i never listened to them much but i always appreciated their flare for the dramatic and willingness to write overambitious songs in a genre where lack of ambition is more often the norm
well in a deathcore band you play some brutal death riffs then you say fuck and do a really chuggy breakdown, whereas if you're in a metalcore band you play some at the gates riffs then you play the breakdown from Flesh and the Power it Holds
Most people when they talk about mathcore are referring to The Dillinger Escape Plan, Botch, Coalesce, Converge's mid-period material, that sort of thing, which took the post-hardcore tradition of no-frills progressive music which spawned math-rock and welded it to a metal framework.
Early deathcore has a fair amount of overlap with mathcore, particular Ion Dissonance's stuff.
