    Like quite a lot of things referred to as "dark and gritty" are somewhat dark, but very slick, rather than gritty

    A lot of people do seem to conflate anything even remotely dark with the worst edgelordery.

    Well, first of all, "dark" could refer to content or aesthetics, and "grittiness" usually refers specifically to a certain variety of cynicism with a bit of a fatalistic attitude toward things, as well as an aesthetic that empasizes the broken-down and ruined.
