More Sunless Sea talk: I finally completed some companion quests that didn't end with them leaving or suffering some tragic fate (incidentally, the navigator with the tattoo's quest was totally inspired by Planescape Torment) and it was really satisfying to see them not only survive but get changed portraits and text that made them sound more confident and happy.
Also, holy crap does getting a better engine make all the difference. Like at first I assumed that because it drained fuel in proportion to how much faster it went, it didn't really matter--but then I realized that, besides the obvious savings in supplies/terror, it just cuts down on just waiting around, which makes the game a whole lot smoother.
Also also, the writing in this game is incredible, and I may have to check out Fallen London proper now.
Now that I think about it, I think the Sigil-Ridden was written by a Kickstarter, so he might have actually been based on Planescape

Good, good.
Two dumb and related questions:
1. When you die, do you have to make your new character immediately or can you quit and come back later to do it?
2. So last run, Pages was the stat I put the most effort into leveling up by far--since as far as I can tell there's no crew member who raises pages in exchange for Secrets, I just kept buying Outlandish Artifacts from Khan's Shadow, making Monstrous Almanacs from them, selling the Almanacs to Venderbight, rinse and repeat every time I circumnavigated the globe. If I take the Correspondent legacy I'll start with +9 pages, which is pretty huge considering, but I'll also have the entire map filled out, which obviously makes it a lot harder to get secrets. Worth it?
I do have the Horizon Codex, so it might not be that big a deal to just let it go. I'm getting two legacies, one of them is definitely going to Salvager because it gives me a big bonus to Veils even if I don't get any money out of it. The other ones don't give me any boosts as far as I can tell, but I can at least pick up a crew member or weapon. So I'm leaning no now, because if nothing else it seems like an already filled-out map would make things less fun--but maybe the convenience would outweigh that factor? Hmmm.
2. I've never tried the Correspondent legacy, but I'd save it until you have all of the bonus starting items.
If you have any weapons from Caminus Yards or Irrepressible's prize, I'd suggest Rivals. Picking Shipmate depends on what sidequests you'd really, really rather not do again.
Looks like I'm colonizing Aestival. Although midway through I was thinking about how long it was taking, at which point my mechanic presumably said "Wouldn't this go faster if you had a better engine? Maybe...the BEST engine?" So now I'm doing that.
I also got the Memento Mori, which made hunting lorn-flukes fun and easy (especially with the Lump of Blue Scintillack, oh man).
That let me do the Principle of Coral's whole quest line, which was awesome. Poor ancient alien entity just wants to die after being ripped out of its home world by the Bazaar. Sorry you had to go with it, nacreousOutcast.
Also, after realizing I had given the apes the necessary tools to come and take over my colony any time they wanted, I blew up their zeppelin.
It was really gratifying for some reason. Probably because those apes are jerks. I think my next run might be dedicated to doing nothing but building the zeppelin as fast as I can just so I can hijack it.
So I finally won! Colonized Aestival, allied with London. Wanted to go it alone, but then I realized I didn't want to end my game with, not even a coin flip, but a dice roll. The ending sequence was still very satisfying, though. No, I'm not a dominion. No, I will not rule in her majesty's name. I'm an independent country, dammit. I carried everyone here on a yacht I got from a mummy.
I just came in here to post that I had just successfully hijacked the Zeppelin.
I'm really disappointed that blowing up London to curry favor with the monkey king in order to stab him in the back and steal his zeppelin doesn't count as a win. How is that not a win?
Oh well. May not have gotten the "complete the entire game without choosing a past" victory, but I do have all five legacy items now. (Unless there's a hidden one that gives +5 to all stats or something, which I would not put past this game.)
The other highlight of this run was trying my last game's successful logic of "wouldn't it be easier to do all this sailing back and forth if you had a super engine" with the Genial Magician. But then he came back acting suspicious, so I killed and ate him, because what are friends for. It was at that point that I said "ok, screw getting anything else done this run, let's just steal the damn ape blimp". So I did.
So I did Blemmigan Propogation this last run and was kind of disappointed that the islands affected were still like...usable at all. I wanted to see my enemies brought to absolute ruination, hear about chaos every time I visited. But it was not to be.
It was pretty funny when I put one on Kingeater Castle and it just took two steps off the boat and died for no reason. I guess I shouldn't have expected anything else really.
I just did the Carnelian Exile's whole story line, and holy crap.
I mean, I've got a lot more to say about it, but--holy crap. It's so good I can almost forgive the fact that there's literally no clue what you're supposed to be doing besides "go off each side of the map". (I also have the sneaking suspicion that when I wake up in the morning, I'll think about it and go "wait, that didn't make any sense" but it really had an effect on me in the moment, and that's what counts.)
Getting the Fulgent Impeller and the Eschaton-class Dreadnaught was, literally, too much fun. I didn't want to actually slow down and do anything, I just wanted to keep zooming around the seas in the biggest ship, flipping off the Tree of Ages and Eater of Names. (Sure, I had beaten both of those in the corvette in the previous game, but it wasn't the same.)
I tried to find Mt Nomad to flip her off too, but I didn't see her in any of the usual places. Maybe I should've just bought that item that summons her.
Speaking of which, just won with Your Father's Bones as a Street Urchin, which I think is the first one I ever tried. Considering the previous victorious runthrough as a poet was just "yep, turns out your dad's bones got lost in the mail" I really didn't see the ending of this one coming.
I like the variations in each of the Your Father's Bones stories I've done so far.
Poet: ancient immortal beings sent your dead dad's bones through the post for some reason
Veteran: your dead dad's bones are in a big heap of all these other bones
Street urchin: your dead dad wasn't human, instead of burying him you can slough off your skin and jump into the ocean to be worshipped as a god by the lesser sea creatures
Natural philosopher: your dead dad is not dead, he offers you some random guy's bones instead but you can just drag him back to London
Fallen priest: your dead dad was the best cannibal.
Apparently this has a different ending if your Unaccountably Peckish is 0, but where's the fun in that?
Also I really want to know the release date for Zubmariner. I might do a "set up" run where I grab the Impeller and the Memento Mori before Zubmariner comes out so I'm 100% prepared, although I'm not sure whether that's in the spirit of it or not. (My current captain started with 100+ Veils and Mirrors and 70k+ echoes, I haven't even taken him out of port because I feel like I've done everything already but setting up for Z might be a worthy cause/excuse to play some more. But maybe it's best if I go for like...a week without touching this game.)
So I finally got in on Fallen London itself. Aegisaglow on there. Maybe I should have chosen an actual name instead of my generic username? But I dunno, it kinda fits for a bandaged individual who's heard whispers of "the Correspondence" and who wants to become a scholar of it.
Of course, right now I'm just running around Ladybones investigating crimes and such.
Also, looking back, the marriage options in FL are honestly kind of limited.
You have a choice between girl, boy and, if you're willing to spend a small real-life fortune like I did, squid. Three options is a bit lacking, especially considering how much that last one costs.
Oh man, I really lucked out with Opportunity cards.
Earlier I got a survey which gave me six free fate and some coffee that would restore ten actions. I figured I'd just hold onto both forever.
Just now, I got a card that gave me +30 to Persuasive for an hour. That immediately unlocked something that boosted my Persuasive by 10 points permanently, let me get past a few hurdles in that ambition, and unlocked a couple of new storylines in Veilgarden.
I feel like I just stumbled on this game's version of the warp pipe.

Either way, I have officially driven the academic Mad in the process, so I hope whatever I'm doing is worth it.

So now I just need to spend my actions gathering Smiles, I guess. Hope you like coffee, friends. I don't think I got it. Lost in the post?
