Back around 2010, glennmagusharvey (blessed be he) started a thread on TVT called the Trash Heap, expressely for shitposting purposes. It ended up becoming its own little community, and the following year this spinoff forum was created by Anonus.

It was spawned from the very first dedicated wonderposting thread on TVT, which I had created in order to quarantine wonderposting in an effort to keep Fast Eddie from banning this very amusing practice outright.

That said, the community didn't really start coming alive until 2012, when the actions of the mods became so controversial that people started coming here in droves to get away from all the drama.

Sometime around April 2012, we moved from Vanilla's free hosting (which had some limitations and was scheduled to be discontinued) to our own server at Linode.

TVT was having issues with its content with respect to advertising (including getting shut down by Google twice), trolls had descended on the forums looking for "lolcows", and people were asking for things to change and Eddie in particular was being stubborn about it.

I believe there was also a secondary issue regarding how women were portrayed in the Creator/ pages, specifically how many of those pages were "boner notes" or drooling, skeevy paeans.

I remember that too. Something Awful began pointing and laughing, and IJBM members and TVT were going "I don't want Something Awful-senpai to think we're stupid, we wanna be cool too!" despite not knowing how these things work (its like they never went to highschool before).

IJBM was definitely a third side in the war, dissing both TVT and Something Awful, if I recall correctly, though I don't remember whether SA dissed IJBM first or the other way around.

It was an amusing time I guess.

I was rather disturbed by the creepiness once it was pointed out to me (and it's honestly one reason I won't touch All the Tropes now, since part of their mission statement was to retain a lot of what TVT eventually considered objectionable), but I also think SA (or possibly KiwiFarms, considering the source) singling out various "weirdos" for harassment was going too far.

I never found the creepy parts of Tv Tropes (I know they existed, but I was blessed to never actually stumble upon the worst stuff. I mostly kept to a few specific threads).

All I knew was that people on SA were saying all sorts of incredibly harsh stuff about the first place on the internet I ever had friends, and it made me feel quite nervous and self-conscious, and also defensive of the people I considered friends. The only criticism I remember actually being made of me was someone calling me an unfeeling autistic machine, but I was scared that at some point, people at SA would decide that I was a creepy weirdo who deserved extensive documentation and mockery.

HH felt like a less monitored place with many of the same people. It seemed less likely that there would be an Uncyclopedia or ED article compiling all the stupid stuff I said if I posted here. It also seemed less likely that I would run into creepy stuff.

Yeah, I mostly kept to specific threads. For the last few years I was active on TVT, I pretty much only ever checked my thread watchlist, which meant that I only saw threads about certain franchises I was interested in (e.g. Castlevania, Nanoha, etc.) or about certain issues (e.g. US politics thread, the thread about the crazy stuff happening in Crimea and east Ukraine) or certain threads that I kept on my list out of tradition (e.g. the Trash Heap thread), plus a few other threads about various trope improvement/rename/etc. discussions (mainly tropes I felt I had some sort of personal attachment/investment in).

I had already been burned by overinvolvement in TVT policy debates a while back, when I'd spend entire days arguing about the fate of rename proposals and such and I hated it. So basically I didn't want to get invested.

The Watchlist made it really easy to choose what parts of the site you wanted to be exposed to. Almost like making your own forum, from whatever pieces of the TVT Forum you chose.

Threads not on my watchlist might as well not even have existed most of the time.

Yeah, I like to joke that those threads were so bad that even SA decided that they were bad.

I've heard that after a while, there was just a small group of people who kept on posting in them (i.e. digging up embarrassing stuff from tropers just to laugh at them) and basically everyone else didn't have a particularly high opinion of them (or at least what they did).

Good riddance to bad rubbish, of course.

Which, really, was kinda true, but really only in a way akin to how TVT itself could potentially have proven to be a breeding ground for malevolent folks on the Buffista forums when it first started; sure, some probably did do so, but most of the populace wasn't joining with ulterior motives.

I've been in at least one of those several times. Not sure which physical cinema it was. Maybe my former "favorite" theater, Movies 10, which was Cinemark for a long time, then Starplex for a while, and now it's AMC? Might it have been a Cinedigm property somewhere in there? Or maybe the Cinedigm branding was used in addition to Starplex? Or maybe I'm just thinking of another location, like the Regal or the Drexel… Anyway, I don't like Movies 10 so much now that it's AMC because suddenly it's more expensive and more crowded, there's a lot more ads before the feature, and what was the arcade is now a bar.
