  • Unless they've changed the EDH rules without me noticing again, you can't play signets or Figure of Destiny with a mono-white commander.
  • AHh okay, thankyou, i was just considering fixing and things that have white, so i guess no kitchen finks also
  • This thread hasn't been very active, huh?

I am back in Toronto and thus open to EDH over the coming days.
  • image Wee yea erra chs hymmnos mea.
Is she related to Niv-Mizzet, Vampire Cops?
  • edited 2016-08-10 18:20:13

Niv-Mizzet, Vampire Cops will be in Conspiracy 3: Ghost Marchesa vs. Democracy Boogaloo

anyways i love Kaya's design, instead of ticking up she flickers herself to reset her loyalty counters, and she can flicker other things too with that ability!!! v rad
  • She's pretty cool and I want to try her out in EDH. I guess the obvious place would be in a white/black lifegain deck of some kind.

ps she is also very cute
  • janky deck idea from reddit: flicker her every turn to abuse the Oaths

    so

    leovold

i didn't realize how utterly busted he was

    and now i know

also, will be building something with new grenzo
  • now that im finally off mobile

    ARE YOU READY FOR

    image

    BOROS CARD ADVANTAGE COMMANDER
  • image

    "deals 50 damage"
  • Splat Charger Specialist
...That first ability would be deadly in some sort of EDH storm deck.
  • did the math, in a game where you start at 20, in order to whack your opponent with this you need to cast 8 spells in one turn (9 if you've taken more than 6 by that time)

    storm in standard
  • I just got into Magic!
  • Living tissue over endoskeleton.

    image

    "deals 50 damage"

Ramp to 10 and cast Feed the Horde five times. Easy.

yeah, in the same fashion as zendikar expeditions. That'll be a permanent thing from here on out.
  • Cherry is always around when the Magic thread is active .u.

Or, in other words, eff this one player in particular. Does what it needs to do, and since it has white and haste, you can blink it as necessary to retarget if, say, you realize that someone's going to win next turn if you don't kill them right effing now.

Also, it makes me very sad that blue's the exiled color for this. A Mirror Gallery and a bunch of Clone variants would cause such fun
    image
Oh hey, MTG finally made a gay card. Cool, cool.

This is interesting. Lacks the usual 'make the opponent draw so much that they beg for it to stop' aspects that usually dominate Phelddagriff-type decks. Restrained enough that people won't try to kill it, especially with that 2/8 (there's a joke in there somewhere, but this is a SWF thread), speeds up the game without causing it to dissolve, and still provides you with slightly more advantage than anybody else. This may actually be the perfect Commander to represent the ideal state of the game. Even if it is a bit dull.

    image
Well. That is certainly some art. Seems like something @Fossilmaiden might like

So, that's a cheaper and weaker version of Bosh, emergency life gain in a pinch or if you need to use some Black life drain abilities, and an easy way to kill literally anything in the game with enough artifacts and Glaring Spotlight, and she comes with ammo. Versatile, interesting, and punchy. I approve of sexy metal druid girl

    image
That is a scary combination of keywords.

Proliferate is a fun mechanic, provided that you're not playing infect, and I like that she's going with a less flashy but consistent and free effect over, say, Vorel's ability, which is much, much more impressive, but forces you to have 2 mana free every single turn to get the most out of it. Not exactly a breath of fresh air, but interesting enough if you want to take another shot at Simic mechanics
    image
    OH GOD WHAT IS THAT

AAAAAAAAH, KILL IT KILL IT KILL IT
  • I don't remember the exact cards but there are several 3 card infinite combos w/ Breya
  • ...She has powers relating to artifact saccing. Of course there are infinite combos with Breya. There have to be infinite combos because it is the nature of Commander to ruin anything, no matter how pure
  • Do you ever look at a game that you love and think 'this would be so much better if it wasn't for other people'?

    image
  • image
    OH GOD WHAT IS THAT

AAAAAAAAH, KILL IT KILL IT KILL IT
To clarify what I meant, I played a loooot of games against Maelstrom Wanderer. Way too bloody many. If Breya was calling out for the Johnnies and Spike/Johnnys of Commander to emerge from their hacklofts and crawlspaces to ruin her with 3-card infinite combos, Ydris calls out for every Timmy and Timmy/Johnny to load it up with absurd levels of ramp, ovepowered expensive creatures AND infinite combos.

It's not as bad as Maelstrom Wanderer, in that it does need an external source of Fervor to be as terrifying in combat, sending it back to the commander zone will actually slow things down rather than giving them another chance to double-cascade, and the 4-different mana cost might slow down the ramp a bit. But the addition of black 'return creature from graveyard to your hand' cards might actually make things worse, and the fact that you have infinite cascades that you can control perfectly means you can pull off some dirty tricks with the CMC distribution of your deck. And of course, there's the fact that Maelstrom Wanderer is almost certainly somewhere in the 99

Point is, any game involving Ydris is going to devolve into "everybody gangs up on the one player with the broken commander and the latter still wins"
  • I think it looks fun >.>

also it's my favorite four colors! [shutup]
  • Of course they are. Nobody likes white because white's a jack of all trades that doesn't do any one thing well enough to stand on its own.

And of course it's fun. It's a Timmy card; those are fun by default. And if you build a deck with him, I trust you to make one that's both fun for you and fun for me. The problem is that it's very easy to make a deck that's fun for just you with a commander like that.

I'm not even going to claim I have the moral high ground here. I've played Riku and Kresh before, which are also 'make big things and smash people with them' commanders. And my all-time favorite is Vish Kal, and while my 'make tokens in order to turn Vish Kal into a 21/21 with lifelink' strategy isn't too degenerate, if I switched out maybe 6 cards from the deck, it'd be sufficiently cruel enough for me to regret playing with it.

    Nobody likes white

That's where you would be wrong
  • image Wee yea erra chs hymmnos mea.
    UB supremacy, etc etc.
  • White is fine it's just my least favorite color in terms of flavor.
  • I'm actually pretty fond of WB. Vish Kal up there likes to put that one 'this creature keeps coming back from the dead' white enchatment on a high-power creature and use that as fuel for Vish Kal. And two of my actual real-life decks are WB: An Exalted deck and a deck themed around the second Sorin.

It's just that White, quite fittingly, improves more when working with other colors than any other color. WB dominating the field with board wipes and targeted elimination. GW (eww) raising armies of elves (double eww). WU shutting down all opposition through stasis effects. RW...okay, nobody uses RW, but three out of four isn't bad.

I think I may only exist to provide counterpoint to your magic opinions, and that would honestly explain the quality of my life.

    Yidris deck:

    1. Every delve spell ever printed

    2. Every way to give him double strike you can get your mitts on

    3. a bunch of stuff that scries (also Scroll Rack)

    4. dumb valuetown payloads

    5. E X P R O P R I A T E
  • + the wheel effects already in the precon work nicely with the delve cards
  • that said my favorite new commander is probably Vial Smasher?

  • I am very excited about Vial Smasher. I haven't taken a good look at all of the partner commanders yet, but Vial Smasher is lit and combos pretty well with second Rakdos.

I only took a cursory look at all the Kaladesh legendaries. Not any of the Conspiracy ones.

And that is some serious card control from Leovold
  • he is almost certainly in the runnings for the least fun/most broken commander, and is definitely the top of the list if you wanna make people hate you on a budget
  • Alright, let's do this
    image
Okay, fine, I'll take back what I said about Boros. Combine this with Red's penchant for attack boosting or white's exalted mechanics, and you've got a terrifying hard hitter. And the best thing is that Bruse doesn't have to necessarily get himself involved in the actual fighting, if you can find a way to attack with him while making sure he won't get confronted. Lure ability, perhaps?

Pairs well with: Literally any Voltron commander ever.
    image
Not as mind-meltingly awesome as Mr. Shirtless up there, and Kor is the worst creature subtype, it being albino wood elves but not really, but artifact support in red is always a nice thing. Pairs up nicely with Kurkesh and Bosh. And if there's one thing that monowhite actually does do better than any other color, it's equipment and enchantments. She's a heavy hitter as a commander or one of the 99

Pairs nicely with: Boorish, of course. Silas Renn gets good synergy.

    image
Huh. A Sapling of Colfenor effect in the same colors? Didn't see that coming. Suitable for Doran-style Voltron or token damage. And this should be nice for fueling Black Necropotence and what have you.

Pairs well with: EFFING BOORISH. His ability combos with Ikra's, you get red 'two attack phases' to double your life-gain, and with white, you can play Doran and that one 2/10 treefolk card and just beat your opponents' faces in with lifelinking trees and walls and stuff.
    image
@Crystal. Anyways, this is a very interesting effect for Azorious, and yet it's typical for the color. Throw up a few 'it costs 2 to attack me per creature, so sucks for you' enchantments, pull out an armchair and a good book, and let everyone else play until you play a blue unblockable enchantment on your 21/21 Bird and kill someone in an instant.

Pairs well with: Boorish, again. Shortens the amount of time you need to wait until you can swing for lethal. Kraum also works pretty well.
    image
I still don't like the new colorless mana symbol. Back in my days, that would have been 'add X mana, where X is the number of cards you've drawn this turn', and we liked it that way, dammit. Still, temp ramp for card draw is interesting, considering it's usually the other way around. It's new but still very much Simic. And I'm 100% certain that someone's already found a way to break that ability into tiny, tiny shreds.

Combos with: Thrasios, Kraum and maybe Ludivec. A free mana boost while they do the interesting stuff
    image
...This is arguably the weirdest or second weirdest card in the entire set. For one thing, since when is Ludivec Izzet? Everything he's stitched together so far has been blue. For another, this is Izzet doing Edric-style mechanics instead of harnessing the power of the gods and using it to blast foes. It's very...calm and collected. It weirds me the f out. And what sort of red card discourages you from using other people's turns to throw fire magic? Best I can tell is that Ludivec is supposed to discourage attackers while you prepare whatever ludicrous storm combo you intend to win the game with. Which is, let's be fair, a fairly Izzet way to go about things, ignoring the shorthand consequences of their actions in the pursuit of the ultimate goal.

Pairs nicely with: Ravos, I guess. Ludivec wants to discourage attacks, and Ravos is really good at keeping blockers up. And if we're going outside of the partners, he also works well with the Meletis lovers as a counterpoint to their more savory diplomacy mechanics.

    image
God this card is boring. Not terrible, mind you. But boring. So boring that I'm not even going to try and say something interesting about it.

Pairs nicely with: Well, chucking your partner commander into the graveyard to ignore the re-activation cost is handy. Works well with any of the cheaper Voltron cards, like Akiri. Ikra will probably get the best use out of him, since he's useful when he has a lot of creatures out and that +1/+1 boost means a +1 to healing (and damage once you get Doran out, because you're smart)
    image
Pfft. She looks so miffed about being the last of the Abzan. Anyways, this card is absolutely ridiculous. Counters that never go away ever. Everyone, get your hydras and your vampires and get ready to effing party

Pairs well with: Tana works well. Counters means trample's more effective, which means her ability's more likely to work. And in retrospect, Ravos works well, here, since you can sac a hydra, move their tokens to something else, and then bring it back. Boorish works well too, naturally. As a side note, if you pair Reyhan with something white, you can play Vish Kal in the 99, and Vish Kal's ability is based on actual power, not base power, which means you can sac a hydra to power up Vish Kal, and then move all of the hydra's counters onto him to power him up again. So, I'm going to say this again. Boorish

    image
Hrm. Dull, but not Ravos dull. It's basically a better Emmara Tandris, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. I think he'd be better suited in the 99 of a better token commander, but you can do a lot of interesting things with him nonetheless. Heck, considering his ability and size, you could do a low-power Voltron thing, layering on a bunch of 'whenever this creature deals damage' enchantments.

Pairs nicely with: In general, as far as 2/X creatures go, BUR has ones with much more dangerous effects, so be sure to branch into a different color. Silas Renn and Tana are good and suitable, obviously. And if you mix it up with Ikra and Doran, you can get unblockable treefolk armies
  • Munch munch, chomp chomp...
    Sounds like a Good Bird.
  • Pt 2:

    image
There we go! This looks like a bleeding Izzet card! Hits hard enough, has evasion, and generates card draw while discouraging opponent shenanigans. Nothing too special, but it gets the job done.

Pairs well with: Boorish, of course. And Thrasios.

    image
...hmm. Sort of lacks the oomph of a good legendary effect, you know? That said, considering green and red can do damage boosting like no one's business, this is a fun way to see how many Saprolings you can create in one tun

Pairs nicely with: Ravos, especially since you're likely to get Tana killed and he'll be able to bring her back cheaply. Boorish, as usual. Ikra will be able to generate some good, but not great, life gain once Tana gets going.

    image
Infinite mana = Infinite draw. I haven't even looked and I already know that someone's broken this ability. Even if you're not playing him for combos, Sensei's Divining Top with extra draw is nothing to scoff at

Pairs nicely with: Kydele. Man, Thras doesn't need any hanger-ons. He can break the game by himself.

    image
Ah, Esper shard. Because who need internal organs when you've got Baroque metal bits keeping you together. Anyhow, I'm not actually too fond of his ability. I mean, it's not bad, but if I wanted to play games with artifact retrieval, I already have Glissa, who's better at combat and has a much more reliable ability. I suppose if you pair him up with a green commander, you can pull off some fancy BUG dredge mechanics.

Pairs nicely with: Akiri, Sidar, Ravos.

    image
I was in the middle of writing a much, much harsher review of this card, but I did some googling and I have forgiven it for some of its sins. It's okay. Phyrexian Arena is still a top pick in most black EDH decks, and in most cases, this is Phyrexian Arena tied to a tiny lifelink beatstick. That said, the fact that it's limited to combat damage limits its potential for fun times. And it encourages you to attack early and attack often, which can get you targeted. Still, it's definitely usable as a commander. Just not my thing in the least.

Pairs nicely with: Ludivec might keep you from getting killed by bribing your opponents with free cards. Sidar's second ability will allow Tymna to get fuel for the arena without getting herself killed

    image
This may just be the best Rakdos commander ever created. And definitely one of the best chaos commanders ever created. Encourages you to play big things and damn the consequences. Perfect Rakdos.

Pairs nicely with: Ravos gives you repeatable vial smashing fuel. With Ludivec, you can play a small spell each turn to generate diplomacy. And, since Vial Smasher deals the damage directly, you can Boorish that up for lifelink on all of your turns.
