how do I use this fucking program I just want to play Raiden

so you got a ZIP of Raiden from somewhere, I assume

in yer MAME folder there should be another folder called "roms"

put the Raiden zip in there and you should be able to play it from MAME's main menu

I've seen that occasionally and, AFAIK, there's no way around it unless you can find the missing ROM or CHD images. Which....good luck with that.

I think I'll go see if I can find a DL of Raiden that works

well it's not just Raiden, you'll note I also have Raiden II and the much later III downloaded as well, and both cough up the same error. So I think I'm doing something wrong

my Firefox is configured to automatically unzip zipped files, which is not what you do with ROMs.

the good news is that it turns on now

not sure how to make it recognize my keyboard as an input device though (or my PS4 controller for that matter)

You actually should be able to unzip the roms if you want.

It also should have keys bound by default though so idk.

there's an internal menu in MAME that lets you change keys, I think.

You can hit Tab while a game is running to get to the menu.

Yeah, DOS games have Ctrl+Alt+arrow keys as a common control scheme.

My main annoyance with Raiden, if I recall correctly, is that it forced me to mash the fire button to fire the yellow shots.

Also I suck at using the green "swaying" laser.

yeah the game predates the prevelance of auto-fire in video games I think.

Raiden III -- or at least its PC version -- does have auto-fire.

Also, if you're ever looking to buy Raiden, do note that Raiden Legacy's implementation sucks, but Raiden III's implementation is much better.

Raiden III also came out years later and is developed by a different studio though, so it makes sense that it'd have it.

Also I cannot see myself ever purchasing a shmup. Maybe one of the Touhou games.

I have turbo on my controller, so I use that to compensate for lack of auto-fire.

Radiant Silvergun is a Saturn game isn't it?  might be more demanding.  Not sure.

it's an arcade game that was ported to the Dreamcast.

(and to the Xbox 360 years later)

It is always possible that there's just slowdown on the actual arcade machine also (in which case it wouldn't really be a problem if there is in MAME I guess), though idk if that's the issue in this case.

the ROM is marked as "imperfect" so it might not be anything I can do anything about

now, on a non-shmuppy note, I'm gonna try Hydro Thunder (my bet is that this will not work, or at least won't work very well, but I guess we'll see).

slowdown in arcade games is rare but possible.

Metal Slug 2 suffered enough from it that they remade it.

i dumped shitloads of quarters into that sucker. trying futilely to unlock the super boats and fine the hidden routes

I was never very good at it. My stepdad unlocked the UFOat for me at one point though

it's a UFO Boat!

it was called the Rad Hazard, because the game came out in the 90s.

The boats were put into one of three difficulties based on how hard they were to use, and picking one of the "Hard" boats (of which the Rad Hazard was one) would make the announcer yell "YOU'RE CRAZY!!!"

it was a very silly game.

besides the weird idea of being good at this game, notable: there's an area 51 level

that's from Hydro Thunder Hurricane, which came out in 2010 for the 360.

I thought it was pretty good but most people I've talked to seem to not like it since it's a sequel rather than a remake or port.
