Either way people are always going "I AM PLANNING ON MAKING A GAME BUT SINCE I AM NOT A DEVELOPER YET, HAVE NO SKILLS IN PROGRAMMING, SUCK AT MAKING MODELS, CAN'T DRAW SPRITES AND HAVE ISSUES WITH HIRING PEOPLE TO DO THINGS FOR ME" I have decided to make a thread so we can like...discuss our WIP games.

Because I KNOW, I SO KNOW you have text files and notebooks with little lists of your vidjagame stuff written into it.

You list the weapons, or the attacks, or the abilities, or the characters, or the ideas for where the game will go, and all that jazz.

This is exactly the thread I need to talk about the project I've never gotten around to starting yet. Especially since now I don't have to doublepost bump my old thread yet.

The only thing I've gotten down is the story's basic premise and a few ideas of what gameplay I'd like. To sort-of copypaste from the old thread, the player character is a young dragon whose parents died protecting a fantasy town full of humans. An organization of human and dragon magicians in the town who devote themselves to research and community service was founded in their honor. Your main goal is to join this organization, make a good circle of friends in it, and find out a little more about what your parents did.

If I made it into a video game, I'd be tempted to openly copy the gameplay of Megaman Battle Network, with battles taking place on the same 3x6 space grid and spells taking the place of BattleChips. I'd also do something similar to Style Changes from the 2nd and 3rd games, with elemental dragonbreath powerups that you get by using certain spells or tactics a lot.

Sorry if that was a lot to swallow. I don't have much yet, but I bet I can think of some more.

^^Aww. That's unfortunate. Battle Network's my favorite Megaman.

Though the game in my head seems to be equally as Visual Novel-y as it is like an RPG, so there's be more to do besides that.

What exactly did you not like about it, just out of curiosity?

I can really not get any more specific than "I found it boring as shit".

As for games, I've wanted to make a little indie RPGMaker title for a long time, but I can't figure out how to use the damn thing.

I don't know if this would help, but maybe if the battlefield was bigger than 3x6, it would be more interesting? Also, since it's a different setting, it wouldn't all look like walking on floating panels in the middle of space.

Oh well, I can always refine that later if I actually make this. To be honest, the only reason Megaman Battle Network came up is because I've been watching Let's Plays of it and my idea of learning different elemental breath attacks sounded a little like Style Changes. The stat mechanics were a little closer to Fire Emblem.

Speaking of elemental breath, the four types I've thought of so far are fire, lightning, steam, and ice. I'm wondering if there could be others possible, like poison breath. I know there's acid as a possibility, but I'm not sure I'd like that.

Hmmm. What would the different breath attacks look like?

I would imagine that fire would be a short range flamethrower...

Lightning would probably shoot instantaneously, but there's a second or two beforehand where the panels flash to show where it's going to hit...

Would ice be the long range breath option? Fires multiple ice shards?

Or am I just thinking about this too much?

I had an idea on making a cross between Advance Wars, Pokemon, and Disgaea.

I was trying to make an Elder Scrolls tabletop game at one point, and I even got half of a completed version out the door. But I gave up eventually, and in retrospect, what I released didn't fit with the original games all that well.

I have a couple of ideas for how the friends you make in the dragon RPG can give you helpful bonuses. For example, here are two sample characters I made to illustrate this (though one of them is basically myself with a different name). How does this look?

Noah

A student magician who joined the dragon-wizard alliance a year ago. He's shy but polite, and he loves animals. He can often be seen taking short walks in the forested path just outside of town. He's made friends with one of the assistant researchers, Keela.

Provides Bonuses to: Magic Power, Lightning elemental attacks

Can help teach advanced lightning breath techniques

Keela

A dragon cursed into the body of a boa constrictor. He's calm, careful, and often willing to share advice to those who ask. He works as an assistant to the researchers of the dragon-wizard alliance. He's also a personal friend of Noah's and enjoys visiting him when he's off-duty.

Provides Bonuses to: Magic Resistance, Water elemental attacks

Can help teach advanced steam breath techniques
