    The cause of the first one is intentionally left to the reader's imagination.

    The third one happened after Calvin attempted to disassemble a leaking faucet. (He didn't know that you have to turn the water off underneath the sink first.)

    Modern living in the United States has not aesthetically changed appreciably much from these strips.  It's actually plausible to imagine someone today drawing these strips.
