There are 29 named characters in the first five pages of C.H. Brewitt-Taylor's translation of Romance of the Three Kingdoms.

Only five of them are important.  Four of these five are of volume-long importance.  Three of these four are of extreme importance.

Four more characters are introduced in the five pages after that.

Two of them are of extreme importance.

Yeah, of these thirty characters who have names in the first ten pages, five of them are extremely important, and four of these five are the main characters.

THIS IS WHY YOU MAKE CHARACTER LISTS WHEN YOU READ THE CLASSICS, PEOPLE.

It might not seem necessary now, but in fifty pages, you'll be wishing you had written these names and loyalties down.

I recommend notebooks with a page for each major faction.  Write in pencil, and be willing to add and erase things.

Except Lu BU is on everybody's side ans has to have a page of his own or you'll end up getting frustrated with having to move him from page to page.

LU BU:  Jerk Extraordinaire, unlikable since the Han Dynasty.

Oh, and those little carrots on top of the letter "e" in some names?  Remember to write those down, there will be characters with the same name except for marks like that.
