That bit with them freeing the alien horses is (according to Roachpatrol at least) a quintessentially female power fantasy. So it left a lot of dudes confused that they weren't being pandered to.
It's an essential scene in a subplot that ends with the involved characters failing, completely. General audiences don't like downer endings like that.
Part of that scene's "message" was that the Resistance, by buying weapons and vehicles from the same people who also supplied the First Order, were unknowingly perpetuating the cycle of violence. That, as long as they lined the pockets of the people who helped the First Order come into power, some other evil group would take the First Order's place once this war was over. Except the argument in the film was a bit awkwardly worded, so a lot of people came away thinking that the movie said "The Resistance is just as bad as the First Order, because they happen to buy weapons from the same people"—a ridiculous oversimplification that would deserve mockery if the film actually said that.

Wait, how is that a "quintessentially female power fantasy"?
Isn't freeing animals abused for sport and thereby defying powerful but corrupt people who exploit them, kinda gender-neutral?
It's not as though the Resistance can supply itself. How are they supposed to get ships and weapons and tech, given that all their allies are dead or otherwise unavailable*? I mean, if you're going to do the whole "secret conspiracy against your powerful enemies" thing, it helps when you (a) have a couple decades to set things up and (b) are not actively on the run. (see: The secret Sith plot to get rid of the Jedi and destroy the Republic, and the secret Jedi plot to get rid of the Sith and destroy the Empire).

Also, reading all that has me remaining convinced that a lot of these people just do not get Star Wars, at all
