Anonus: It does strike me that some talking about SJWs has been here (including some from me) but kept at a sane level compared to pretty much everywhere else on the Internet that I've seen.  Has it caused a problem since that user was banned?  If not, that suggests the spirit of the rule is being kept, that of avoiding explosions?

Well, as was said above, it's not as bad as it used to be, but it's usually the result of Kex bringing things up if it does happen now. He isn't as bad about it as said now-banned user was though.
  • I bring it up here so often because, as I've mentioned earlier, I really do need a place to vent about it and I try (but do fail quite often, tbh) to keep it restricted to this thread.

If there's some other space where it won't be as bothersome, I'd be happy to take it there, but at any rate I like to think I've been cutting down to an extent. But for the sake of my own sanity I really do hope I'd be allowed to vent about it sometimes.

I guess my question is whether this thread can even possibly be re-railed at this point

If not, it might just be time to lay it to rest
  • you could make a personal thread

call it the Kexructorium or s/t

Well, how's about this. We start a new Tumblr thread, but also maintain a separate thread for social justice issues.

I know the idea of a social justice thread has been tried before and it met with an ill fate, but that was two years ago, and HH is different now than it was then. But if it proves too problematic, it will be closed for good. Does that sound too much like "quarantine" logic?
  • Man, I INVENTED the personal thread

(I think? People only started to make a bunch of them after I did mine.)

Actually that is a pretty good idea, I should probably get on that.

Absolutely. This is not in any way the first time drama has happened here. It tends to attract heated conversation, for better and for worse. This was a particularly bad example that's indicative of moderation issues and issues between a few Heapers, but that doesn't make it irreparable. The Emotions thread has also been a lightningrod, though admittedly not in the same way. My opinion still stands as it was before.

Also, yeah, a personal thread or two sounds like a good idea in my mind.

My only issue is that there'd be too much overlap and as it stands a thread dedicated to just positive stuff on Tumblr wouldn't really stay for long because, well, you could just post stuff from Tumblr on the main thread anyway.
  • Kind of.

I wouldn't object to a Social Issues thread if I thought it would be used constructively instead of to just go "hurr durr tumblr is so dumb sometimes amirite guys", but I doubt it would be, so I'm rather against it.

As for locking and replacing this thread, I just don't think it's necessary.
  • We can do anything if we do it together.
Honestly, I'd be perfectly fine with locking this thread. It's got way too much baggage to really be usable anymore.

I will add, though, that this is the second time a thread has been derailed into serious talk and then rendered unusable. I feel that starting a new thread for serious talk that is actually labelled accordingly might help matters. That's because you'd be able to create ground rules for it immediately, rather than trying to awkwardly retro-fit them to a thread that was never intended for such talk.

You guys can do whatever you want with this thread, and I'll try my best to roll with the punches. I just thought I'd try to offer a plausible alternative.

It's not any more unusable than any of the previous times arguments have come up. The derails and burnouts only happens because straight up confrontation over important issues, apparently, just do not go over well here. Not to dismiss the fallout of any of the recent events, of course. And really, that hypothetical serious thread might very well meet the same fate. What then? Freeze these subjects, or just Tumblr. (Naturally, this is also just hypothetically speaking.)

I feel that starting a new thread for serious talk that is actually labelled accordingly might help matters. That's because you'd be able to create ground rules for it immediately, rather than trying to awkwardly retro-fit them to a thread that was never intended for such talk.

As I see it, concrete and consistently followed ground rules are what we need, not some new thing so we can just lock this up and treat it like nothing happened. This isn't the first time the moderators should have stepped in sooner, which they've even said (even if, really, I think so far they've done an all right job). I think Anonus or Centie have brought up the issue of consistency too.

Also, the idea that this thread was "never fit" for such talk is kind of confusing to me. It'd be like starting a Reddit thread (or a different site, if you wish) for Cool Stuff We Found, only to suddenly back off when, lo and behold, someone linked something Cool that also happened to be a lightningrod for heated discussion.

Maybe a separate thread for discussing all of these important and excitable topics would also be a good idea, one which I'm not necessarily opposed to, but locking this up now strikes me as a vaguely knee-jerk response.
  • REAL TALK TIME that Fxxk Boys Get Money song is lame as hell and i'm tired of seeing it on my dash
  • Man is a most complex simple creature: see what he weaves, and how base his reasons for doing so.
I really like it, so every time I see it, that's a repost.

    Sorry.
  • Sup bitches, witches, Haters, and trolls.
i kind of liked some of the effects but the song itself got grating fast, like, within the first watch
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
    Never seen it.

I did hear the new Grimes single, though. It is... odd? It starts like one of those trap-inflected Top 40 pop singles, and then everything goes haywire in the middle, and then it's boring again. I liked earlier stuff from her, at least a little, but I don't know what to make of the new stuff, at all.

I like how the one word that tipped them off was "parse", which is an actual word

But realtalk why are you reading fanfic

i don't think parse could be parsed off as correct in most contexts "parse" is used in

I am asking unspecified person on tumblr.
  • kill living beings
unspecified person on tumblr doesn't much like ur tone, mister
  • Man is a most complex simple creature: see what he weaves, and how base his reasons for doing so.
That's super-lazy. I mean, you can add spaces and punctuation to your CTRL+H function so it doesn't do it to letters within other words.

YOU CAN GET TO THE "REPLACE" DIALOG WITH CTRL+H???

*has been using Microsoft Word since 1997 and never knew this*
  • Man is a most complex simple creature: see what he weaves, and how base his reasons for doing so.
That's how I assume the fanfiction writer was doing things.

Might not be universal to all text processors.
  • kill living beings
or if you have proper regex replace, just \barse\b
  • why would anyone unfollow me over me wanting to be turned into duke nukem and then fucking a my little pony

It depends on the pony, really.

Man is a most complex simple creature: see what he weaves, and how base his reasons for doing so.
    Dashcon

I think the main problem with DashCon to begin with is that it’s extremely difficult to have a convention for a website that is, essentially, just an amalgamation of various vastly different interests. Like, conventions typically have a set group of people with certain interests in mind, like anime conventions are centered around anime and similar interests. There are teacher conventions for teachers and there are religious conventions and just. So many. For everything.

But you see, that’s the problem. Conventions have a set demographic of people in mind when planning. DashCon was doomed from the start because of many, many reasons, but one of the biggest was that Tumblr has so many varied different interests and people and demographics that it’s just too wide of a spread to have in one convention. Like, okay, I’m going to have a Facebook convention. It’s for everyone that uses Facebook. Come to the con and we’ll talk about what we talk about on Facebook. Cool. Or a convention for people that are currently alive. Everyone alive can come, because it’s cool and since we’re all living lets just have a con.

Except, no things don’t work like that. Why would you plan and organize a con for something that merely hosts the interests of people? I’m not interested in Tumblr itself, not at all. I couldn’t give two shits, honestly. I’m interested in the content that comes out of it. Like I said before, it’s am amalgamation of various interests and content, even within a separate branch of Tumblr.

Basically what I’m trying to say is that DashCon could just never work because the idea itself is flawed.

Here's what I know of this whole sordid affair.
    • Some folks set up a Tumblr convention.
    • They named it "Dashcon" because of your dashboard.
    • Panels include homosexual subtext in Superwholock (and why they can't get enough of it), BDSM 101, and Shipping 101.
    • The contract or verbal agreement or whatever asked for payment before, and not after the event.
    • If they were not paid, the hotel staff would make em all leave.
    • In half an hour, the attendees raised seventeen thousand dollars.
    • Apparently, the stupid fucking kids are singing Les Mis songs in the hotel's lobby, harassing staff, and were generally being assholes "celebrating their victory"
    Things unconfirmed:
    • This whole thing may have been a scam.
More on this highly embarrassing turn of events forthcoming. I'm Kraken, reporting from nowhere because I'm not actually a journalist.
  • BDSM 101 is just basic knot-tying for three hours and at the end you get to make a wind-chime
  • Man is a most complex simple creature: see what he weaves, and how base his reasons for doing so.
God, I wish I was an actual journalist.
  • kill living beings
if you were an actual journalist you would not report on dashcon
  • Man is a most complex simple creature: see what he weaves, and how base his reasons for doing so.
A thousand kids obsessed with gay people making a ruckus in a hotel, causing the old folks annoyed?

That's at least a little newsworthy.
  • kill living beings
that describes every stupid fucking fan convention ever
  • Man is a most complex simple creature: see what he weaves, and how base his reasons for doing so.
Soundbytes from the man on the street in front of the hotel, talking about how none of them tipped, all of them were dressed weird, and then a few hours later he heard weird singing?

Okay, it's not newsworthy. But it is sensational.
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat

not because of the dashcon story, mind you.  because they don't have money.
  • Is it me, or does Tumblr tend to go against the grain in a lot of weird ways?

Like, for example, the rest of the internet won't shut up about cats, but Tumblr has a weird thing for dogs; mainstream media focuses on gay men, Tumblr is fixated on lesbians; stuff like that.
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
Oh, there are plenty of gay dude and cat Tumblrs. It's just that queer women and dogs have as much space. What Tumblr produces is, as goofy and frustrating as it is, way more representative of the people who use the site than most other media is of those who partake in it.
  • my dashboard is almost literally nothing but gay porn and cats.

tumblr is just the blogs you follow
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
I mean, there are just as many lesbians as gay men, most likely, and surely trans* and genderqueer peeps are fairly proportional in terms of gender? Tumblrites can be twits, but they get that there's more to being LGBT+ than the G.
