    What is this about? This wiki is a catalog of abstract particulars and their representation in fiction.

    Tropes are instances of particular types of properties, of which all concrete objects are constituted. Because they are particular, not universal, tropes are, by definition, not the same as clichés. The word clichéd means "stereotyped and trite." In other words, dull and uninteresting. We are not looking for dull and interesting entries. We are here to list every single trope represented in fiction, not to make fun of them.

    The wiki is called "TV Tropes" because TV is where we started. Over the course of a few years, our scope has crept out to include other media. Tropes are not exclusive to television programs. They constitute concrete objects which are familiar to us in everyday life. Indeed, the ontological status of fictional objects is a matter of considerable controversy, so it's questionable whether TV shows, when taken as anything more than sequences of images and audio recordings, contain tropes at all. However, since many particular art-instances, especially instances of the popular arts, do their best to reflect the concrete world experienced in everyday life, tropes are likely to show up everywhere.
