Hahaha, I just reblogged Morven's response to that into my queue

I don't see how I could have known that

Since I haven't talked to Morven in years

And her blog proudly displays a traditionally masculine name

It's not surprising you wouldn't know about it; she came out as MtF a little while after i left TVT.

    But you'll know in future.
  •  Physically male, but don’t always feel it.

i like how the avatars 'match' the posts here

as in they create totally the wrong impression but they look like they fit

I thought I told you Morven identifies as female now, Centie...

I found out on one of my visits back there a while back.

    I guess I forgot
  • I think Morven basically identifies as female but is sorta dragging her feet on the matter and still uses her birth name and male pronouns.

    It continues

I don't even know if it's worth trying to respond to that

Jerk with a Heart of Gold, Non-Action Guy, and notorious Serial Tweaker. All of his edits on the wiki consist of correcting spelling and grammar errors, deleting pointless Natter, and other useless BS. Likes anime, seiyuu, and dub voice actors.

  • honestly i have no recollection of who that was, besides that they were a troper.
  • it's amazing how little i remember about things
  • kill living beings
i think he mostly did stuff on the actual trope end of things? i had no idea he went all SJW before people started linking these tumblrosts
  • actually it's a little scary tbh

i don't get what his deal is in this instance - if i'm reading this right 'princex' is a gender-neutral form of 'prince'/'princess', so what about that is specifically African-American?

and it sounds like someone needs to learn the difference between copyright violation and cultural appropriation, although i don't think you can copyright a word in any case

i remember him from TVT, he did post on the forums and mostly seemed like an OK dude

he certainly didn't come off as at all SJW-ish
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
the suggestion of 'princette' as a gender-neutral version of 'prince' irritates the etymologist in me

    '-ette' is a diminutive suffix
  • I don't remember anything bad about Spork from his troping days but he was partially responsible for me losing a friend and as a result having a massive panic attack so ahahahaha fuck that guy.
  • Much as I also dislike the guy (girl? Gender-neutral individual? Not sure) it's probably not a great idea to start a circlejerk of "fuck that guy"s, y'know?

This idea that language is something that can be tightly controlled, and that certain words are "owned" by certain groups, seems to be something I see a lot from certain kinds of Tumblr bloggers. It's very bizarre, because, well, things don't actually work that way.

^^ This is also a good point.

Keep in mind, also, that this is a public forum, tempting as it may be to treat it as our private ranting space.

Augh, fair enough. But I've resented that fact for a long time. At least I got it out though.

    Yeah, you're right, Burgundy Queen...

this just bothers me, a bit

the idea of using words being cultural appropriation bothers me, as a matter of fact, since to my mind expanding your vocabulary is always a good thing

if we didn't appropriate words we'd all be stuck talking like our parents
  • kill living beings
calling someone a nigga and the word "admiral" are basically the same process, see, becuase
  • i dont think that the problem with a white person saying "nigga" is cultural appropriation
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
no, that's not what i meant at all

and i don't think the issue there is appropriation, either

  • The abandoned buildings blog that I follow (well, one of two; I'm a big fan of urban decay) got pranked by one of her friends, who decided to moon all of her followers.

I personally assumed that it was one of those 'posted smut to the wrong blog' things, but man, people got angry at seeing naked butt where there wasn't supposed to be naked butt.
  • My dreams exceed my real life
I feel like Tumblr is bad at being strategic with it's hatred.

Like, John Lennon was a douche sure, but it's less important to let people know that then to know about Churchill's views on India. Same thing with Obama's drone strikes and Arpaio's human rights violations vs Macklemore's clumsy attempts to support LGBT people and Jennifer Lawrence having white privilege.

That said, Tumblrites are often teenagers so I guess they unconsciously target what annoys them more. And sometimes a celebrity scandal reveals important prejudices, like the Woodie Allen thing.
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
i think also it's because tumblr is very much fandom-oriented, so it tends to be biased towards consideration of entertainment media

To be honest, I think part of it is that a lot of bloggers don't really CARE to choose their battles. They're just using their personal blogging space to complain about whatever annoys them at the moment.

Not that there's anything wrong with that.
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
    true

and often they write only for a small community of followers, and get quoted outside that context as a result of reblogs, too

i was reading a thing recently about the tendency to treat the Internet as a public space (it was about twitter, but the ideas and concerns were equally applicable to tumblr)... i'll find it once i'm home and have access to my browsing history
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
i can't really blame them, although i think gravedancing is poor form

i remember when Thatcher died a lot of people were cracking jokes about that, and honestly after all the pain she caused i think a little amusement wasn't much to ask

admittedly that was in part because the nation was being expected to mourn the awful woman, which isn't the case with Phelps at all

he's hated by just about everyone

he could have used a picture of fred phelps laughing for a reaction image. that might have at least been dryly amusing.
  • We can do anything if we do it together.
I'm amazed at the sight of a teenager thinking they can change the mind of someone older than them with a laughing GIF.

    That is some incredible hubris.
  • firstly it's a jpeg and secondly i dont think they were trying to change anyone's mind
  • We can do anything if we do it together.
    True enough.

The situation still makes me chuckle, though.
