"You can never make JRPG combat good, you can only make it tolerable, it's the diseased genre"

Much like your mom

  • Is this an actual quote or just paraphrasing a bunch of things?

    It's mostly an actual quote

Frankly speaking such a quote says more about the person saying it than the genre itself.

There are ways to make turn-based combat very interesting, and in fact there's an entire subgenre dedicated to that (specifically the turn-based strategy RPG, e.g. Final Fantasy Tactics, Fire Emblem, etc.).

Furthermore, since the quote just says "JRPG combat", and not specifically turn-based combat, there's a bunch of JRPGs with real-time combat, including the Tales series and Ys series, and people generally speak quite positively of this too.

Rather, the quote suggests that the person saying this is two things:
    1. They think that the entire point of JRPGs is the combat.
    2. They think that all JRPGs have boring turn-based combat.

Basically that means either or both of the following are true:
    * They want something that's combat-intensive.
    * They know very little about JRPGs.
  • I feel like, while I certainly disagree with people who say things like this, it's also the sort of thing where any discussion with them is 90% semantics/moving-the-goalposts wrt what a JRPG is,

and also they're probably the kind of people who said Dark Souls is a western RPG.

To be fair, it has (as far as I know) elements that are more commonly associated with WRPGs, such as character build options, free-roaming game world, complex real-time action gameplay, lack of music in many areas, and a generally dark/dour visual aesthetic.

In the course of my career as a vidcon specialist (my own coinage, spend it wisely), I have never seen such blatant and frankly, sickening ignorance as that exhibited by the "people" (if, in fact, they are homo sapiens at all, as their intelligence implies elsewise) that claim that Zelda is not an RPG. There is nothing that Shigeru "Shiggy" Miyamoto could possibly do to make the vidcon any more of an RPG as it meets every single criterion for being one, particularly that it takes place in an imaginary realm with a fantastical beastiary, the damsel/villain ratio is at or above standards, and that the core emphasis of the gameplay is on bedazzling all foes with impeccable swords and sorcery. Furthermore, this line of thought can be extended to all vidcons in which the player controls a character (hence, roleplaying), though I cringe slightly at the thought of such mundane vidcons as Madden being RPGs, as they do not even include exotic weaponry such as the tonfa.
  • The Zelda series is basically the Metroid formula but in top-down perspective.

    Munch munch, chomp chomp...
How do I recognize this ridiculous quote.

Oh, right, I read that one LP. "Nice."

  • @title

This was one of those base assumptions that Extra Credits seemed to have and it always bugged the piss out of me

i don't remember them saying anything like that, but if so that's dumb
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”

...I confess that I will never not associate this Pokémon from a cute smutty anthro drawing of it a certain artist did.

    ah . . . i see what you mean

actually idk if i said this before (probably), but a lot of my favourite combat mechanics are JRPG-style with action elements, e.g. Paper Mario TTYD, Mario & Luigi, Undertale
  • My dreams exceed my real life
The person who said this said that Undertale's combat was "odious"
  • their mom is odious
  • kill living beings
    that would be "odorous"

    What a boring person.
  • I'm glad that that Extra Credits video seems exactly as bad and wrong now as it did five years ago.
  • My dreams exceed my real life
I still don't know why they do history videos
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
I honestly like those better than their game design ones, but it is peculiar.
  • I remember feeling at the time that:
    * before I watched those videos, I liked JRPGs and I also had a positive opinion of Extra Credits
    * before I watched those videos, I also felt that JRPGs were being somewhat unfairly maligned, but I didn't have a good response to offer to this supposed maligning
    * after I watched those videos, I felt that Extra Credits was a bit biased against JRPGs, though they had some interesting things to say.

Basically, they seemed to be more about "this is why fans of WRPGs don't like JRPGs", than "this is what's wrong with JRPGs".

Incidentally, after those videos were made, we've seen a huge revival of the JRPG genre on PC.  Turns out it wasn't dead after all.

James Portnow has a degree in the classics, IIRC.

Also I don't think the video is completely or even mostly wrong, it's just got some faulty assumptions in it.

the history videos are entertaining, but they do repeat a lot of factual inaccuracies and stuff that straight up isn't true, even if you don't count the parts they acknowledge in the 'lies' videos
  • THIS MACHINE KILLS FASCISTS
I remember binge-watching a bunch of Extra Credits a long time ago, since someone pointed them out to me, but there are a lot of them and they started to bore me to tears after a while.

also I have to wonder if whoever said that about JRPGs 1) hadn't played one in years 2) the one they did play was one of the FF ripoffs that came to the PS1 after FFVII hit it big (or alternatively one of the lesser ones on the SNES).
