Honestly "application" was always kind of a dumb word for this, and non-computer people rarely ever used it, preferring the vague "program". (Computer people, on the other hand, frequently used "app" long before that word exploded in popularity.) So there's not much reason to try and preserve it imo.

I can kinda understand getting annoyed at this tbh
Because I've seen this bizarre misunderstanding that "apps" are a new thing
Like when Windows 8 came out, I saw people who were like "I don't want 'apps' on my PC, I want normal programs!!"

I would be ok with people calling me Al while I transition, though once I'm full-time girl I'd like to be Alice

As for "apps", I often still call them "programs". Though some friends I know call them "progs".
(Incidentally, I might describe them as "computer whizzes", or rather, "computer wizards".)
To me, what's confusing is when restaurants advertise "half price apps".
