There were a few posts that crossed my dash that had this Illuminati-like chain of thought connecting the facts that Walmart gave $10k to Darren Wilson, Marissa Meyer is on Walmart's board of directors, and tumblr is removing KKK doxx posts. And of course, the first one is totally false, but nevermind that.
The best part is the conclusion one of these posts came to was that all this meant that you should use Adblock Plus while on tumblr. Which is great--like, given that tumblr is literally owned by the KKK or whatever the hell, don't stop using it, just sort of be passive aggressive about it.
Admittedly, it is kind of a nice change of pace to see ridiculous conspiracy theories targeting private corporations instead of the government.
It was always funny to me that so many people seem to hold utter contempt for Tumblr but would rather complain about it endlessly than stop using it.
I mean, you see the same thing whenever there's a design change of any kind.
My pet webshow Folding Ideas did a great episode on the reactionary nature of GamerGate and even its well-intentioned proponents. It's worth a watch if you can endure more discussion of that particular ugly matter.

Frankly my dear hypersentient ferret, I am not sure I can.

I wonder if people ever notice that I reblog things from a blog called x249j and wonder who/what that is.
I stopped paying attention to who people reblog things from years ago.
Makes it especially funny when people are like "why did you reblog from X, she's a terrible person!" and I'm just like "unless that shows in the particular post I reblogged, why do you even care?"
considering making an Amazing Science Facts tumblr that's all bullshit, like all the ones that exist, but I"d be doing it intentionally. am i the enemy

I don't know why that makes me think of a non-Libertarian version of Penn & Teller
Those more well-intentioned people were the ones yelling that “#GamerGate doesn’t condone harrassment!", which is the opposite of what we're saying.
Of course, that's not to say that it wasn't completely ineffective.
Yeah but to be a well-intentioned person and support the movement you would presumably have to treat that extremely implausible 'five guys' story as credible, on the testimony of Gjoni alone.
In both cases, you have people reading something, believing it without checking their facts, and then embarking on a massive crusade against it, dismissing all claims to the contrary.
Man is a most complex simple creature: see what he weaves, and how base his reasons for doing so.
"Well-intentioned but ignorant" is indeed less evil than someone outright hateful.
But it's still an evil. If you have good intentions, anything you do can be excused. Your heart is in the right place, after all. How can we blame you? How can we ask you to change? You're trying so hard.
Fuck that. You do right or you do wrong. And if you make amends you're not getting a pat on the back and a cookie because you shouldn't have been fucking up in the first place.

I’ll admit that I’m still not entirely sure what makes the story inaccurate, especially in the wake of all the logs and other evidence that he provided. I’ll concede that I’m likely missing something obvious, however.
I will concede that Eron was only out for revenge by publishing this evidence in the way that he did, though. He was clearly mentally unstable, at the least, and he really should’ve listened to the people (including his own mother!) who told him not to publish it.

The problem isn't that it's factually wrong it's that it just doesn't matter.
No one Quinn was involved with reviewed her game. It's like trying to prove the moon landing didn't happen by pointing out that they sell toy figures of astronauts. It's just irrelevant.

Yeah, I don't disagree that the people who took that from Eron's post are ridiculous. I was just saying that Eron himself wasn't the one to suggest that.
I'll concede that, at this point, it's kinda a distinction without a difference anyway.
AFAIK the only evidence was a bunch of screenshots of chatlogs all posted by the same guy, but i'll concede i haven't investigated the matter closely so maybe i don't know what i'm talking about. The story itself sounded bizarre and unlikely to me.
Either way it doesn't excuse a harrassment campaign, but you never said it did.
Honestly, the problem lies less with him posting his grievances per se than that he knew that they would be used as a cudgel by really awful people later. I can understand being in a really ugly place emotionally and wanting to go after someone that hurt you, but the way that he did it was really petty and stupid and catalysed something way more extensive and vile than one would expect from some dude's shrill attempts at revenge porn. He knew better, and he did it anyway. Either he's really messed up or really a selfish dick.
Yeah, I was gonna say. He could be both, and they can definitely feed into one another. But really it's just sad and stupid all around how this could blow up into a freaking reactionary tidal wave.
Like, so some guy is in a shitty relationship and when they break up, he flips out and decides to rant about it and "warn people" about what his ex is like. That's nothing groundbreaking. But because of who this ex is and what terrible people on the Internet see her as representing, it turns into a massive harassment campaign. That's absurd.
Yeah, if true, it wasn't something that should have been public, and he must have known people would go after her for it.
Can i just say, i'm a little confused on this whole thing; the vast majority of people i've seen talking about this have treated the accusations as real but not explained why (and have also expressed sexist views and complained about a feminist conspiracy), while the only reasonable, measured summaries of events i've seen have made no mention of any evidence whatsoever in support of Eron's claims, and treated the movement as a sexist harrassment campaign/hate group (and it certainly has harrassed women and targeted women in particular).
i mean obviously the feminist position is that whether or not she cheated on him is beside the point, but i'd figured if the original allegations were really as well supported as all that then this would at least be acknowledged by people who aren't raving misogynists.
Like I said above, whether the actual claims are true simply doesn't matter.
He deliberately turned a particular part of the internet against his ex in a campaign for petty revenge, and it's now grown into this whole stupid thing.
I think that his claims could be at least partly true. Bad relationships happen and women can be just as manipulative and nasty as men. The issue is what came of it and what he did to provoke the very sort of people that he claims to abjure.
^ I think that's half-true, in that it doesn't justify the greater consequences which he seems to have been aware of from the start.
i suppose i'm just personally feeling a little awkward right now because it was my understanding that the original allegations were unsupported, and if they were not then i suppose i'm guilty of the exact thing i was complaining about since i implied that they were, indeed, unsupported.
Bleh, i'm tired, please excuse me for not making a lot of sense.
If the tachyon of, say, a couple hours ago were to look in this thread and see my above posts they would probably close the thread in disgust and remain angry for the rest of the night.
Also they would probably think current-me was a poorly-disguised MRA trying to start shit.
Two of the biggest pharmaceutical spam companies in the world destroyed each other because the founders were former business partners in black market credit card registries and hated each other's guts so they doxxed each other and got themselves sent to jail for fraud. It's extraordinary.
Lord. So that post I mentioned apparently got deleted, but now people are circulating it as a screenshot. Anyway, here it is in case you wanted to see the 21st century version of a board covered in strings:

It wouldn't surprise me if there was an overlap between these people and some of the more well-intentioned #GamerGaters, even.

most likely we ended up there in the same way so it's not all that surprising
fucked up

Please don't point out the irony here, i know it.
