Section Reads Sandman

At last I am finally reading Sandman.

I know a bunch of you have been waiting for me to read the series, so this thread seems like the easiest way for me to share my thoughts on it.

I'm probably going to post my thoughts in free-form ala Sredni's Homestuck thread.

  • We can do anything if we do it together.
First off, I have to say that this 1980s artstyle will take me some time to get used to.
  • We can do anything if we do it together.
It's also oddly appropriate for me to be reading this after all the different versions of Alice in Wonderland that we watched in Myr's stream.
  • We can do anything if we do it together.
Neat homage to the original Sandman.
  • We can do anything if we do it together.
First issue finished. I am intrigued.
  • My dreams exceed my real life
    First issue or first volume?
  • We can do anything if we do it together.
    First issue.
  • We can do anything if we do it together.
Time to cuddle up with issue #2 before bed.
  • We can do anything if we do it together.
I think that I'm one of the few people who knew about Cain and Abel before I read Sandman.
  • We can do anything if we do it together.
Okay, I didn't know about Doctor Destiny before now.
  • You never watched Justice League?

Also the note how the comic panels are used - they're as much a part of the art as the words or the drawings. Think of it like cinematography for comics. You'll see what I mean when the Corinthian shows up.

    Actually, not really. >_>

    I've already been noting that.

I really like the way the panels flow.
  • We can do anything if we do it together.
Anyway, I'm done with Issue #2.

I really liked the way Issue #1 told a complete story within itself, and it's a bit of a shame that this is already straying from that.

I'm still intrigued enough to press forward, though.

Now for Issue #3, again before bed.
  • We can do anything if we do it together.
    Is Constantine worth reading?
  • We can do anything if we do it together.
I've finished issue #3. Still fairly intriguing.
  • We can do anything if we do it together.
I've read through issues #4 and #5 now.

I looked up who "Scott Free" was and apparently he's Mister Miracle.

I need to keep this character in mind. He seems like my kind of thing.
  • My dreams exceed my real life
There are little references to corners of the DC universe like that from time to time.
  • We can do anything if we do it together.
    I'm aware.

    I really dig them.
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
The art actually changes up quite a bit, as does the arc structure. It all gets very interesting by the end.
  • My dreams exceed my real life
Have you gotten to Dr. Destiny yet?
  • We can do anything if we do it together.
I've gotten up to the point where he reclaims his ruby, yeah.
  • We can do anything if we do it together.
Man, issue #6 was pretty chilling.

I admit I am unsure about the implication of Donna being raped straight, but I feel like Gaiman meant for that to be uncomfortable.
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
    i forgot about that part

i do remember that issue being extremely nasty
  • My dreams exceed my real life
I'm not sure how many DC writers have used Dr. Destiny after Gaiman.

He shows up on the Justice League cartoon, and there's a short but unsettling bit with him in Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth, but that's it, as far as I know.

It occurs to me that with the recent folding of Sandman into the DC Universe, Doctor Destiny's fate in that comic is now canon.

That's the kind of thing I would usually be against, but Gaiman didn't know that would happen when he used him, so...
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
^^ Morrison's comic predates Gaiman's, doesn't it? Both are connected by Dave McKean, in any case. And one of the Materioptikons had a cameo in Doom Patrol later.

^ Honestly, he's a great, disturbing villain in Gaiman's story, so you could do worse.

Sandman debuted two months after Arkham
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
OK, so I was getting my chronology right. Good.

    Hmmmm.

Yeah, not much to add there.
  • We can do anything if we do it together.
    I've finished issue #7.

I think my reservations about Doctor Destiny are gone. I like how Dream took pity on him in the end.

We can do anything if we do it together.
I have finished issue #8, and along with it the first volume.

I was waiting for Death, and she is indeed pretty awesome. I also like how she's one of the few characters who speaks in regular comic lettering.

Speaking of which, Todd Klein's work on Sandman is simply amazing and I think Anonus would appreciate it.
  • We can do anything if we do it together.
Did you really think I had forgotten about this?

I shall begin the second volume today.
  • My dreams exceed my real life
    That one is my favorite.

That one, and the 4th one
  • We can do anything if we do it together.
    Even Gaiman's recaps are entertaining.
  • We can do anything if we do it together.
Issue #9 is rather similar to Issue #1 in both overall themes and being a self-contained story. I wonder if it's going to lead into the actual story of this volume like Issue #1 did to the first volume.
  • We can do anything if we do it together.
I've gone up to Issue #11 now.

I'm really liking how these issues are paced.
  • We can do anything if we do it together.
    I have finished Issue #12.

I didn't know about the Simon/Kirby Sandman before now. I admit that I find the idea pretty interesting on its own, and suspect the claims of it being too "juvenile" that Wikipedia mentions just overblown cries by capeshitters, but I still really dig how he was plugged into the metafictional world of this comic nonetheless.

We can do anything if we do it together.
    I have read Issue #13.

I like how no value judgement is inherently placed on Hob's decision to live forever.
  • We can do anything if we do it together.
I have now finished the second volume.

I have to admit that Ken and Barbie was maybe too obvious for me, but they're a minor element in the story, so...
  • We can do anything if we do it together.
I'm also not entirely understanding of some aspects of the story so far, but I'm sure it will clear up in time.
  • My dreams exceed my real life
    What exactly don't you understand?
  • We can do anything if we do it together.
... Actually, it's clicking for me the more I think about it.

Desire raped Unity and gave her the amulet, didn't he?
  • We can do anything if we do it together.
I'll be reading the third volume tonight.

It's a collection of standalone stories, apparently. I've enjoyed the standalone stories the most in Sandman so far, so I think that I'll like this volume.

We can do anything if we do it together.
Actually, come to think of it, issue #14 isn't really standalone but I really enjoyed the sheer trippiness of that issue anyway.

I'll have to think on this later. For now, let's read.
  • We can do anything if we do it together.
Could someone explain the concept of the nine muses to me?

This is interesting, but I don't know the full mythological underpinnings behind them.
  • We can do anything if we do it together.
"Let's make two and a half minutes of squelching noises."

I giggled at that line. I get the feeling I was supposed to.
  • My dreams exceed my real life
They are nine minor deities who inspire and represent various forms of art. Old poets used to ceremonially begin their poems with invocations to the Muses in the hopes that they would inspire them, as in the Odyssey for instance
"Sing to me of the man, Muse, the man of twists and turns
driven time and again off course, once he had plundered
    the hallowed heights of Troy."

Basically what people are referring to when they refer to someone or something as "My Muse"
  • We can do anything if we do it together.
    Thanks. Interesting.
  • We can do anything if we do it together.
"A man who inherits a library card to the library in Alexandria."

I'd be legit interested in reading this story.
  • We can do anything if we do it together.
Issue #17 was almost a Twilight Zone story.

I get the feeling Todd Klein was the one who added the old-school promo line for issue #18 at the end of the last page. Again, I like how he does things like that.
  • We can do anything if we do it together.
    I like Dream's morphing abilities.
