It's about re-appropriating slurs, really, and who can and cannot use them with whom with whose permission. If you were a drag performer back in the day and got called "tranny" and "freak" by ignorant arseholes on a regular basis, calling yourself that and using it as a point of pride to take back what they threw at you made sense. The thing is, a different group called the same name might not see it like that, so you have to be careful about it. Words mean different things to different people in different contexts.
The problem is that these kids know that these words are demeaning, and know that some gay men and women use them to demean trans* people in the same way that straight people abused those drag performers (cis and trans alike), but equate all "guilty" parties and fail to make the proper connections. Saying that it's problematic (in the real sense) is fine, but saying that these people must be bigots is kind of, well, not getting it? And they don't even bother to try to find the context to understand it because they are so stuck in their own bubbles.

Really, one of the weirder things about people on Tumblr objecting to depictions of men in drag is that it seems to reinforce this idea that certain styles of clothing (skirts, stockings, etc.) are inherently gendered, which seems like the kind of idea most of those same people would call bullshit on otherwise.
Tumblr really is a mess of contradictions and misdirected anger, and it all stems from the fact that it's a bunch of teenagers trying to understand ideas that they're not yet emotionally mature enough to really "get", with little knowledge of the history of those ideas, and with no admission on their part that this is the case.

One big reason why I'm always hesitant to unfollow certain people who go overboard with SJW stuff is that they tend to be the same people who get into arguments with actual bigots and watching them deliver a smackdown is so damn satisfying.
Drag queens are kind of a hot button issue within the trans community in general. You'll get those who argue that it makes it easier for transphobes to go "see, men in dresses!", you'll get those arguing that it perpetuates harmful stereotypes, you'll get those who are fine with it, etc.

I was about to flip out about the Jared Leto thing, actually. Like, there's a good point to be made that they didn't cast a transgender actor to play a transgender character, and there are plenty of great ones out there, but I think it's kind of verging on the flip-side to Bret Easton Ellis' infamous comment that a gay man could not play a convincing heterosexual romantic lead. (And Ellis is himself in a long-term relationship with another man, so it's not exactly a "homophobic" issue...)
