  i had a general impression of Rome as 'the bad guys' from reading Asterix but i don't think i ever had a strong opinion on their conquest of Egypt

  I think this was basically my feelings too? I don't remember for sure. Though I mean, Asterix went to Egypt sometimes. I even had an animated adaptation of one of those times on VHS that I was pretty into.

  i remember, he went to help Cleopatra's architect with stuff
  
  (i never saw any of the adaptations, i just read the comics)

  Yeah that's the one. I think that's the only animated one I ever saw, I mostly read the comics. (Though I don't think I actually had that book, but I think I had another one with Cleopatra in it.)
