then got co-opted by rightists who find leftism itself offensive

  • That's a really good comparison, although it's interesting because it's a term that was also claimed by the people it was talking about. (I'm guessing "warrior" was really sarcastic originally.)

Oddly enough, the first time I heard it, it was "SJA" (Social Justice Asshole) which rather gets the point across.
  • You are the end result of a “would you push the button” prompt where the prompt was “you have unlimited godlike powers but you appear to all and sundry to be an impetuous child” – Zero, 2022
The only thing worse than people who self-identify as "SJW" is people who self-identify as "anti-SJW"
  • There's also a difference between actual advocates of social justice and the types of people Kankri is parodying.
  • Kankri is a weird case I think because I've met many people who could be described as "SJWs" and none of them are like Kankri. Hussie tends to start by parodying a concept and then go off in a completely different direction than the initial idea (see: Problem Sleuth, where the shallowness of the parody is half the joke)
  • Sup bitches, witches, Haters, and trolls.
I think the bits where Kankri goes off on Mituna for not being a "model minority" so to speak are probably the most solid as far as "nasty SJ behavior" goes
  • You are the end result of a “would you push the button” prompt where the prompt was “you have unlimited godlike powers but you appear to all and sundry to be an impetuous child” – Zero, 2022
The thing I think Hussie nailed as far as Kankri goes is the way he accidentally insults marginalized people by acting as though they can't speak for themselves

That shit happens a lot on Tumblr

arguing that sexism isn't important so he can continue blathering about something else

I don't even remember anything about what Kankri even talks about. I just glaze right over it.
  • I don't think Andrew's weird approach to parody is a bad thing, but all the "bad SJWs" I've encountered emphasized the latter half of passive aggression to the almost full exclusion of the former, whereas Kankri is... if anything, like, a shitty white male feminist I guess? He used the terminology of Tumblr but his character is more the acoustic guitar college sensitive dude than fourteen year old who doesn't know how to contextualize newly understood facts of the world. I mean, fundamental to the toxicity of the environment stems from mob psychology, confrontational mindsets, dogpiling, all things resulting from directionless multitudes rather than the isolated pretension that Kankri exhibits. A few of his more specific, on the nose traits were spot on but overall I'm not sure I'd say he's an accurate parody so much as an interesting character in his own right.

In which we find out the truth is somewhere in the middle.
  • I haven't read Homestuck in literal years now, but Andrew always seemed like he was having a rollicking good time with his fanbase.
  • More people have said that and been killed than there are thorium decay products.
He used to but he's made it clear he can't handle his gigantic and increasingly insane fanbase anymore and so he doesn't interact with it.

I've seen some of what goes on after an update. The shippers and the Vriska-haters are terrifying.
  • But his fanbase was already bloated and insane when I last saw it.

    Did it get THAT BAD?
  • More people have said that and been killed than there are thorium decay products.
Yeah, it kind of did. 2012-ish, probably.

I left around 2012-2013. I think that was when we were meeting the Ancestors?

The fanbase was fucking rabid, even back then. I'm scared to see what it looks like now.

it's probably died off a bit since then just because of all the hiatuses
  • THIS MACHINE KILLS FASCISTS
Yeah, the hiatuses made a lot of people lose interest...which means a lot of the people left are even more obsessed. -_-

I did that thing I do where something gets dense, so I skim through it for a while, and then I really lose track of what's happening so I just kinda stop.
  • I kinda lost track somewhere along the second Intermission.

I still have a vague idea what's going on, but I also have no idea how they're going to resolve what happened in Caliborn's masterpiece...

didn't this happen with MLP:FIM too?

(the hiatuses on MLP:FIM did a lot to throw me off of that particular train, I admit)

    A perplexingly entertaining oddity.

No one let me get involved with this. Tie me to a mast like Odysseus and no matter how much I cry or scream, don't let me get involved.

I hate you so much Haven
  • One thing I don't really get are those arguments floating around that X character isn't white and is actually [insert ethnicity here]

I mean, a case COULD be made for Harry Potter being Jewish (Radcliffe is), but making him Indian?

I get that you want representation, and it's not like this actively harms anyone, I just find it confusing.
  • It's one of those challenging reading white as default things. The sort of thing that gets introduced when readers are so used to white as default that even when someone is explicitly not white in text, it gets glossed over.
  • Well, OK, that's probably worse. Still, strikes me as more of a knee-jerk thing?

I mean, ignoring canon is probably bad and - yes, I'm using it - "problematic" (in this case), but two wrongs don't make a right.

  • kill living beings
potter being indian isn't like some huge abrogation of the books. as far as i recall, the important things about his ancestry are that his mom's parents were muggles and he's descended from some european type asshole or another. mom can be indian or something, bam.

like it's not really important that he be welsh or whatever
  • Well Rowling herself did pick out Radcliffe, who is at least apparently white.

  • yeah but the films and the books are not the same thing, as shown by the many (mostly small but some fairly large) discrepancies between them.

    and again, who cares.

    Fair point on both counts.

    and again, who cares.

Can't say I do. This is just something I find weird.

The author dies the moment I crack open the book and that's what matters.

    I'm the author now.
