    whoops, that's the second page

this is the beginning, sorry about that
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
    Thank you.

Either way, I get what they're saying. The blurred line between personal opinion and reporting is troubling, as is its co-mingling with social media call-out culture. I do not disagree.

I never knew mister Fred Phelps, so I am not at all qualified to comment in any way on his passing.  I despise the things he did with his life.
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
I think that is a pretty good way to put it.
  • part of me is tempted to fakepost a contrarian Fred Phelps RIP post that would go over his early work as a civil rights lawyer and include comments about white gay racism and about him being the only one willing to say the truth about "the troops" but that would be ridiculously bad form

  • say what you want about tumblr's obsession w/ Nicki Minaj

    image

but you gotta admit that it results in buttloads of cool fanart
    crosspost
  • the one thing I find weird about nicki minaj and tumblr is that I feel like having a song called "stupid hoe" would be way more looked down upon from anyone else
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
Nicki's actually pretty conservative, so in that respect a surprising obsession for tumblr

not that a Nicki Minaj obsession needs any further justification

i dream of a world where march eridan does not exist and also in that world hussie is not a racist transmisogynist peice of trash ,
    Sigh.

On the bright side, the March Eridan tag seems to have been reclaimed for the most part, so that post is atypical.
  • Like, racist, I get where that's coming from. It's a stupid accusation, but I can see where it's coming from.

But where did they get "transmisogynist" from?
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
    March Eridan, i'm guessing

although that doesn't have much to do with Andrew
  • the racist allegation makes sense from some of the old comics he did where he had things like a black dude dunking a welfare check
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
i never saw that one... did it seem racist to you?

to me the accusations always seemed rather silly
  • edited 2014-03-22 16:32:10
I haven't seen him say anything, but I've heard people say he's said he's pretty ashamed of them.

the comicwas pretty nasty. i'm willing to believe he's moved on though.

the whole person in drag = transmisogyny thing is so weird
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
    :(

    i had no idea.
  • kill living beings
you must have this much gender identity to ride
  • Nasty in the sense that it seemed like it was trying to be satirical and edgy but was really just using the stereotypes in an entirely unchallenging way. That said, those comics were from like ten years ago so I don't have any doubt that he's changed since then.

ok so here's the full rundown

looks like he made a bunch of offensive comics under the 'Team Special Olympics' name

i think he did fuck up with the race thing in Homestuck, as well; it's pretty obvious he initially intended the kids to be white or at least light-skinned (there are references to them being pink in the comic) and changed his mind about it later

which imo isn't really racist, just unfortunate; it's not racist to depict white people, nor is it racist to make race-neutral characters

the problem is that he changed his mind mid-way and pretended otherwise, like he's passing his comic off as more progressive than it is

the suggestion that it's problematic for a character in his comic to speak with (the twitter version of) AAVE strikes me as problematic in itself

He said that it was his intention from the beginning but he didn't start taking it seriously until the comic started picking up steam.

Considering the fact that his orange-skinned author avatar first appears in Act 3 suggests to me that he's telling the truth.
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
    i don't buy it, though

off the top of my head, we got a reference to Bro being white, a reference to the baby versions of the kids being pink, and John's decended from a racist Southern colonel who looks like Mark Twain

i think he changed his mind and backtracked
  • @Tachyon That one did, yes.  I think the accusations are mostly silly as they relate to MSPA, and I do think human beings can change.  As for being ashamed of the old comics, I hope so.

also there's the fact that he outright said the characters weren't black, and seems to have changed his mind about that

^ yeah, having seen the comics in question, they really were bad

So someone agrees with me on that. Good
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
i do think part of the problem is he's used to writing for a particular audience (who favour the kind of crude, no-fucks-given humour associated w/ 4chan, SA, Penny Arcade, etc.) and he's had problems adjusting to his current tumblr audience, which, let's be fair, is just a wee bit oversensitive about absolutely everything

actually i think Penny Arcade has hit a similar problem

probably something to do with the growth of the Internet and shifting user demographics

the transition from being popular among privileged nerds and being popular with a wider audience is not necessarily a smooth one
  • Tachyon said:

That particular statement was a joke.

To be honest, I don't see why "buying it" is even really a thing, unless people are going out of their way to ascribe racist qualities to him.
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
i'm not accusing him of being racist (although those old comics were pretty racist).  i'm just saying he could have handled the issue better, and i don't think he's been completely honest about it.
  • But why would he lie about it? Lord knows the guy doesn't particularly mind if he upsets oversensitive Tumblr people.
  • edited 2014-03-22 19:24:06
imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
Because i think he's changed his mind and, without giving it much thought, decided 'oh well, this comic is race-neutral so far'... which it isn't, as evidenced by the controversial reference to Bro as a 'white rapper'

i don't know why he doesn't be more honest about it, but it's obvious he's not being honest
  • It doesn't make sense though for someone who's always been remarkably upfront about his work to lie for the sake of a group of people he makes a point of poking fun at.

It makes a lot more sense that it was just something that he tripped up on a few times.
  • Again, it would have been better if he just said 'death of the author, now stop bugging fan artists'. People could draw black Lalonde/Strider without getting sass all up in their biz, and there wouldn't have been the nonsense that led to that infuriating CAUCASIAN joke.

    Uhhh....

  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
    Well, they are.

There are valid reasons to complain and there are valid reasons to be offended, but as a community tumblr is abnormally sensitive.
  • Let's go back a bit then, reinvent the wheel so to speak.

    Define sensitive.
  • Take offense where offense need not be taken, taking too much offense, or misdirecting your anger.
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
    Easily upset.
  • Give me an example of where you feel that specifically is taking place then.

the suggestion that it's racist for Andrew to depict a character who speaks using AAVE
  • edited 2014-03-22 19:47:53
imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
or take the insistance that March Eridan is transphobic

or go back through the thread; we've had people trying to bully a celebrity off tumblr because she made a joke about Justin Bieber's 'vagina', we've had otherkin who are mortally offended if their identification is not treated with the same seriousness as transgender identities, we've had someone demanding that pictures of cooked meat should be tagged with a trigger warning for graphic imagery...
  • To be fair, if otherkin were an actual thing, which I'd assume is the pretense they're operating under, then they'd have every right to treat it as if it were on the level of a transgender identity. That's begging a pretty big question though.
  • I have to admit, I was never fond about Meenah and Fish Hitler speaking black.

Just found it more stupid and unnecessary than particularly racist. Troll Nicki Minaj didn't strike me as something that everyone was calling.for.

Could call it generally racist, or problematix. Black speech given to two of the more amoral characters in the comic? Something to question.

Could you link to some of these suggestions?

I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
I thought if anyone was supposed to be "black", it was Rufioh...does that speak poorly of me?
