I've had 4e on the brain lately. I ended up playing a one-shot at my FLGS on Monday, which was fun even if it ended in a rather predictable TPK (I was a warlord, everyone else was a wizard, I repeatedly brought them back from the brink of death only to see them eaten by pterodactyls, and then a bunch of guys took turns pummeling my comatose body and took my pet as their totem animal). I think I'll be going back on Saturday, with a pyromaniacal pixie this time (which I was simultaneously startled and delighted to discover is apparently a workable character).

I've had a campaign idea on my mind too (I mentioned it a while ago in the megathread). Before I try that, I've been thinking of running a one-shot on IRC or something just to see how it goes. Mostly because ever since I heard of X-Crawl--modern day, magic is real and dungeon crawling is an extreme sport--I've been in love with the basic idea (the specifics of the setting I don't like that much, from what I've seen), and wanted to try a setup like that as a quick silly game. Possibly with a sponsorship from Andrew Hussie available.

Anyway, yeah. I don't know if it's my favorite roleplaying system, but it's certainly the easiest to get a group together to play, and it's responsible for Spelljammer, and Planescape, which will probably always be two of my favorite things.

Why have I not thought of this. This is amazing.

I tried a little 3.5, but I heard that missing AC happens extremely often, and building a bad character at the beginning is extremely easy even with the things you might be "well duh" feats and stats.

And never tried any of the others. Not enough people with books.

I think 4e's a bit better about this. Though it's hard to tell from personal experience--I did play a game with three fairly optimized characters and an unoptimzed one, and I don't know if the latter was ineffective because of his build or because his idea of "scouting" was to get far ahead of the meatshields and taunt as many enemies as he could with the severed body parts of their companions.

It was too amusing to worry too much about it, though.

^^^ If he had a better idea of how to play a Rouge, I think he'd do quite well.

Throwing skulls at wolf-ridding goblins without wearing pants just isn't a great battle plan (note: I'm kinda combining two bad ideas this player has had into one, but it gets the point across).

So how much of your body has to be covered by cloth armor if you decide to equip it?

In 4E, it can be just a bra and panties, or a loincloth, or even socks, allegedly. If flavor doesn't get in the way of game mechanics.

That, and a though of a Paladin in a Plate Armor Banana Hammock is just plain, hilarious.

Viani: cloth doesn't actually give an armor bonus in 4th, it's just something that can be worn by wizards and enchanted to give a bonus. So the amount probably doesn't matter, although by default it's robes and such.

And I don't think anyone could possibly object to something as awesome as a Holy Banana Hammock.
