Full House

Due to my sudden fixation on TGIF I've been reading this blog, and decided we needed a thread for this show.

Even just watching clips of it tells you what a weird, creepy simulacrum of a sitcom this show is. It does Family Circus-type humor FAR less effectively or endearingly (yes, I am actually defending that comic because Bil Keane was a pretty boss artist, it's one of those dinosaur strips whose art hasn't deteriorated, and I think its cutesy brand of humor has a place in the world), and the production values are chintzy. One wonders why Lorimar-Telepictures cheaped out on this show when their other sitcom Perfect Strangers seems to have decent production values.

  • THIS MACHINE KILLS FASCISTS
My guess there is "one of the ABC executives loved it and wouldn't shut up about it", more-or-less the same reason we got Pinky, Elmyra and The Brain.

Sums up how I think about the show, that WDW episode in particular is trash

You are the end result of a “would you push the button” prompt where the prompt was “you have unlimited godlike powers but you appear to all and sundry to be an impetuous child” – Zero, 2022
I liked it as a little girl because it was about little girls.

...that's about the only positive thing I can say about the show.
  • THIS MACHINE KILLS FASCISTS
I actually thought it was funny when I was, like, 10. I also think I might have had a teeny bit of a crush on DJ, though I didn't really like girls yet.
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
I'm not even a fan of Bob Saget's comedy and I still would rather watch a Bob Saget set than the equivalent quantity of this show. It's not even like it's painfully awful so much at is just really, really banal.
  • Munch munch, chomp chomp...
I grew to like it as a child because I ended up watching so much of it, simply due to it being on and my sometimes passive nature towards early media with the family.

I... think I would appreciate it now, but for entirely different reasons. And I think the OP just about sums it up, even if not broaching what that means to me.
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
To be fair, Neil Cicierega's re-appropriation of the opening theme throughout the two "Mouth" albums is pretty amusing even without taking into account its source. It's a delicious hunk of cheese.
  • Know your lines? Of course you know your lines! But I don't want to just hear your lines...I wanna hear what's in YOUR SOULS!!
All I remember about the show was "oh hey it's the America's Funniest Home Videos guy" and that's it.
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
Who was also one of the filthiest comedians alive. Or is.

Who was also one of the filthiest comedians alive. Or is.

I dunno what his comedy routines were like before FH and AFHV, but it's fun to imagine he simply snapped from having to be super squeaky clean "family-friendly" for 10 years.
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
He always had a remarkably depraved sense of humour, but I think his act did get more extreme as a release valve to deal with not being able to let loose during his day job.

Apparently he's also really nice to up and coming comedians and backstage people, or so I have heard. Which is unsurprising. Nice people with truly alarming ideas of what is funny are not in short supply.
  • I knew a dude in high school who used "Bob Saget" as an exclamation.

This is completely fucking irrelevant, but so is everything that anyone has ever said to anyone else. We must embrace this semantic soup of chaos, or be lost in it.
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
Bob Saget's Ghost (who may be neither of those things) is a major character in Asscastle, which is a really, really weird comic.
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
...I should totally have a Bob Saget's Ghost sockpuppet.

could anything called "Asscastle" possibly not be weird

    True, true.

It's worth a read, although as far as the artist's early work goes, smokes. is probably better, although rather than funny that one... ends on a really depressing note, so maybe when you're prepared for it.

    I should read it, perhaps

Holy shit that stuffed Bugs is creepy

I don't know if Billy Superstar noticed, but when WB bought Lorimar, the references to Looney Tunes and Batman and such went way up.

Yup, Cate Wurtz/Partydog. I think it's their second earliest project still available on the Internet, and the better part of ffff might not even be up anymore so it may just be the oldest.

i don't think so.  Sounds more like he's just saying the character's voice is silly?

(idk what Jesse actually sounds like but a character in a live action show who talked like Bullwinkle would be pretty weird i think)

It's actually meant literally, oddly enough. One of the "impressions" Joey does a lot on the show is a Bullwinkle voice, and it gets grating as hell after a while.
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”

    Well, I read Asscastle

    That was certainly something

I've read some interesting analysis of it as a kind of extended metaphor for coming into one's own sexually as a queer person, and that definitely holds water, but the presentation is not everyone's cup of tea. Her later stuff is way more accessible in some respects, despite being just as weird, maybe because the storytelling is less, well, pornographic in structure.

The main character's design is really pretty cute, though.
  • My dreams exceed my real life
Say what you will about Joey, he did have Alanis Morissette go down on him in a theater once.
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
    ...whaaaaa...
  • My dreams exceed my real life

    ...whaaaaa...

This song is basically confirmed to be about her relationship with Dave Coulier, the actor who played Joey

    Oh yeah, that.

    I forgot that lyric.

    That makes sense.

Still, probably not a specific slight against Bullwinkle, i would think, so much as the impressions being irritating.
  • "Oh, man, I can’t even tell you how fucking long I’ve been waiting for this one. It’s like the one bright spot in an otherwise endless void of shitty garbage. I think I’ve mentioned this before, but I actually wanted to write a Family Matters Reviewed blog originally, but I ended up not doing it because the show never had a proper DVD release. I think that’s because it switched networks late in the shows life, so the rights are all fucked."

Why would they be all fucked? WB owns Family Matters completely, neither ABC nor CBS ever owned the tiniest sliver of it.
  • God, even now, only the first four seasons of Family Matters are on DVD. This is the only official way to get to the original broadcast versions, not the edited-for-syndication versions.
