British Twitter Marxists vs American Twitter Marxists

American Twitter Marxists: Sometimes write blogposts about how America is a bloody imperialist monster-nation built on a foundation of brutal slavery and genocide, run by mad fascist dictators, with a media that would make Leni Riefenstahl blush.

British Twitter Marxists: Will express ten times more personal bloody-minded hatred and loathing for their home country than the above party does for theirs while writing a blogpost about that cafe that only serves cereal.

    well you see

the average American believes that America is, for whatever faults it may have, a good country and a nice place to live, enough that they wouldn't want to live anywhere else, while the average Briton believes that Britain is sort of crap really

so if British Twitter Marxists were merely to express a measured amount of hatred for the UK, proportionate to the ostensible subject at hand, one might mistake them for ordinary Britons with only mild disdain for their country, as opposed to Twitter Marxists.  In order to convey the fact that their criticisms are important and seriously intended, they overcompensate.

  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
There is a really nasty authoritarian streak in certain schools of ostensibly democratically-oriented Marxist thought, particularly in the context of English socialism. Labour's "Militant" faction typified this back in the day, being rabidly anti-capitalist and anti-racist but also fairly sexist and impressively homophobic, but that kind of humourless, self-righteous, creepy-snobby puritanical line still exists and is pretty strong in some Trotskyite circles over there.
  • which is ridiculous, we all know that the entire reason Trotsky was a good communist was because of his moustache
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
Trotsky was honestly pretty cool insofar as Russian revolutionaries went, but if I were to align myself with any major left-wing political theorist, I would go with Kropotkin. He just seemed like such a gentle man, and his theories reflect that.
  • what's a marxist's favorite snack?

Oh, then they're tankies? Then they're already armchair fascists in different colours.
