It's interesting to me that Dell laptop keyboard produce consistent results; they seem like the kind of company that would just go with whatever keyboard supplier is the cheapest at any given moment...
Laptop keyboards work a little differently; frequently, the keyboard scanner is inside the ACPI EC and not a separate chip inside the keyboard, so two laptops with the same brand/type of ACPI EC may have the same results. (Old PowerBooks did it this way, too.)
This doesn't apply to laptops with USB keyboards like MacBooks, since they use the same setup as an external USB keyboard.
