  • The misunderstanding of the meaning of "stone butch" in the definition SF_Sorrow linked kinda bugs me. And yet the people coining "lithromantic" claimed to be such?  Damn.

(Stone butches are lesbians who don't want sexual reciprocation; they are tops only, and don't want their genitals touched.  They often dress and behave very masculine, including being emotionally cold / unavailable, but these are secondary characteristics.)

I guess there's a parallel in that stone butches don't want sexual reciprocation, and lithromantics don't want emotional reciprocation, but that's a bit strained to say the least.  Stone butches DO want to be loved, by and large, even if they're not into expressing it visibly.

I also have to say that generally the "stone butch" archetype makes me think that these women are unrealized trans men.  Especially since the type was a lot more common before awareness of female-to-male transgender possibilities became widespread.

Likewise, lithromantics strike me as in need of help.  Wanting to love but hating the idea of being loved back?  That's "see your mental health professional" stuff, there.

Now I'm thinking of that South Park episode (yeah, yeah, I know, but this was one of the first ones) where they had to turn the Christmas pageant into a dull grey Koyaanisqatsi ripoff because no one could agree what should go in it.

    THIS MACHINE KILLS FASCISTS
Not Tumblr-related, but it is feminism-related:

The idea of the "Red Pill" as is commonly used now, is that men are constantly losing a war of what /r/TheRedPill users refer to as "Sexual strategy." Essentially the premise is that women have what we want (sex), and they can make us bend over backwards to get it. They have us wrapped around their little fingers. Those who "take the Red Pill" awaken to their true male potential and learn to get what they want without having to submit and forfeit their masculinity.

Essentially the premise is that women have what we want (sex), and they can make us bend over backwards to get it.

And here we have a huge flaw central to the redpillers' philosophy: Women may be guardians of sex in a normal manner, but sex isn't limited to putting your thingy in her hoo-hoo, guys.

I guess what I'm trying to say is: YOU HAVE A RIGHT HAND. USE IT.
  • Also, the fact is, (psst, I have a secret here) women like sex.  Women will do stupid things for sex just like men will.  Women date people they shouldn't because they're hot and turn them on.  It's just that our culture rarely acknowledges it.
  • THIS MACHINE KILLS FASCISTS
Yup. When my mom was single, she mooned over guys that were unavailable or abusive the same way I do women.
  • My dreams exceed my real life
"Theory: The reason Dark Souls 2 is such male-centric garbage is because it follows from the “Link the Fire” ending of 1, which is the bad ending and leads to the restoration of feudal patriarchy under the asshole Gods."

I think Tumblr played a different Dark Souls 2 than I did.
  • My dreams exceed my real life
Specifically one in which the plot was comprehensible.
  • you can like

be a woman in Dark Souls

in both Dark Souls games, actually

in fact the series is often praised for its rather gender neutral narrative

it's not exactly a feminist tract, but as far as relatively mainstream media goes, it's a godsend.
  • does anybody remember House? you know how all the doctors under house always found a disease within their purview that fit the symptoms given?

    thats how this works

you have the feminism hammer and everything becomes the patriarchy
  • You are the end result of a “would you push the button” prompt where the prompt was “you have unlimited godlike powers but you appear to all and sundry to be an impetuous child” – Zero, 2022
    That's...a good analogy actually.
  • not only have I been a woman in Dark Souls, I have been four or five separate women in Dark Souls

People were talking about Vendrick's motivation being sexist and I was like ??? Vendrick had a motivation???

  • Now, i'm not saying that gender related issues aren't components of lots of the things Junior Feminist Scouts rail at, but these issues are almost always multifaceted and require viewing from quite a few intellectual perspectives before you can grasp the whole picture.

i'm also not saying that that ??? thing that Od posted makes sense either. because it does not. i just felt the need to qualify my earlier statements.
  • A lot of it is simply the new convert fervor thing going on.  Baby feminists taking their hammer and pounding everything with it.  It's a common pattern in all kinds of things.
  • I wonder if the fact that there's constantly that "new convert fervor" going on serves to validate that attitude and prevent people from moving on from it.
  • people move on from it almost always in my experience

especially if they come into it as teenagers

The dynamics of liking or disliking a person change a lot when you actually meet them.

(I know you're kidding but still)

Also, by my estimation at least, Tyler Oakley isn't a bad person, just an absolute dumbass. I don't like him by any means, but I don't hate him.

I'm no Tyler Oakley expert though. I haven't exactly gone out of my way to find out why he's so hated.
  • kill living beings
    Tyler Oakley Ologist
  • people hate him because he's a dumbass, a shameless self-promoter, is totally willing to gladhand anybody famous that he runs into even if he's expressed hatred of them before, never apologizes for anything he does, and also because he's a huge walking stereotype and he kinda makes us look bad.

that last point is definitely not fair (nobody is obligated to be someone they're not just because they're a famous gay person) but a lot of people feel that way.
  • Ah.

The things I see tossed about are his use of a "sassy black woman" voice which... yeah, I get that, and I see people call him transphobic but I've never seen this exhibited.
  • he used to throw the word "tranny" around a lot, he's deleted all of his posts on all of his accounts where he's done that and has adamantly refused to apologize.

    “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
Yeah, looking things up, he's kind of an obnoxious twit and I'm surprised that no-one has backhanded him for some of the stuff he's pulled. Not a completely reprehensible human being, but annoying, thick and self-righteous.

^ That was what pushed me over the edge, I think.

i don't understand the fear some people have of apologizing

pretending it never happened doesn't make anyone forget, it just reveals you to be a bigger asshole than you looked already
  • Oh.

Yeah, that's what I meant by calling him a dumbass, and I don't mean to excuse it by saying that.

Yeah, I agree. I've said this before, but I'll say it again: Better to confess, repent and deal with a little shame than to dig yourself a nice deep grave while whistling out the noise.

Incidentally, that's why I've washed my hands of the Penny Arcade guys.

As bad as some of the things they've said are, their complete and utter refusal to apologize or even realize they've done anything wrong was the true deal-breaker for me.
  • They issued a really, really big apology for like EVERYTHING around New Years-ish.

They've made apologies several times before, but they haven't changed their behaviour after any of them.

I admit that I would be glad to be wrong on this one, though.
  • their problem i think is less apologizing and not meaning it than a constitutional snappiness. apologies may be meant sincerely, but they are forgotten when buttons are pressed

i have known such people before, it is an unfortunate character flaw that does not mix well with the internet, where all one's transgressions are sealed for eternity and can be seen by many who do not know you well, but it is not a sign of irredeemable terribleness.

Yeah, slow improvement of bad behaviour over time is at least improvement, so I will give them a little credit. Doesn't make anything that they said any less shitty or stupid, but it is something.

And if I'm not mistaken, one of the guys has struggled with bipolar disorder. But then, if I'm not mistaken again, he's the one who has made fewer of these absurd gaffes...

^ This is also true. I can actually sympathise even if I'm not necessarily that way myself.
  • That's... a really good way of putting it. I've never seen them give an insincere apology- when they're not really sorry things like the dickwolves followup comic happen, not apologies- but their general attitude and the ways of the internet make a lot of lessons not stick.

  • I think part of the issue is also that they were pretty integral in forming a good portion of early internet and gaming culture (and incidentally that carries with it two distinct meanings: (internet and gaming) culture and (internet) and (gaming)c ulture), and, while never embodying the worst aspects of it, never embodied the most progressive aspects either. The culture moved on, and they didn't nearly as much. But if nothing else they've absolutely exhibited an ability and willingness to change, moreso than a lot of internet/gaming old guard.

I will eternally remember Tycho as the guy who attacked China Mieville for being smug and wordy while writing blogposts that read like a thesaurus threw up.
  • ...isn't that the joke, though?

  • That was a rhetorical question. It's definitely the joke. Tycho's tone in his blog posts is thoroughly facetious.
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
To be fair, I love Mieville, but he can be smug and self-consciously wordy. But then, pot calls kettle black here.

  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
This is a moderately silly disagreement.
  • The Penny Arcade guys need to make the PAX conferences less of a social shitfest

that is the extent of my opinions on them.
