it's a super common line cuz like marriage is a straight people thing so like gay people getting married is equivalent to erasing "gay culture" because when you have the I Also Took Intro To Sociology hammer everything looks like a culture shaped nail
how marriage is a big component of gender roles in this society and as such gay people who want to get married are abetting a system that oppresses them, achieving acceptance through going "see guys im just like you" rather than "I'm me and you need to respect that"
there is definitely a valid point in there but the whole thing ends up reeking of this overly politicized "you're either with us or against us" thinking
plus there is this whole gay subculture that has built up, and on some level the increasing acceptance of gay people in the larger society does to some degree threaten the integrity of some of the structures that go on there because so much of it is built around having to be separate
but what these people don't understand is that subcultures by their very nature change based on the wider culture and interact with it and integrate, and it's in no way analogous to things like cultural appropriation or assimilation on anything but a superficial level
that isn't even a tumblr thing, i've definitely heard the argument that gay marriage is bad because it encourages gay people to form monogamous relationships and only benefits rich gay people etc.
i think there's an argument to be made about it being less important than, say, anti-discrimination laws, but look at indiana right now and tell me that gay marriage hasn't been good for anti-discrimination laws

See, I don't actually hear shit like that. What I hear is that an emphasis on gay marriage shouldn't be so high on the priority chart when there are queer kids living on the streets, in danger, and so on.
And I've also seen those statements get opposed with arguments that state that getting people to get married has its own measure of safety and economic benefits.

Yeah, but it's been pushed so often that it threatens to encapsulate the whole experience of gayness. There's a reason why I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry shoehorned in a gay marriage for no good reason at the end.
It's an important part of normalizing things, yes, but it shouldn't be the only part. I like being allowed to marry a girl who happens to be white, but I'd also like to find an apartment for my new family without being told "Sorry, no rooms available" when there are clearly rooms available. It has to be a coalition effort.
Of course, I've essentially retired from the social justice scene, and this isn't even my minority, so feel free to castigate me as needed.

It's kind of a House of Leaves/Pale Fire type of deal where it's presented as an analysis of a work of fiction that doesn't exist, but in this case it's a fan forum analyzing the baffling final work of a cult fantasy writer.
It's pretty interesting and not like much I've seen before, so check it out.

I always did feel like Tumblr puts WAY too much emphasis on media representation. It's important, yes, but in many ways poor representation is a symptom of society's prejudices, not a cause. (Though I'm not denying it forms an unfortunate feedback loop.)

I liked the original series quite a bit, and I would like to think that Korra did become decent in the end.
At any point, I do get and agree with Myrm's point, even if I may quibble with his specific phrasing.
