Good, very good. This I'm very excited for.

anyway the best part of pluto is hannibalbot.

    Agreed.
  • My dreams exceed my real life
Apparently the Pluto adaptation is slated for 2020 and will be made up of 8 long episodes, one for each volume of the manga. Urasawa is supervising and some staff from Monster and Keaton are involved.

    Indeed. It's all very picaresque.

I was expecting worse with Fred Luo but I actually wasn't particularly taken aback. Aisha is good, though.

    “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”

This should probably go in the internet critic thread but whatever. It's just a nice little piece about loving a work of art.
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
First two episodes of Beast Player Erin were supremely charming, and then the third mugged me with feels. Still great, highly invested, knew this was coming, but I still feel sad.

    Aaaaaaaa, this show is hitting all my feelings and it's like Natsume Yuujinchou all over again. ;_____;

I've not jumped on board with this because it has 50 episodes -_-
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
That seems long but it's actually not that much of a time commitment in the long run.

Apparently one of the design consultants on RahXephon was a legit science writer with an interest in giant arthropods, as well as an animation director on Gene Diver, a show apparently quite popular with Japanese proto-furries back in the '90s.
  • Oh I was always interested in Gene Diver. Unfortunately I don't think it was ever fully subbed.

    18if has a cool cover

centaur holy shit! i totally missed that was getting an anime, awesome. finally liberal fascists will have representation in anime (this is facetious, it's a good comic)

clione no akari sounds cool from the description

dive!! is like, straight up free!, right? i mean.

i don't do fate but man "Yggdmillennia family"

made in abyss, well, obviously. every time a chapter comes out i suppress the urge to post spoilers here

    fuuuuuckin owarimonogatari

princess principle sounds... like it could be interesting? or at least violent

tsurezure children is A Good Comic. what do you mean the format, just lots of stories?

    black general lol
  • Princess Principle is by 3Hz aka "The Flip-Flappers Guys" so I'm expecting great things.

tsurezure children is A Good Comic. what do you mean the format, just lots of stories?

I actually thought it was something else, not realizing it's an adaptation of a manga I like a lot. So I'm still excited just for different reasons.

    black general lol

hey fuck u Black General is great
  • kill living beings
black general is great, because it's lol.

actually if people haven't heard of centaur: it's "monster girls" and "cute girls doing cute things" but instead of porn it's (in large part) about racial politics, all metaphor-like. which is pretty weird for anything japanese.

this isn't a typical page, but it demonstrates that much
    Spoiler:
    image
  • one of the reasons I'm not terribly excited for the Centaur anime is that I'm almost positive like 90% of that will be scrubbed out
  • kill living beings
ah but you see, it's japanese, not american, and the racial situation in centaurese japan isn't anything like that of the real japan
  • yeah but they're still marketing it as a Cute Stuff show so idk
  • My brother basically sat me down in front of our Fire Stick and made me watch Twin Star Exorcists. It's pretty much your standard shonen stuff, but I think it's done pretty well from the bits I've seen of it (first four episodes or so)

also, I'm considering starting Nichijou just because I watched a YouTube video about its sense of humor and it seems like something I'd enjoy

This show made me irrationally angry and I still haven't watched the last two episodes.

It's probably not actually completely terrible, just, yeah, standard shonen stuff, but it's definitely a mess for various reasons. Anime stops adapting the manga like halfway through and everything from then on is very inconsistent in quality (some of it is good, but also lots of it is not) and no particular effort is made to make the anime original stuff fit in with anything from the first 20ish episodes.

Though what I've heard about the manga also sounds pretty unappealing to me so something.
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
Nichijou is extremely satisfying in small, controlled doses.
  • nah it's extremely satisfying always cuz it's GOAT
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
I can't marathon it, personally. It's not Teekyu or Ai Mai Mii levels of zany, but a lot happens! A lot!

It is great, though. I'm not disputing that. Easily one of the funniest shows I know. It's just a bit much in large quantities.
  • kill living beings

    Nichijou is very good

    good anime.
  • Munch munch, chomp chomp...
Actually it's only Super Extremely Good, you twits.
  • I always feel like there must be something deeply wrong with me, because I watched a whole load of clips of Nichijou a while back and none of them did anything for me at all. They just weren't funny.

I guess it's been long enough that maybe I'd feel differently now, idk.
  • what's wrong with you is that you don't like Nichijou

    :thunking:

Anyway as for the animes: Ballroom e Yousoko because I read and enjoyed some of the manga, and am a sucker for the drams. Same character designer as DRRR!! too.

Centaur because obviously. I'll read the manga after the anime in this case.

I will probably check out an episode of Gamers! because of that cute girl on the cover. I will probably also check out S4E1 of Hell Girl because.

Will be watching Kakegurui. Like the manga, anime looks good, looks to be maybe at least halfway capturing the manga's feel too, and I like the script writer.

Made in Abyss is a lock, naturally. New Game!! a potential lock. NTR is currently wavering between "definitely a lock" and "not at all a lock" purely due to it being a short, so I might just marathon it later. I will definitely be checking out Mary to Majo no Anne and Kimi no Koe wo Todoketai, and of course the Pokemon movie. Black General, I'll catch that later.
  • kill living beings
NTR was porn, right? it looks like porn. except for being on this listing, i guess

    Munch munch, chomp chomp...
Not sure if it's straight porn, probably just ecchi-like since it's not labeled Hentai or anything.

Anyway I am actually definitely going to watch it.

And I mean, it's not, like, Sin, now that is definitely softcore.

... man, was All Purpose Cultural Cat Girl Nuku Nuku like anything other than a late 90s meme show? I was reminded of it today, and I swear, back then I only ever heard people joke about it, inside and outside of the fandom. Only ever met one non-critic person who has so much as noted its existence, too.
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
I know of it but have never seen it.
  • Munch munch, chomp chomp...
I kinda want to check it out later on.
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
    Same.
  • All I know is that the title is fun to say out loud and also I think the catgirl is a cyborg or something??
  • She's a robot girl with the brain of a cat.

    > apparently there is now going to be a diving series since there was a swimming series already

    > symphogear has a fourth season wtf

    > two series named isekai something lol

    > fashion plutocracy school?
  • why do i get the feeling that the cute girl characters these days look younger than they usually did in the '00s

Reminder that Hajimete no Gal is premiering in 11 days, for 10 episodes and an OVA, for those who care (which I guess are just Cerise and Jane probably?). Forget where it's streaming though.

Have you guys ever watched an anime out of pity?

Not quite but I have watched an anime series because I got curious due to the amount of flak that others gave it.

    More than once.

The results were worth it in my opinion.
  • so Kakegurui.

Incredibly goofy. You know that one tumblr comic that's a Yugioh parody but with Uno? That's this, except it's various trad. card and board games (in the premiere episode they play card roshambo) and a 'Guitary level of weird implied eroticism. Also there are a ton of grotesque closeup face shots. It's a strange combination. Also all of the characters are impossible to sympathize with because they're a bunch of spoiled rich children, so I don't think it'll really be something you watch for the characters in that way. It's pretty damn over the top, is what I'm getting at. Odd little show, curious to see where it goes though if the wait between episodes gets too much at some point I might end up just reading the manga instead.

Some other minor notes. The sound design is really good, and the fucking eyes, jesus christ.
  • Knight's & Magic! Oooh this is an interesting little beast.

First of all yeah it's an isekai. It's a played-out genre I know and even in this case I kinda feel like that particular element is tacked on (it's mostly used to justify the main character's absurd overcompetence) but the rest of the show I'm honestly pretty impressed. I went in with very low expectations, and while I was spot on with some things (it's a fantasy mecha show in the same vein as The Vision of Escaflowne (or the double-fictional Vogelchevalier from re:CREATORS, and the mechs the fantastical demon creatures they fight are both CGI.), others really surprised me (it's a little stiff but surprisingly well done for the most part. Time will tell if that holds up as the show goes on). The visual design in general is just really nice, especially when it comes to magic which is presented as this sort of nebulous color-wash of geometric abstract power, often with little glyphs and runes actually *flying off of* the attacks as they're unleashed. It's a small touch but I like it.

Our main character is Ernie, who was a programmer from our world in a past life and also a mecha otaku. Somehow this makes him really great at magic (this show is not the sort that prioritizes logical explanations), he is a total femboy and is the most huggable character I've encountered so far this season. The isekai elements make him a little harder to fully love than I'd like because there is, in the back of my mind at least, that little niggling "this kid is actually an adult in a teenager's body", but so far it's been presented more as him having kind of a lingering memory of his mecha and programming obsessions more than anything else. It's a fairly typical set up for the genre but it's not overemphasized here I don't think and depending on how they play it I might even come to like it.

My main complaints so far is that the pacing even within just the first episode is odd. Quite a lot of ground is covered and we're introduced to over a dozen characters, so aside from Ernie himself (and his two love interests if my anime romance radar is working, they're sisters by the way) it's a bit hard to follow.

It's definitely not a terribly highbrow show but if you're looking for action and general cheesiness I think you could do a lot worse than this. I'm excited to see where it goes from here. This is a definite follow for me.
