It depends on the webcomic author, honestly. Some don't like it, others (like Randall Munroe) explicitly encourage it.

Personally whenever I post something here I usually just rehost it on Imgur real quick to be on the safe side.

I wouldn't say it's stupid, since there might be some tracking they can do with hotlinks that they can't do with imgur rehosting, and I guess the latter makes it easier to spread such hotlinking and such, but really I think providing a source link is probably the most important thing to do, so that others can easily find the source.
