  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
I said my piece to a person I'm following about this. Fingers crossed that it goes well. She's ordinarily pretty sensible and cool.

I genuinely feel sorry for whoever runs the "staff" blog and has to constantly deal with notifications from idiots raging at them over shit like this
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
    Truth.

Honestly, I do get being bothered by the fact that this stuff gets taken down when people flag equally inflammatory and skeevy shit to no avail, but let's be realistic here: Doxxing someone and putting their information up is just asking for a lawsuit, if not worse, for both the blog host and the subject of the doxxing.

Part of it, for me, is just the "well, what did you think was going to happen?" aspect.

I don't know of any mainstream, non-shady website that allows public doxxing, especially in these cases where it could easily be considered defamation.

Do these people think they'd have a different outcome if they behaved the same way on Twitter or Facebook?
  • Man is a most complex simple creature: see what he weaves, and how base his reasons for doing so.
I think yes and no. Yes, their attitudes would much be the same. No, how they expressed it would not because people have their names attached to Facebook and Twitter is just structured differently.
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
    It's misdirected anger, I think.

i guess it's kind of funny since half the reason the 8chan people are such assholes is haha of course we allow doxxing :smug emoticon: but i guess gamergate never hit tumblr that much or something

i thought that communismkills's mother thing central reblogged was funny because i'm imagining a bunch of college students calling this lady like "did you know your child does not ADEQUATELY UNDERSTAND MARXISM ON THE INTERNET?" and she's like is this a telemarketer
  • apparently people threatened to burn down her mother's house

communismkills is a nazi but still wow what the fuck

Last year, after the Boston Marathon bombings, I observed that a lot of people who were deep into the conspiracy theories were young people who had never seen a high-profile incident of that type before. They didn't realize that heavy government and security company presence for a big planned event was normal. They didn't realize that conflicting reports in the early news coverage of a high-profile crime was to be expected. Some of them even took the suspect's "not guilty" plea as a literal claim of innocence rather than a necessary legal maneuver on the part of his defense staff.

I think, to some extent, that same kind of naivete is at play here. A lot of these people who are ranting about Tumblr defending the KKK and donating to Darren Wilson and whatnot are people who, up until now, had stayed on the good side of Tumblr's rules. Now they're posting stuff that's basically lawsuit bait, but they don't realize that it's a standard practice for websites like Tumblr to remove potential liabilities, so they're attributing it to malice on the part of Tumblr staff.

It's forgivable when you look at it that way, but it still makes me want to bash my head against the nearest stop sign.
  • Yeah, seriously; plus, honestly, going after nobodies like communismkills only inflates their egos.  They only say jerkass things because they want reactions after all.
  • now that you say that that makes a lot of sense, i hadn't thought of that
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
It's also fuelled by the unfortunate fact that unless threatened with a suit, Tumblr's moderation is reeeeeallllly slow to react to content in violation of their terms and conditions. Which sucks, of course, but that's how it works.

communismkills isn't really a nobody, she's friends with a fair number of high profile white supremacist youth leaders

i mean she's not Oprah, but she is very prominent and active as those sorts of people go
  • Way good point there CA.  There's a whole lot of acting like THIS IS THE WORSTEST THING IN ALL THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD going on on Tumblr.  No, shit's normal.  Did they fall asleep in history class or something?

Not meaning that outrage is wrong.  Fucked up shit needs outraged response.  But the obvious naivete of acting like this shit is somehow unique gets to me.

ironically bashing your head on a stop sign is illegal destruction of property

    !!!!!
  • Naney: Ah, didn't know.  I had looked at her shit before, yawned, thought "just another wannabe kid racist" and did something more fun like brushed my teeth.
  • Also, Tumblr will always be faster about responding to bright-line rules violations (e.g. doxxing) than "Mommy that kid's a NAZI please ban them!" which is a judgment call.
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
True, but there are also people who straight up tell children and teenagers to kill themselves, and if I'm not mistaken at least a few outright paedophiles. At that point it steps past judgement call territory, and yet it doesn't attract enough attention so they wind up ignoring it.

    !!!!!

Does it count if it's my own stop sign?

I think part of it is a desire to feel like you're doing something. A lot of us naturally feel helpless to actually make any impact on the state of affairs right now, but attempting to get racists harassed makes people feel like they've accomplished something.
  • Moderation on any significantly large site is usually unbearably slow.

Most people aren't even aware reddit has high-level moderation (that is, moderation that goes beyond the subreddit mod level).
  • When I've reported pedo porn blogs, they've been deleted within hours.  But then photographic or video pedo porn is across a really obvious bright line.
  • ive never run across those and i gotta say im pretty happy about that

ran across a bestiality porn blog once tho, ran away screaming by which i mean i closed the tab after i stopped being like "wow i am seeing this with my eyes"
  • I've never come across non-faked pre-pubescent child porn.  I've come across an unsurprisingly large amount of way underage but older than that (say, 12-15 year olds).  Almost all of it has been solo posing rather than sex.  I always report to the site owners if it's a user-contribution site like Tumblr or the like, or to law enforcement.  Can't be taking risks of being thought to be part of the fandom there.

  • And plenty of bestiality, but I don't report that, just close it.  Bestiality doesn't morally offend me to any great degree, it's more just "Ick!"
  • edited 2014-11-29 01:39:00

i guess this is why im glad that im furry trash

no running across underaged nudes when browsing around porn blogs
  • All safely drawn.
  • That's definitely in there in a "reasons why it's better to be furry" list.

I used to know a lot of cool furries but these days I just encounter idiots on the Internets.  Dunno why.
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
Bestiality offends me in that an animal cannot give consent and I find that pretty revolting.

But thankfully, I'm in the beau's camp on this...

I love it when they make posts about obvious fake things being fake

Like on one hand you're proud they figured it out, but on the other hand it's kinda sad that it's something that needs to be announced
  • A sufficiently intelligent animal can indeed give consent IMO.  Not that it matters to me since I have no interest in doing such.  I tend to find the arguments against it are arguments that get used to deny e.g. those with disabilities the right to sex, and that part bothers me.

    “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
@Morven: I really think that it gets into really dodgy ethical territory, particularly given that most animals cannot clearly communicate with humans in what we would know to be mutually understood terms. But I would honestly rather not discuss it given the fact that it skeeves me the fuck out.
  • how do you actually link to a blog like that
  • i open the post in a new tab and copy the url?

The "folded corner" on the post itself is a permalink.

I would have never figured that out except ponicalica pointed it out to me in 2011.
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
I figured it out almost by accident. Like, "Oh, what does this do? Cooool!"
  • look I'm fucking clever as shit

    WHAT ELSE DON'T I KNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW?!?!?!
  • kill living beings
i learned about the corner thing from a post complaining that it was obscure and hard to notice. that was like a year ago and it hasn't changed
  • my entire life is a lie

next thing you'll be telling me that actually in America we measure things in farthings and furlongs, not inches and feet
  • @Sredni: given that the topic disinterests me to the point of disgust myself, glad to avoid the discussion :D
  • Sup bitches, witches, Haters, and trolls.

These people do realize that this is the exact same thing they complained about the #GamerGate folk doing, right?

I wonder what leap of logic it requires to be such hypocrites.
To be fair, at least some of the people doing these things aren't actually the same people laughing/complaining about gamergate

considering making an Amazing Science Facts tumblr that's all bullshit, like all the ones that exist, but I"d be doing it intentionally. am i the enemy

how similar to look around you will it be

hahaha more outright conspiracy theory nonsense

i don't even know what the proper reaction to this is anymore
isn't yahoo just a rebranded bing nowadays anyways
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
Yeah, Yahoo's kinda lame. For some reason it's the default search on my iPad, too...?
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
    And now it's not. Huzzah!
