a couple of my friends have gotten really into kin stuff lately
one of them reblogged something like "people who complain about otherkin appropriating trans terminology don't have a point because if anyone was going to be transphobic because of kids on the internet they'd probably be transphobic anyway" and the other reblogged a response to that post which was somehow worse (i tried looking for it, but i only found reminders why i don't follow that blog anymore)
so it's understandable that it's hard to tell where the line is
That was an anon. The blog itself seems genuine; At any rate most fake otherkin get their kicks feigning offense (eg posts like "walking on grass is offensive to plantkin uwu") or coming up with deliberately absurd identities and correspondingly absurd pronouns. The anon is ridiculous but in absence of any of the usual indicators of trolling I honestly can't tell if it's fake or not.

I'm kind of ambivalent about kin stuff
On one hand, it seems like it's mostly young teenagers experimenting with labels and identities and I don't really have a problem with that; if you enjoy calling yourself whatever silly thing, and you're not hurting anybody, more power to ya
On the other hand, some of them try to equate it to the struggles people like my friends and me go through with regards to gender dysphoria and transitioning, and that's a bit off-putting, to say the least
Not to put zir on the spot, but I know Safeinskirts is a nonbinary individual who feels that otherkin fall in the same general category as ze does.
Honestly it's not a topic I give a lot of thought. If they're not actively being dicks to people I see no reason to try to, idk, "snap them out of it", or whatever.
Reminds me uncomfortably much of what a certain TVT friend of mine went through.
My problem is that it genuinely does seem to.be impairing people's ability to understand themselves. The example I use is a "multiple systems" person calling her middle school self a different person entirely which is a pretty unhealthy way of compartmentalizing. A lot of these things provide similar opportunities to justify shitty behaviors, like identifying as a villainous character. As for equating it to trans issues, I really don't see that being done anymore. It's considered a major Thing Not To Do.
I'm not trying to fix them, hence why I talk about it here instead of directly confronting them. I'm just expressing what about it bothers me, and I think that's reasonable.

It kind of bothers me for the same reason the "Egyptians were black" narrative does*. I understand that it comes largely from a place of good intentions, but that doesn't excuse basic inaccuracy.
*grant you this holds more water than the stuff MedievalPOC gets wrong does, but still.
Lying about race is pretty troubling but factual inaccuracies are, again, something I'm more willing to tolerate because of how important the blog's overall message is. If there were another blog doing the same thing without the research issues I'd be more willing to take issue with medievalpoc, but as it stands the backlash seems like another manifestation of an obsession with ideological purity.

No, see
I'd be with you if it was minor things. But like the thing I mentioned earlier about claiming Sancho I of Castile was a Muslim? That's not just wrong, it's like really wrong.
It's like calling Hitler a "Jewish spiritual leader". It's profoundly wrong. Wrong on a deep level.
Plus you can just wikipedia this shit, it's not hard. There's really no excuse.
Then it kind of bothers me that this is the one that got popular. At any rate I'm sorta waffling right now because the magnitude of that kind of mistake is not something that should be ignored, but the message itself is STILL really, really important.

The basic message is important but that doesn't mean that MedievalPOC should be allowed to be the sole person who pushes it.
There's other people who do this shit, increasing their exposure isn't much harder than reblogging their posts every now and again.

I fully acknowledge that I'm getting way too deep into Tumblr again, but...
If only because these kids want to make themselves "unique" by declaring themselves to be gods or goddesses when there are hundreds of them doing the same thing
And it's hard to tell who's roleplaying for fun vs. who just wants attention

I unfollowed someone the other day who was like... fictionkin and claimed to 8e triggered 8y other people pretending to 8e the same fictional character they were pretending to 8e. (no, it wasn't Vriska, it was someone from one of the Phoenix Wright games IIRC).
Sorry that's too much crazy for someone who's not even following me 8ack. ::::P

It's an inevitability, but one that annoys me a great deal.
The #actuallydivine tag is a thing of beauty
