I'm saying that you let the affected people act first. You follow. You give aid. You help. You speak up. You stand for others.

But if you aren't the affected ones, then you don't lead.
    that makes more sense.

    I'm gonna like

not use Tumblr for a little while (e.g. about a week; hey, it's a while to me)

it's been stressing the hell out of me lately and it doesn't need to.
  • That sounds like a good idea.

IMO, self diagnosis has its place.  Not everyone has healthcare. Not everyone has good healthcare.  Some people are minors with abusive parents who can't trust things with their healthcare providers.

    Yessssss

Dude, you will feel so much better about everything.

Has Tumblr freaked out about today's Tumblr logo yet?
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
    What's so objectionable about it?

    Absolutely nothing.

If anything, it's totally appropriate given Tumblr's huge LGBTQ population.

But Tumblr-folk always need to get angry about SOMETHING...
  • Man is a most complex simple creature: see what he weaves, and how base his reasons for doing so.
Well if they always need to get angry about something, there's also pretty much everything they can get angry about.

Saw a couple of jokes about the colors and the letters, that's about it.
  • I saw someone pointing out that it was kinda weird that they simultaneously are sponsoring a #pride tag where #gay and #lgbtq were previously blocked mobile tags for being NSFW, but no one getting like, angry.
  • Sup bitches, witches, Haters, and trolls.
that "self-diagnosis is valid" image mostly reminds me of another thing that bothers me about tumblr, which is that image posts don't get collapsed to links the way text posts do(and should, despite tumblr users' protests to the contrary; do you really think gigantic quote pyramidsa re a good thing?)

it necessitates a lot of pointless clicking.

This post made me think but I'm not sure what to say about it.

I see where they're coming from but even as someone who's bi and genderqueer I don't really know if I agree with it.

but I am also white so maybe that's why

    idk.

I am not offended per se by white people jokes, but when I see them I do sometimes wonder if my friends who aren't white secretly hate me or something, which is really just an extension of the insecurity I have that everyone secretly hates me, but stuff like that brings it into focus more, which I think understandably makes me uncomfortable. I imagine if I were straight or cisgendered I'd feel much the same way.

Plus, there aren't just jokes as that person claims, there is a lot of outright rage directed toward majorities on tumblr. I have never been the target of any of it, but I have certainly witnessed it, and that I just find unacceptable.

But again, I feel unqualified to have an opinion on this, and so feel guilty for having one at all. Such is life. I dunno, I've seen fellow LGBTQ bloggers go livid with righteous anger over percieved slights and I just don't usually feel that way about anything, which brings me back to the idea that if you don't feel oppressed then you're not oppressed. And, generally speaking, I don't feel oppressed in my day-to-day life, simply because I am comfortable staying in the closet and always have been.

The implication I get is that because I'm bisexual and genderqueer (and thus not a Stastically Average American Person), I need to either be raging, constantly cracking jokes about cisgendered people, or I'm faking it.

Am I wrong? I may well be, but I feel that tumblr fosters community via exclusion (so does the entire internet by the way, lest you forget how often we randomly bash TVTropes here), which I don't think is really healthy.

But, again, to anyone I don't tell my life story to, I'm just another Random White Dude, so I suppose I may very well simply not know oppression.
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
I think that's a very valid way to look at it.

I don't agree with the whole argument being made there, and I think it fails to take into account people who do that in bad faith (with the understand that most probably do not), but I think it's well-articulated and thought-provoking enough to at least deserve a reblog.
  • More people have said that and been killed than there are thorium decay products.
The biggest issue I have with it is that there are middle class American straight white cis able-bodied children who have no friends and are victims of abuse and/or bullying, and that when they go on the internet, some minorities with perfectly functional lives and relationships might say something like "your pain isn't real because you're in a favored statistic" and to me it is dumb.

With that said, "jokes" don't hurt a majority the same way they hurt minorities, and certain factions seem to direct a lot of hate at tumblr social justice bloggers more because they zealously challenge social norms than anything else, but I think we all know this already. I just wish that people wouldn't squander their chance to be heard like this, but they seem to be.
  • Tumblr makes jokes about majorities to make ourselves feel better because if we didn’t we’d probably start hating ourselves as much as racist, transphobic, homophobes do.
as someone who has depression and is neither white, straight, or cis, I find this way of thinking kinda ???

like, I do think a lot of good jokes can be made about "majority", about the faultiness of humanity's nature to discriminate, but I get the feeling most of what the post was referring to are "jokes" that are really thinly-veiled vent posts

i don't mind white people jokes or cis jokes or whatever and i don't feel qualified to discuss that since i don't usually get the jokes anyway, but something in that post does touch on something that bothers me
The truth is that we’re equal, perfectly. We are all human and we are all different, and that is something that should be celebrated. Can you imagine what the world would be like if we all acknowledged our differences and loved each other even MORE for it? Not the whole “we’re all human, who cares about skin colour/sexuality/gender?” because that’s just as harmful as the opposite, we aren’t all grey blobs without identifiers. We are all so wonderfully different and that’s what makes us beautiful.
What do we think about this? It all sounds very nice and agreeable, but 'who cares about skin colour/sexuality/gender' seems like a pretty ok sentiment to me, providing it's not being used to dismiss issues of social justice and responsibility.

and, well, this is probably stupid, but i sure wouldn't mind being a grey blob without identifiers in a world of grey blobs without identifiers
  • Man is a most complex simple creature: see what he weaves, and how base his reasons for doing so.
I would hate to be a grey blob in a world of grey blobs. No identity, no markers that remind you who you are, what you are?

I'd rather be white than be a grey blob.
  • white people: cooler than grey blobs since a couple million years BC
  • Man is a most complex simple creature: see what he weaves, and how base his reasons for doing so.
Pretty much all our narratives, our fiction, our stories, are all based on identity.
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
i hate being reminded who and what i am

    i am disgusting and ugly
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
i want to tear up my identity and throw it away
  • Man is a most complex simple creature: see what he weaves, and how base his reasons for doing so.
Neither of those things are true.
  • I'm rather attached to my identifiers, but I'll admit that a world without them would be a bit easier to deal with. I'm just not sure if the cost would be worth it.

it is all true and i know it's stupid but tumblr wants me to wear my sexuality like a fucking badge, just like my horrible gender and my asshole nationality and my hideous ugly nerd face, and i don't want any of it

i don't want to feel like i'm lying when i don't tell people my sexuality, i don't want it to matter, i want it to just be a thing about me, like my favourite kind of cereal or whatever

    “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
People shouldn't have to inform other people of their sexual and gender identities and should be able to say that it's none of someone else's business without being seen as rude, yet still have the complete freedom to express that identity however they should like. That people think freedom and a sense of decorum are mutually exclusive puzzles me.

^ Yes, you should. Tell people what you want to tell them. It's about what you feel comfortable with, not what they want from you.

But I care about left politics and I want to understand and oppose discrimination.  I don't want to shut people out.

And I feel like my own self-perception is intrinsically at odds with them.

This is incoherent, isn't it?  You're right, Sredni.

    “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
Not wanting to be labelled or have your sexuality treated like anything but another trait by others does not mean that you want others to have to clam up about theirs. You just don't want yourself or anyone else to be forced into defining themselves by others or seen differently for not putting a label where others tend to. And that is fine.

^ That may be good. At least, from that aspect of Tumblr.

^^ Ah, maybe that would be for the best.  I already gave up on the site apart from a few blogs that i subscribed to, the rest of my exposure to the site is via this thread at the moment.

^ That's exactly it.  But i guess i feel like other people wave their labels around all the time, straight or otherwise, and i'm not allowed to just keep silent because that's breaking some kind of social rule.

I mean it's not just tumblr, people talk about sex like all the time.
  • edited 2014-06-29 11:53:10
    Munch munch, chomp chomp...
You're allowed to not wave around your labels just as much as I, Sredni, Yarrun, and everyone else is. As mentioned, what's important is what's comfortable for you, and that doesn't have to be at odds with anyone (even more combative personalities). And, at least in my experience, it often isn't. Granted, I haven't checked Tumblr in months, but oh well.

Further, none of this is inherently at odds with caring about minority issues, or really, social progress in general.

    v Especially if you're on a phone.

See, the problem with collapsing text posts to links is that it quickly becomes incoherent to follow the conversation if you weren't there from the beginning. There's all sorts of links and shit and half the time someone's already changed their blog name by the time you go to click the old post...

A world of grey blobs born in equal circumstances might be nice, but even then humans would probably find a way to discriminate. Differences are beautiful, though.

    equality is ideal
    differences make all interesting
being happy or proud of these differences is fine
making yourself and others seem superior because of those differences is not fine (in various degrees of)
  • Yes, there were people raging about Tumblr's rainbow logo.  Because it wasn't inclusive enough.  What about the lithromantics and their pride flag?  Did it include star gender?  Outrage.

Of course, this was Tumblr; the answer to the question "Is someone on Tumblr mad about <x>" is always "Yes!", no matter what <x> refers to.
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch

  • My dreams exceed my real life
IJBM: Tumblr is good at finding things wrong, SJW-wise with things it likes. Not so much at boycotting them to have some recognizable effect,
  • http://aromantics.wikia.com/wiki/Lithromantic

and right after I say differences make everyone interesting, I see something like this
  • Sexuality is complicated. I doubt there are many sexualities claimed by Tumblrites that aren't, in some way, existent, but you can't represent them all in a simple, intuitive manner. Besides, it's not like the colors on a rainbow stand for specific sexualities anyway; at least, if they do, it's only retroactively.
