  • If your last Touhou/Pokemon is poisoned, and you're walking, and it
faints, not only do you white out and get sent back to the Touhou
Center, you "panic" and lose money.
That's generally the case in Pokemon games.
If you lose in battle. I've never actually had my last Pokemon/Touhou/whatever faint as I walk before.
  • And the Gensokyo report from Yarrun

    Medicine
is a doll youkai. She's the kind of youkai that gets abandoned for a century and gains sentience from loneliness (loosely). She gets the poison from the flowers near her home and she basically hates everyone.

    Sanae
, besides what Lapis Lazuli said, is the descendant of Suwako. She gets water and wind powers from Suwako and her other goddess, Kanako (respectively). Her official ability is miracles
  • Remember back in the 50s when they'd record like Elvis singing YOU AIN'T NOTHIN BUT A HOUND DOG and then they'd turn the record over and reverse it and it was all NYERP NYERP NYERP NYERP NYERP and people were all like, "That is actually the voice of Satan coming from that song."
    (idea bulb)

So Medicine is the Touhou equivalent of Banette? That's actually pretty cool. Partly because I like Banette, admittedly.
  • Splat Charger Specialist
    Medicine is underrated. CAPTCHA HER.
  • I think Medicine concentrates more on the poison attacks than Banette did, but I guess the idea is the same?
  • edited 2012-08-09 22:24:50

okay, here's the catch tally again.

    Chen: II
    Suwako: II
    Mystia: II
    Aya:
    Medicine Melancholy:  III
    Sanae:

and for Touhou we can't get yet:

    Hina: I

  • Splat Charger Specialist
@Gator: They're both based off of the same legend, but Medicine's poison thing kind of makes her a bit more unique.

I was thinking more in terms of idea, yeah. Banette isn't Poison-type at all, unlike the Gengar family.

Aw heck, I'll drop a vote for Medicine, too. Can't really think of a nickname for her, either. I want to say Banette, but that would be too easy.
  • Think I'mma wait til one of those four Touhoes gets a third vote. Can't be far off now.
  • I'll put in a vote for Medicine. She was always one of my favorite C-list characters (I mean, not as much as Hina)

And now, to finish my Gensokyo Report.

Suwako's is a water god, and one of the extra bosses in Touhou. She's one of the most powerful beings in Touhou, but she's retired from power struggles ever since that incident with Kanako (which we'll talk about more when we see Kanako). So, she just lounges about on her lake and causes mischief.
  • edited 2012-08-09 22:26:50

    We've got a winner folks.

I'll go out MM-catching later tonight. Think of a nickname in the meantime, folks, I want all of our Touhoes to have nicknames if Zesty has one.

  • Not a hybrid rabbit-skink spirit
Actually, if I'm not mistaken, in Gen IV your pokemon will stop being poisoned at exactly 1 HP! How very handy!

Name her Ray.  or some variation thereof.

I believe in the original English version of Sailor Moon, Sailor Mars was named Raye. You could try that if you wanted.
  • Splat Charger Specialist
She was Rei in the Japanese version, which makes this perfect actually. Call her Rei, that's my official vote.
  • Aaaaaaaaalright, I'll start playing in a moment so we can catch us a Melancholy Medicine.

Alright, so we head off to where we first found Medicine, and the first Touhou we run into is an Aya.

Not being interested in a tabloid subscription we promptly thrash her.

    and then a Sanae.

    and then a Chen.

    and then a Mystia

Of course because now that we want to find Medicine, we can't.

    image

    heyyy, there we go!

and we catch it, after taking an honestly pretty heavy beating.

    image

I love how her 'Dex entry totally glosses over her being genocidal.

    Rei the Medicine everybody.

Whelp let's take a look at her stats and whatnot.

    image

"Jolly Nature". Jolly because she can now kill without consequence. Also she's holding a Pecha berry. Sense of dramatic irony, I guess?

    image

she's literally so venomous that she can poison by contact. I am not even remotely surprised.

    image

kinda annoyed she only knows two moves though. Hopefully she'll learn some better ones as we go on.

I'm actually gonna stop this installment here and then go grind her up a little bit. I'll post again when she's at a bit higher a level.

    current party members:

Zestpoole the Sakuya: Perfect & Stab-Happy Maid

    Rei the Medicine: Semicompetent Genocidalist

  • actually I"m not going to be able to do even that, my emulator's fritzing out on me.

So I suppose I'll resume tomorrow.

  • Eh, I'd call Medicine more misanthropic than genocidal, but pinning down an accurate personality for a Touhou is like grabbing soap in the International House of Lard. That, and Touhouwiki is down and, therefore, I can't provide evidence for my interpretation

(IHOL does not actually exist. Besides this guy. What a waste of a name).
  • Maybe.

But nothing will ever convince me that Rei is not genocidal. Look at her.

  • Perhaps.

Any thoughts so far? I'll try to get at least one update in today, but I just got a copy of Civilization III gifted to me on Steam. So I may be busy for several hours.

It's always great when some veteran warriors you've kept since the very start of the game manage to fend off a tank.

"We've been using pointed sticks SINCE THE DAWN OF TIME and we're not about to stop now!"

"Oh yeah, we'll eat anti-personnel shells, cave peo...OH GOD! He threw the stick right through the gas tank! HE THREW A GODDAMN STICK RIGHT THREW THE GAS TANK! OH NO! NOT THE FLINT, STOP, STOP blehaAGHGHGHGHGH!"

"blehaAGHGHGHGHGH" is the exact sound you make when the tank you're in just caught fire.

Unfortunately, I've never been good enough at Civilization to get far enough in the game to see that.

I've voted for everyone I'd like that we can get so far. So unless someone else gets their third vote, I say we train Rei and try and get our revenge on Gary.

Though Rei might be at a disadvantage since she's Grass-type, and doesn't Gary still get a Flying-type at this point in Touhoumon?
  • edited 2012-08-10 19:48:06

I think Rei is pure poison, actually. No, I'm just a moron.

And yes he does. Chibi Aya.

Not sure how much I'll get done tonight tbh, I gotta watch my little brothers.

  • Also, ExReimu is Normal/Flying.
  • I know, but she's still Chibi right now.
  • No update today guys, sorry. I have a pounding headache and my emulator's lagging and I just don't feel like dealing with it right now.

I did grind Rei up a level though. Yay.

  • There's actually going to be an update today, woo!

Hopefully I'll get shit done. But first a snack, and then some grinding.

  • edited 2012-08-11 21:15:02

Short update for now, longer one later, most likely.

So while we were out grinding, I realized something.

I never got the town map from Gary's sister.

Yes, despite what he tells you, you can, in fact, get the map from her.

    image

    thank you, Daisy!*

    now for some more grinding.

    some tedious, tedious, tedious grinding.

Rei is in that magical zone of suckage where she's not strong enough to easily win fights with Touhou a good two or three levels below her, but she's too strong to get good EXP when she does.

    It's very, very annoying.

And after getting Rei KO'd by a fucking Mystia, we switch to Zesty and hey, this happens.

*GARY'S SISTER HAS A NAME, WTF?!?!?!?!

    image

cuz why the hell not. This'll help us at the first gym if nothing else. And let me just reiterate that we are not in any way taking the Pokemon Touhou League Challenge solely to spite Gary.

I make my best decision of the day and decide to say "fuck you" to grinding. We're doing this shit the hard way, ladies and gents....

Heh. Now she has two moves with an advantage over Brock.

And I can definitely understand your feelings about grinding Rei. Trying to grind with an Ekans before he learns Bite is quite a pain.

    so uh

    image

ah right, advancing. Progress. Good. Yes.

    also

    image

    fuck this tree.

so after checking the grass before that infamous forest passage to see if there was anything interesting (there wasn't), this happened:

    image

Rei is a spiteful bitch sometimes.

Now, let's enter the forest. Ah, but let's talk to these folks first. They may have something of note to say.

    image

    uh, OK.

    What about you, Miss Bowlcut?

    image

Right so...I guess the concept of greeting someone is foreign in Kanto. Well, whatever. I guess it's honestly kind of our fault for initiating conversation, but it just seems like everyone always has a piece of random useless advice to give y--actually now that I think about it that way this is the most realistic game I've ever seen.

    anyway

    image

IT'S MOTHER-FUCKING FOREST TIME BITCHES HELL YEAH

let's talk to this kid in the yellow hat (you'll find he has identical twins across Kanto).

    image

    oh joy.*

*let me know how you guys like this format of screenshot. I'm thinking it's better than cutting it across multiple pictures, personally.

As we walk around in the thick undergrowth, we encounter our first forest Touhou. I actually did have a screenshot of it, but accidentally saved over it. It's this, basically, though the sprite looks different in our version of the game:

    image

Yeah. These guys are all based off of various fairies from the games. The most famous Touhou fairy though (Cirno) is of course, not here. Because that would just be silly. In any case, these are actually not all bug type. Chibi Star Sapphire (what you see here) is actually Water, I think.

Chibi Star S. goes down without much of a fight. I'm going to remember that, because she makes pretty good grind fodder for Rei.

Oh hey, look! A Toho Orb, I wonder what Touhou is inside it and who it belongs to?image

aaaaaaaaaaaaaand, it was empty. Well whatever, free Toho Ball.

    image

Here's another forest fairy, all I know about this one is that it's Dark type, fairly certain. We take it down in two hits, the only move it used being Leer.image

and here's a Chibi Sunnymilk, I think these things are fire-type which puts us at a bit of a disadvantage here. We never do confirm my suspicions, since the thing's pretty much content to just throw sand at us until the sun goes supernova. But we take it down without actually taking any damage.

    image

and here's what I think is the last Touhou in this forest. It's Chibi Wriggle! I think Wriggle is actually a minor Youkai rather than a fairy, but who am I to judge? Unlike the others presented here, she is in fact, Bug type. Dualtype...fighting, I think? Too. Also! Note that this Wriggle is actually male. I think this is just because of a meme, where she's sometimes referred to as the only guy in Gensokyo, because she looks so boyish in some depictions. I know some other Touhou can turn up male, too. But it's uncommon.

We're actually gonna break it off here becauuuuse!image

Trainer over yonder! And I would like to make my first battle with a trainer who isn't Gary (fuck you, Gary) a separate post.

Not sure whether or not we'll get to that today.

Also! If you would like me to catch any of the Pokemon we've encountered here, just cast your vote and let me know.

According to the Touhoudex I'm using as a reference, Luna is Electric. Then again, this is for the original version of "Touhou Puppet Play," which seems to lack Namazu.

The Three Mischievous Fairies don't particularly interest me, but I'd be willing to drop a vote for Wriggle.

As for a nickname, I suggest Naoto. Because lol out-of-context Persona 4 reference
  • oh you're right, I think I'm mixing up Luna with Mystia. They look similar.

    'k'k one vote for Wrigglekick.

  • oh, IMPORTANT-ASS NOTE: I've played through it many a time, but I do not know FireRed's route like the back of my hand, and the routes in this game have been tampered with so that almost the entire game is unlocked from the start, so it's possible and if you're doing a speedrun--necessary, to sequence break. If I do that, please let me know, because it's an accident and I'm trying NOT to. Thank you.
  • alright, I ain't got nothin' better to do right now, so let's do this shit.

    image

come on indeed. I always found it weird that anyone with Pokemon was considered "fair game" in the games. I mean what if they're a breeder or a Pokemon Nurse or something? Oh well.

aaaaaand the very first thing he sends out is a Chibi Star Sapphire with the same level as Rei.

    image

    This can only end well.

We actually manage to take her out pretty easily (she only actually attacks once, the rest of her time is spent using Growl), which bumps Rei up to level 8.

    Speaking of Rei

    image

I feel her obsession with toxins may be approaching slightly unhealthy levels.

This ends up working in our favor though, cuz when he sends out his next Touhou, we can dust it up with Poisonpowder before bringing out the big guns.

    image

    pictured: "the big guns"

We manage to doublekick and knife his Luna into oblivion in short order, and I forgot to get a screenshot of it, but I was legitimately surprised when I noticed that his dialogue was edited slightly (in the original game he says "bugs can't hack it!" here, he says "fairies"). It's the little things that impress me, it really is.

So, we feed Rei a potion, since she kinda needs one, and head onward in search of more adventure.

    and hey, wot's this here?image

why it's another Fairycatcher. We could totally just be a pussy and avoid this guy, but fuck that, this is a world built around a vicious puppet-on-puppet bloodsport! LET'S DO THIS.

    image

    ...uh...

    yeah well.....YOUR MOM, bitch!

    sickburn!

anyway let's see what his first Touhou i....

    image

I get the feeling this is going to become some sort of running theme.

Shockingly, this Chibi Star actually attacks, but her attacks are pathetically weak. I'm not just saying that, her Pound does as much damage as an iteration of our poison effect does. And her Bubble attack....well, Rei's half-Grass. What do you think happens?

Now, this is the part where I kick myself. Cuz he sent out a Chibi Sunnymilk, and I by all rights should've switched because hey, Fire type. But no, I kept Rei out and she ended up getting KO'd from a single burst of Ember. We probably should've been a pussy.

So, we switch to the big guns yet again.image

pictured: the big guns, yet again

Now, while we were able to beat his Sunnymilk and the subsequent Luna, said Luna paralyzed Zesty (though as a note, Zesty leveled up again after KO'ing the Luna). So we've got to head on back to the Touhou center.

I'll resume this log once I do so.

  • so after getting refueled and buying a potion, we return to the forest where we meet this dude

    image

wasn't really planning to, but hey, good to have an excuse.

Dude leads with a Wriggle, so you know he means fuckin' business. Rei actually manages to KO both of his Touhou (the other was another Wriggle), gaining a level in the process.

So let's go on our way and....

    image

    huh....

    huh

soooo....I'm actually going to catch this and give it a nick. Because I've never seen a Chibi Marisa in the wild, and indeed, I had no idea they were even available in the wild. I'll let you guys vote on whether or not I should keep it and, when we get that far, whether or not to change its nickname at the Name Rater's. Also note that this Marisa is male, meaning I have *the perfect* nickname for it. So I think, anyway.

After about a quadrillion (real number, look it up) tries.image

    fuckyeah.

Now, I was going to name it Cho, after a meme that most of you would doubtless hate me for showing you, but the Tohodex entry

    image

makes me think of something else entirely.

    image

    MENTLEGEN.

I'm actually going to stop there. Cuz I want you guys to vote on whether or not I should keep Cheech and also whether or not that's a good name for him.

I may get another update in much later, but for now, Toonami's on in an hour, and I have a sacred duty to watch it.

  • TreTre

Hehe. You should name your next one Chong, just to make it match up.
  • :p

so am I keeping him or no?

  • Remember back in the 50s when they'd record like Elvis singing YOU AIN'T NOTHIN BUT A HOUND DOG and then they'd turn the record over and reverse it and it was all NYERP NYERP NYERP NYERP NYERP and people were all like, "That is actually the voice of Satan coming from that song."
I'd be fine with keeping him for now. He might not be on our active team later on, but one more teammate couldn't hurt.
  • Indeed.

I guess we'll keep him unless someone has serious objections.

  • >Docile
    >Marisa

And that was the first and last time that Marisa was called docile.

Anyways, I'm good with Cheech. Seems fitting for Marisa.

I'll also put in a vote for Wriggle. And I'm going to go with Malcolm if it's a guy and Serenity if it's a girl (obvious reference is obvious)
  • And now for the Gensokyo Report from Yarrun:

The Three Faeries are a group of characters from one of the supplemental mangas (there's like four or five of them if any of you lot are curious). They're basically a gang of miscreants who go around pulling pranks. Essentially, typical faeries. Sunny's the leader, Luna's the ditz and Star's the cunning one (technically). They're only appeared in one game, Fairy Wars, which is a gaiden game featuring Cirno. I'll touch more on that once we catch ourselves an ice fairy.

Wriggle's a low-level boss from the same game as Mystia. She's a firefly youkai, with the ability to control insects of any kind. Though she's generally considered a joke, she has the power to control deadly insects called demon mites (they make brown recluse spiders look like stuffed animals) in the supplemental guide to Gensokyo. Besides the 'Wriggle's a guy' meme (one that I'm not particularly fond of), she also has a meme called Wriggle Kick because of her tendency to surprise the player with her midboss attack. I wouldn't be surprised if she learns a kick move at some point.

As for Marisa...eh, long entry short, she's the secondary main character. Left her rich family in the village to study magic in the woods. A hard worker, but an insane kleptomaniac (expect her to learn Thief/Covet at some point). Generally less serious than Reimu when resolving incidents.

And that's all from the Gensokyo report.
  • That's two votes on Wrigglekick.

    Can ah getta third?

    LOL NO

I vote for Bruce Lee. Because I DUNNO TEH TOUHOES and it'd be a funny reference to her kicks.

Weird: I'm neither into Touhou nor Pokemon (yet, in Pokeymanz's case) but I still vote. I am an odd one.
  • No, I'm just asking if I could get a third on Wriggle in general. :p

since that's three votes, she's in. I'll hunt for her next time. And Bruce Lee as a nickname also has the most votes right now, so that's what we'll call him/her unless something else overtakes it.

Rei the Medicine: Increasingly Competent Genocidalist
Cheech the Marisa: Incredibly Feminine Acid Head
