    how is liking dogs weird?

None of it is bad; I've just noticed a tendency to be atypical in odd ways. Not a criticism, just an observation, and probably a limited one at that.
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
I actually see it as a good thing. Let's be honest: Queer women and trans* people at large but especially transmen get the shaft a lot in mainstream media. This is especially true of such people who are not white, middle class Americans. So they take what platforms they are afforded and make themselves known. Tumblr is a good platform for that.
  • Yeah, I agree, honestly. I wasn't complaining about it at all.
  • ...I put my foot in my mouth pretty far, I think. Sorry. I wasn't trying to insinuate I had a problem with any of this.
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
It's fine, dude. You're a very open person. It's not like I thought that you have lesbians with Shiba Inus.

By the way, how did that breed become a Tumblr meme?

IIRC there was one specific photoset that made the rounds, which was also the origin of the Doge meme. Then more Shiba pictures started popping up
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
I knew the Doge meme was a part of it, but it's interesting how it has become its own thing. They are very cute, cool dogs, however. A friend of mine was babysitting one and it fell in love with me in less than an hour.
  • They're very temperamental dogs, as I understand.

They'll either be your BFF, FF, FR or they'll eat your ankles.

My family had a lesbian cat once

    That was kinda amusing

    “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
Bisexuality is apparently quite common among cats, according to a number of studies, perhaps more so than in humans.
  • Man is a most complex simple creature: see what he weaves, and how base his reasons for doing so.
What Naney said just hammered in how much of our Tumblr experiences is defined by selection bias.

You will see nothing you don't want to. If you don't like something, you can just choose not to follow the people who post these things. Hell, there are even programs that allow you to block words.
  • That is how the internet works, moreso now than ever before.
  • Though I'd say that if you happen to be interested in something that has a proportion of idiots and/or assholes associated with it, it's hard to ignore.  I'm sure MLP fans have a lot of trouble filtering out both the obnoxious in their own fandom and the obnoxious anti-fandom, for instance.
  • man the mlp fandom is something else even by wacky fandom standards

like, i've been involved with / following the furry fandom for like 5 years now and in all that time i have not seen as much drama as i saw in any given month of the 2-odd years that i was a brony.
  • man i cant remember what the point of that post was now

i guess i was trying to say that the MLP fandom is a definite outlier in terms of wackadoodleness

Sometimes I feel ashamed for having been involved in both the MLP and Sonic fandoms

I still like Sonic, but I am very tired of the whole "everything has to live up to a very specific ideal we've built up or it's garbage" mentality

Though they're not identical cases...the Sonic franchise is a train that a lot of fans have been on since childhood, and it's changed over the years, and not always for the best. MLP hasn't even been relevant to nerd culture for four years yet, and the G4 fandom is wacky in a different way.
  • i feel acutely embarrassed about being involved with MLP, but i don't regret it.
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
To be honest, I feel kind of bad for people who were fans of MLP before G4 was introduced, considering how vocally disdainful G4 fans are towards anything before then.

also the brony drama was consistently higher level than other stuff that i saw. Like there would be regular eruptions of death threats against people (serious ones, not "im gonna kill you" tumblr anon ones), people drawing gore/rape porn of other people's OCs as retaliation against them for doing things they didn't like (i've never seen anything like that happen before ever), and i can think of at least three instances of notable bronies sexually assaulting or raping minors. (i can only recall the name/handle of one of those people though)

stuff like that happens in the furry fandom from time to time, but on like a once-or-twice-every few years basis and people actively try to distance themselves from those involved with such ghastly things.
  • the vocal disdain of bronies is no heavy burden to bear
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
It's so bizarre to me that a bland kids' show has inspired such insanity...

I think it has something to do with the 4chan roots + an early influx of middling-to-decently-talented furry artists looking for a wider audience

so starting with that 4chan + furries base, and accruing people who love to find reasons to be persecuted (I'M COMING OUT AS A BRONY) in large numbers

    yeah

Man is a most complex simple creature: see what he weaves, and how base his reasons for doing so.
This is true for the entire internet, but I believe it is more so for that particular platform, because of how the interface works.
  • Not a hybrid rabbit-skink spirit
Pretty sure the insecurity that so many of them undoubtedly have is a big part of it.

Really, more bronies should just be like braeburned, then the world would be a nicer place
  • more everyone should be like brae tbqh
  • Sup bitches, witches, Haters, and trolls.
    who's braeburned
  • pony artist, mainly does gay porn, an exceedingly nice person all around.

A lot of nerd culture seems to be based in insecurity over liking things that are meant for/have heavy appeal to children

It seems like the DC, Marvel and Star Wars fandoms suffer from it too

    ding ding ding
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
I think that the whole MLP fandom has it worse because it's insecurity over being a teenage or adult male and liking something explicitly meant for young girls. It's a hangup that a lot of men have taken to an extreme by a number of other factors.

Honestly, the funniest thing about this DashCon thing is that it turned out pretty much exactly how you'd expect a convention run by the kind of people who say "Tumblr should have its own convention!" would go.
  • Organizing conventions is hard even if you know what you're doing.  I suspect these people were either naive, or just saw the dollar signs.

From what I've seen so far it looks like a little of both

At least insofar as some greedy people realized they could exploit naive teenagers
  • Yeah, though I'm reserving judgment as to the accusations of outright fraud.  People are pissed off it was a mess, so I'm not sure I trust accusations of worse.
  • From what I've read, seems more like sheer incompetence than fraud, at least in most parts. Hanlon's razor and whatnot.
  • You are the end result of a “would you push the button” prompt where the prompt was “you have unlimited godlike powers but you appear to all and sundry to be an impetuous child” – Zero, 2022
Yeah, I'm not quite ready to call it an outright scam, but I definitely get the impression that some people involved are deliberately taking advantage of others' naivete.

The phrase "the DashCon melted but we still have the radio" keeps appearing in my head, but I'm not sure if that'd be stupid to say or not. :V

If it were so, I would go.

But only if it were so.

Part of me still thinks there's some fraud going on, because of that sketchy letter that asked for the seventeen thousand.
  • It's either fraud or a truly staggering amount of incompetence.

I honestly can't find much funny about this, it's just going to lead to a lot of embarrassment and regret, which is fun for no one.

i have found some of the joke images that have come out of it funny, but i agree regarding the events directly, they just make me feel sad.
